I realized last night that I made a big blogging blunder.
When we wrapped up the 31 Days to Build a Better Blog project in mid June, I told everyone that in an effort to continue the community and momentum we built during the project that I would do a post on Christian Web Trends about blogging every Wednesday morning.
Thanks to a combination of Monday’s holiday and my terrible long-term memory (yes I consider 1 month to be long-term), I forgot. That lack of consistency is going to hinder some of the community and momentum we created.
I recently came across a post Michael Hyatt wrote titled “Do You Make These 10 Mistakes When You Blog?” which lists more momentum-killing mistakes to avoid.
Some of the big ones that jumped out at me are:
- Mistake #1: You don’t post enough.
- Mistake #4: You don’t invite engagement.
- Mistake #5: You don’t participate in the conversation.
- Mistake #7: You don’t create catchy headlines.
- Mistake #8: Your first paragraph is weak.
I highly recommend reading the full article.
Have you made any of these mistakes? Do get frustrated by other bloggers who make some of these mistakes? Do you have any other momentum-killing blogging mistakes you want to caution other bloggers to avoid?

Helpful ideas, and thanks for a good resource with the full article. I am pretty sure that one blog post every six months isn't winning me any fans.
I struggle with nearly all of those things, but especially the frequency with which I post. I tend to blog in spurts, when I'm feeling inspired, but without much regularity. Thanks for reminding/challenging us to be better bloggers!
Great tips. These have been my problem as well in the past. I also recommend people to review their style in blogging because you may not know you are dong it wrong.
Thanks for sharing.
interesting,
I am sure my mistakes have to be:
# Mistake #7: You don’t create catchy headlines.
# Mistake #8: Your first paragraph is weak
because I try to do everything else
Good post. Besides numbers 1 (I tend to post about once a week) 7 and 8 being troublsome for me, number 3 seems to be a problem, my post tend to be 1000-1200 words frequently. I guess if I wrote shorter post, I could post more frequently. I really don't get enough interaction on my blog too. I guess I need a lot of help 🙂 I guess I need to participate next time in the 31 days…
Each of these can be a problem, and because I treat blogging as a speedier task than writing for publication, I suppose I really need to review my first paragraphs.
As to #1 I used to blog daily! Then I wondered if daily challenges to think deeply might actually be a turn of and cause people to get a habit of skipping blog post notices. So I moved to one post per week with occasional special post thrown in.
Of course, I discovered in 31 DBBB that lack of clicks has more to do with a host of other problems and resources I did not know about. So, blogging now takes me more time and posting once per week on the same day each week has become about all my lifestyle can handle.
It's always great when someone checks out my posts and let's me know what I am doing well or where I can improve. Look at this week's post at the website given here.
