Where Am I Ranking in Google?
More and more people are understanding the enormous value of SEO (Search Engine Optimization). They use some keywords on their website and try to get some links and then…well…many people get stuck there. They just kind of hope for the best and assume they will rank better either because it’s too difficult and time consuming to check their rankings or they just don’t know how to do it.
So, how do you find our where you are ranking in Google? How do you do it in a way that doesn’t take forever? How do you know that you are getting accurate results?

Hi, I’m Kurt Steinbrueck with OurChurch.com. In this video, we’re going to talk about how you can find out where you’re ranking. If you’re trying to build up your rankings, you’re trying to do some SEO, search engine optimization, and you’re trying to get more visitors to your site through the search engines, you really need to know where you’re ranking and what keywords you’re ranking for and all that kind of stuff. So how do you figure that out? How do you figure out where you’re ranking?
There are a couple of ways to check your rankings.
1. Checking Manually:
You could go and do searches yourself and try to manually look at it. There are a Couple of problems with this, though: first is that it takes a lot of time. If you have 100 keywords and you’re trying to look at Google and Bing and Yahoo!, that’s looking up 300 keywords and then going however many pages into it. That could take a very long time.
The problem with the manual check:
The other problem with it is with personalization, you may not be seeing the same thing that other people do. You frequently visit your own site; the search engines are able to track those types of things, and so they consider that site really relevant to you, and they’ll actually boost your site in your own search results, where they may not be doing that for other people. So, that personalization is going to skew your results, and you’re going to seem to be doing better than you really are.
Now, you could try to avoid the personalization; there are settings where you can say don’t personalize and you can clear your browser history, you can sign out of your browser and the search engine and all those types of things. But with the personalization, there is still sometimes kind of a residual effect. You can’t always be sure that you’re totally clean. So it’s hard to really trust a manual search like that.
Using Ranking Reporting Software:
The other option is to actually have software that does it. There’s a lot of options out there; there’s things like Advanced Web Ranking, Internet Business Promoter; I think Moz.com has a ranking service. There are a lot of different tools out there. Really, all you have to do is search for “find search rankings” or “search ranking reports” or something like that, and you’ll be able to find a lot of different tools that are available, where all you do is you enter your keywords in, you tell them what website you have, and then they’ll go out and they’ll search the search engines for you and return what the results are.
The Benefits of Using Software:
The great benefit of that is the time. You’re just entering a few things in and it’s doing it for you. And they’re able to usually do it pretty clean, where you’re getting results that are pretty much the baseline.
There Really is No “This is my Ranking.”
Now, of course, other people are searching; they’re going to see personalized results, so there’s really no such thing as “this is my ranking” for everyone. But you can get a baseline concept of where you are, and then that usually is going to be pretty close to what people are seeing.
So, that’s how you can determine where you’re ranking, and keeping track of that will allow you to know what keywords to target and be able to bring in more and more people through SEO.
