By now you probably know AI generative text tools like ChatGPT can create almost any kind of text – from research papers to blog articles to sales letters to poems.
But did you know there are AI tools that can write original music? Not just the lyrics but the music as well?
My son recently sent me a clip of a country song he had generated using suno.ai
I was really impressed!
Experimenting with Suno.ai AI Song Writing
I’ve dabbled in song writing off and on since high school. My curiosity was piqued, so I immediately jumped in and tried it. All you have to do is type in the style of music and the theme of the song you’d like it to create, and – BAM! – in less than a minute it generates two original songs.
Here are some instant classics I created with Suno.ai (click the title to listen):
- Otter Mania – A glam metal song about a family of otters with a rockin’ guitar solo
- Ghostin’ Chad – A Taylor Swift inspired pop country song by a girl who was ghosted by her boyfriend named Chad
The songs may not be lyrically deep, but they are catchy. Don’t you think? Some might say they are better than what you hear on the radio today, or at least on par with what you’d hear in a Phineas and Ferb episode. 😀
The free version of suno.ai generates two original songs for each prompt which are limited to 40-60 seconds with one verse and a chorus.
Can Suno.ai Write Easter Worship Songs?
From there I was curious to see if Suno could write Christian worship songs that were decent musically and accurate theologically.
I tried the prompt “uplifting Christian worship music about Easter”
Resurrection Song – “powerful gospel soulful” (as described by Suno)
[Verse]
In the darkness, a light is shining
Hope is rising, fear is subsiding (hallelujah)
From the grave, love has emerged
The Savior’s victory, forever heard
[Chorus]
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Sing it loud, let the whole world know
Jesus rose, the tomb is empty
Hallelujah, His love is our hope
I’m not sure I would say “love has emerged” from the grave or “His love is our hope” when it’s Jesus himself who is our hope. but its not bad lyrically. Musically, the song definitely has a soulful, gospel sound to it. Click to listen to Resurrection Song.
Here’s the 2nd song generated from that prompt…
Resurrection Day – “gospel uplifting celebratory” (as described by Suno)
[Verse]
Oh, the morning sun rises so bright and clear
Awakening the world, casting away our fear
A new day dawns, a symphony of praise
For Christ is risen, triumphant in His ways
[Chorus]
Hallelujah, let the church bells ring (alleluia!)
In joyful worship, let our voices sing (oh-oh-oh)
On this Resurrection Day, we celebrate
The victory of love, overcoming hate (oh-yeah-yeah)
The lyrics are OK, but there’s not a lot of depth or creativity to them. And while description says it’s “gospel,” it sounds more country to me. Click to listen to Resurrection Day.
Can Suno.ai Write Easter Hymns?
What about people in traditional churches who prefer classic hymns? Can Suno write Easter Hymns that will resonate with them?
I tried the prompt “Christian hymn about Easter with pipe organ and old English lyrics”
Resurrection’s Dawn – “hymn spiritual classical” (as described by Suno)
[Verse]
Upon this sacred morn, when darkness is withdrawn
In glorious splendor, Resurrection’s dawn
The stone it did give way, as angels did proclaim
The victory of love, forever to remain
[Chorus]
Rejoice, rejoice, the Lord is risen today
Hallelujah, hallelujah, let the heavens sing
Rejoice, rejoice, let all creation join the praise
For our Savior lives and grace eternal brings
The lyrics aren’t bad but they definitely aren’t “old English” like I requested in the prompt. Musically, there’s no pipe organ, and it sounds more like its from the 60s or 70s than a classic hymn. Click to listen to Resurrection’s Dawn.
So, I tried to see if I could get better results with the prompt “Christian hymn about Easter, 1800s, old English, organ accompaniment, 4 part harmony”
Nope. The results weren’t any better. The current free version (v2), just doesn’t do organs or 4 part harmony.
Can Suno.ai Write Creative Easter Music?
Last, I wanted to play around and see if Suno could do something fun and creative.
I gave it the prompt “reggae style Christian lyrics about Easter, Jesus resurrection providing forgiveness and new life in Christ”
Resurrection Vibration – “spiritual reggae uplifting” (as described by Suno)
[Verse]
Every day is a new beginning
Jesus rise up, conquer death’s stingin’
His love so strong, it keeps me smilin’ (smilin’)
In His light, all my sins I’m reconcilin’ (reconcilin’)
[Chorus]
Resurrection vibration, fillin’ up my soul (oh-oh)
Jesus bringin’ forgiveness, makin’ me whole (yeah, yeah, yeah)
New life in Christ, like a river flow (flow)
Oh-oh-oh-oh, resurrection vibration, let it show
If you want to take issue with the term “Resurrection Vibration” you can, but Suno is spot on with the raggae vibe! Click to hear Resurrection Vibration for yourself.
New, Improve Features in Suno v3
The current version of Suno (v2) has its limitations. However, Feb 22, 2024, Suno announced v3 alpha, is now available to paid users. It includes:
- Increased max clip length of two minutes
- Dedicated instrumental support
- Expanded language coverage
The instrumental feature is useful if you’re looking for background music to add to a video or intro/bumper music for radio or podcasting. No more need to pay for tracts or search for free/royalty-free tracts.
Is Suno.ai Going to Take Over Worship Music?
After experimenting with Suno.ai, I can’t help but be impressed!
However, I would say Suno is to song writing what ChatGPT is to to writing text. It’s great for ideas, but it generates mediocre content full of cliche’s. And it lacks creativity and personality.
I use ChatGPT sometimes to help write articles, but then I edit them to correct mistakes, add my own anecdotes and tweak to my personality.
I could see Suno being used in the same way in the song writing process.
