Last week I wrote about what a usability test is and why it is a great tool anyone and everyone should use. Usability tests can be real eye-openers, revealing things about your website that you never realized. These revelations can be the difference between having a successful website and an unsuccessful site or the difference between having a good site and a great site. It may even be the difference between whether your online company thrives or fails. Today, I’m going to write about how any company or organization can perform usability tests quickly, cheaply, and effectively.

I wish I could say “why aren’t you doing usability tests? Everyone else is.” But it’s simply not true. Most companies and organizations don’t do usability testing and they are missing out on a great opportunity. Church staffers and other non-business people you need to read this too. While businesses can certainly benefit from usability testing, so can churches…and anyone else with a website for that matter. Now it’s possible for teachers to quickly, easily, and securely communicate directly with parents through their school website. teachers can easily create and update a private web page for each student. Each page is password protected so that only that student’s teacher(s) can edit it and only that student’s parents can view it. Check out this demo video.
Monday night after months of development, testing, and feedback, we launched a major redesign of our website at OurChurch.Com. The design work is not done – we’re still redesigning the content of several sections of the website, but it’s a big milestone.
Of course, all that doesn’t mean our design is perfect or anything like that. In fact, integrating the new design into Wordpress has been problematic and there are several design/formatting problems here. I think it’s a big step in the right direction, but we are still learning and improving all the time.
So, I thought you might like to hear about some of the changes we made and more importantly why we made them, because it might change the way you think about the design of your own site.
