Berry Smith Jr., better known as Junior to family and close friends, 77, of Grayson, KY and 609 Highway 466, Lady Lake, FL, and formerly of Westwood, KY, died Tuesday evening, May 12, 2009 at the Hospice Care Center in Ashland, following a long illness.
Mr. Smith as born March 21, 1932, in Ashland, Kentucky and reared in Westwood, a son of the late Berry Smith Sr. and Mattie Mae Williams Smith. He was a retired foreman in the Coating Department of Armco (AK) Steel Corporation, Ashland, KY.
In addition to his father and mother he was preceded in death by eleven brothers and sisters, including George Ray Smith, Arthur “Charlie” Smith, Willie Mitchell Smith, Hattie Mae Adams, and Myrtle Marie Wright.
Surviving is his lovely life, Viola Dyer Smith, four sons, Berry Lee (Liz) Smith of Prosperity, SC, David Keith Smith of Salt Lake City, UT, Curtis Brian (Kim) Smith of West Point Utah, and Jeffrey Dean (Beth) Smith of Nicholasville, KY; three daughters, Evelyn Marie Fannin of Nicholasville, KY, Cheryl Ann (Tony) Jackson of Lexington, KY, and Sandra Kay (Johnny) Terry of Ashland, KY; a stepdaughter, Karen Jo (Tom) Wheeler of Catlettsburg, KY and stepson James Keith Stewart of Catlettsburg, KY both of whom he raised, one brother, Paul Edward “Abe” (Virginia) Smith of Mandarin, FL; one sister, Polly Ann Tunnicliff, of Wilmington, NC; seventeen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, one step-great-grandchild, three additional stepdaughters, Deborah (Jim) Everman of Grayson, KY, Donna (Tim) Chamberlin of Wheelersburg, OH, and Rachael (Paul) Whitmarsh of Portland, ME; two additional stepsons, Donald (Kelly) Cooke of Grayson, KY, and Zachary (Vicki) Henderson of Wheelersburg, OH, and seven additional step-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted 11:00 AM Saturday May 16, 2009 at the First Baptist Church of Grayson 162 N. Court Street, by Brother Paul Cox, burial will follow in the Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.
Friends may call 6-9 PM Friday May 15, 2009 and after 10 AM on Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Grayson. Arrangements are under the Direction of the Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson.
