Websites are a great way to get the word out about your church, school or business.  However, if your website isn’t drawing as much traffic as you would like, you may want to consider search engine optimization (SEO) services.

What is SEO?

SEO is a way of helping the search engines find your site and telling them what keywords to rank your site for.  It also helps you build authority with search engines so your rankings with them will improve over time.

There are a few quick things you could do right now to optimize your site.  Kurt Steinbrueck, Director of Marketing Services with, has created this video to give you a few free tips to help you optimize your website for the search engines.

5 Tips for How to Optimize your Website for the Search Engines

If you have the NE1 web builder, created by, you will want to start on the admin page and then click to edit your page.  If you are working with another web builder or in HTML, just go to where you can edit the pages of your site.

1. Determine Your Keywords:

You need to know the keywords you want to rank for with your web pages.  The best way to determine your keywords is through keyword research.  If you don’t want to do keyword research or can’t find the time, then just brainstorm what keywords you think it would be good to rank for.  It’s a good way to determine your keywords, but it’s better than nothing.

2. Optimize Your Page’s Name:

You can enter your keyword as your page name, or if your keywords are too long, you can just use part of the keywords for your page name.

3. Title Your Page and Add Headings:

Next you can enter the keywords at the top of your content box, highlight the text, and then select Heading 1 from the format drop down menu. This sets up what is known as a h1 tag in HTML, which sends a very strong signal to the search engines.  You can only use the Heading 1 once.  If you have other keywords, you can add them with the Heading 2 or 3.  It’s not as strong as the Heading 1, but still sends a signal to the search engines.

4. Use Keyword in Your Text:

You can also work your keywords into your text.  You want to try and do this naturally, so that the reader won’t even notice.  Try to work the keywords in about two or three times.

5. Optimize Your Images:

Another quick thing you can do is optimize your images.  If you have an image on your page, you can click to edit your image and then you will see you can give your image a title and description.  If you image is related to your keyword, you can enter your keyword there.

Now you can save your changes and you have optimized your website for search engines!
