Meta Tagging Your Site

Summary of “Meta Tagging Your Site”

Meta tags are tags that you can put on your website which can help you to rank better in the search engines.  There are actually several kinds of Meta tags, but the most commonly used tags are the Title, Description, and Keywords tags and that is what we focus on in the above video.

Meta Tagging Your Site:
The three Meta tags all go in the head of your web pages.  The head is the part of the code for the page which is not visible to visitors and is located between the <head> and </head> tags.  You can put the Meta tags anywhere in the head or, if you are using the NE1 Web builder, you just enter the tags into the appropriate field, as demonstrated in the video, and NE1 will create the tags for you, putting them right where they need to be.

Title Tag:
The title tag is the most important Meta tag for the page.  It helps you to rank better for the words you put in it and it may be displayed as the text for your search result.  Just go to the “SEO Features” of your page and type in the text you want for your title tag in the “Meta Title” field or, if you aren’t using NE1, add <Title>enter your text here</Title> into the head of the page.

Meta Description:
The Meta Description tag is also important for the search engines.  It can influence search rankings a little (not as much as the Title tag) and the search engines may also use this text in your search results.  Just go to the “SEO Features” of your page and type in the text you want for your description tag in the “Meta Description” field or, if you aren’t using NE1, add <meta name=”description” content=”enter your text here”> into the head of the page.

Meta Keywords:
The Meta Keywords tag is the least important of the three Meta tags.  It’s not really used much by the search engines, but it can help a little (very little).  Just go to the “SEO Features” of your page and type in a few keywords (around 5 or so) in the “Meta Keywords” field or, if you aren’t using NE1, add <meta name=”keywords” content=”enter your keywords here”> into the head of the page.

That is how you add Meta tags to your website.  It’s a good idea to use unique entries for each page when you are Meta tagging your site and the NE1 Web Builder makes that simple.
