All Things Obey God "He said to the snow, Be thou on the earth."-(Job 37:6) God's works are very great, but still His hands do not appear: Though heaven and earth obey His will, His voice we cannot hear. And yet we know that it is He Who moves and governs all, Who stills the raging of the sea, And makes the showers fall. Alike in mercy He bestows The sunshine and the rain; That which is best for us He knows, And we must not complain. Whether He makes His winds to blow, And gives His tempests birth, Or sends His frost, or bids the snow, "Be thou upon the earth." Author Unknown __________________________________________________ April Showers "You water the ridges abundantly: You settle the furrows: You make it soft with showers: You bless the springing up."-(Psalm 65:10) When April skies begin to frown, And the cold rain comes pelting down, We must not grumble nor complain, Nor idly say, we hate the rain. God sends the rain; the dusty ground It softens in the fields around; The moisture every plant receives, And springs afresh in flowers and leaves. Should God forbid the showers to fall, Nor send us any rain at all, The ground would all grow hard and dry, And every living plant would die. All things would starve and perish then— No food for birds, nor beasts, nor men; Then do not murmur, nor complain, God, in His goodness, sends the rain. Author Unknown __________________________________________________ Ploughing The little birds by God are fed But man must earn his daily bread, And work that he may eat; Striving his best, as John does now, The broad ten-acre field to plough, Wherein to sow the wheat. Old John, the ploughman, ne'er repines, Whether it blows, or rains, or shines, But happy still does seem; And Dick, who leads the foremost horse, Goes whistling as he walks across The field beside the team. Let us perform as gladly, too, The work our Master bids us do, And then we need not fear; But when from earthly toil we rest, We all shall meet among the blest Who served Him truly here. Author Unknown __________________________________________________ Summer Flowers "The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose." -(Isaiah 35:1) Behold the flowers of June! how fair And bright their buds appear, As, opening to the summer air, Our eyes and hearts they cheer! Who would have thought there could abound Such beauty and delight Beneath the cold and wintry ground That hid those flowers from sight? That power which made and governs all— The mighty power of God— Alone could life and beauty call Out of the lifeless sod. And He, who from the Winter's gloom Can Summer thus disclose, Shall one day make the desert bloom, And blossom as the rose. Author Unknown __________________________________________________ The Flowers Appear on the Earth "The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land" -(Song of Solomon 2:12) Now the winter cold is past, And blithe March winds are blowing, In sheltered nooks we find at last Bright flowers of spring are growing. Along the hedgerow's mossy bank, Where ivy green is creeping, We see through weeds and nettles rank The dark-blue violet peeping. And in the sunny gar-den beds Gay aconites are showing, And snowdrops bend their graceful heads, And crocuses are glowing. God makes the buds and leaves unfold, All flowers are of His giving; He guards them through the winter's cold, He cares for all things living. Author Unknown __________________________________________________ The Providence of God Yea, the Lord shall give that which is good; and our land shall yield her increase." -(Psalm 85:12) The seed was sown long months ago, And, through the winter's cold and snow, We trusted that God's care would bring The green and tender blade in spring, Which cherished by the sun and rain Of summer, now has yielded grain In autumn, when the reaper leaves His cot to cut and bind the sheaves, And load with them the nodding wain Which bears them homeward from the plain. So God's great mercies thus abound; His love still brings the seasons round; His blessings fill our happy fields, And all our land its increase yields: So if we serve Him as we should, Our Lord will give us all things good; And He who doth the ravens feed Much more will give us all we need! Author Unknown __________________________________________________ The Wise Men of the East The Eastern sages watched the sky, They looked from night till morn, There shone a bright, new star on high, They knew that Christ was born. Then up they rose, and came from far, They journeyed night and day, Led by the shining of that star, And found Him where He lay. There is not any need for us To leave our homes behind, Through distant lands to travel thus The Son of God to find. For home to us each Christmas Day The newborn Saviour brings; Then shall we not our homage pay Like those good Eastern kings? Author Unknown __________________________________________________ Trust in God "He causes the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; He makes lightnings for the rain; He brings the wind out of His treasuries." -(Psalm 135:7) Our God who reignest up on high, Though lightnings flash across the sky, And howling tempests hurry by, We fear not these, for Thou art nigh To all who trust in Thee. Though now the sky is overcast, And heavy rains are falling fast, And storm and sleet go driving past, And day by day the moaning blast Sweeps dead leaves from the tree, November time, that seems so drear, When days are dark and winter near, Will pass at length, and Christmas cheer The last hours of the dying year With song and dance and mirth. And in due time Thy mighty power Will give the spring, with sun and shower, The opening leaf, the early flower, And birds in every woodland bower Will sing to gladden earth. Author Unknown __________________________________________________ Universal Praise See how nature now rejoices In this sunny month of May; Still to God from all its voices Giving praises day by day. In the glad green woodland alleys Every bird its anthem trills! While flocks feeding in the valleys, Herds upon a thousand hills, Join with every creature living, Here on land, in air, or sea, In one great worldwide thanksgiving, Yielding praise, O God, to Thee! All around us swells the chorus From this goodly world of ours, And earth's altar stands before us Sweet with incense from her flowers. So, with Nature still confessing His great goodness, let us pay Grateful homage for each blessing Of this sunny month of May. Author Unknown __________________________________________________ Your Heavenly Father Feedeth Them "See the fowls of the air: they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than them? -(Matt. 6:26) God loves His little birds; for all His tender care He shows; A single sparrow cannot fall But its Creator knows. They do not sow, nor reap the corn, Garner nor barn have they; God gives them breakfast every morn, And feeds them through the day. And this we know; for in His Word, Where all His ways we read, We find that every little bird He cares for, and will feed. God loves each little bird; but still More tender is His care For children who obey His will, Than for the fowls of air.
