Taking the hope of Jesus to Tokyo
TOKYO
Greater Tokyo comprises 35 million people. Tokyo is not only the Japanese capital, but very much the heartland of Japan. Downtown Tokyo has a population density of about 22,250 per square kilometer. People are packed onto Tokyo’s busy rail system every day with millions of others, they can live in the same apartment building as hundreds of other people, yet they are often desperately lonely.
OUR GOAL -
To establish innovative churches that bring Christ to the least-reached communities of Japan's largest metropolis.
OUR STRATEGY
We aim to use a ministry centre in a lively part of downtown Tokyo as a platform for establishing a church.
Ministry Centre
The ministry centre will function as a coffee shop outreach, providing a meeting place to form relationships, and a place for outreaches, bible studies, University groups, parenting courses, and a base for a church. We will offer Christian literature, art, music and hand made crafts for sale in the centre. This will place culturally relevant Christian materials in the hands of Japanese as well as supporting other Japanese ministries. We also want to use Christian musicians to provide outreach concerts.
Our prayer is that this centre would become a bridge between the community and the church.
Christian Presence
We want to establish a presence in our local community by getting involved in local events and organizations such as schools and community centres.
Compassion Ministries
We also want to offer compassionate ministries to demonstrate the love of Christ to the largest city on earth. This will include things such as visiting hospitals and nursing homes, working with the homeless, prisoners and people with disabilities, depending on the needs of the local community.
Birthing a Church
We want to draw together the contacts we make through the ministry centre, our presence in the local community and compassion ministries to start a church in the ministry centre.
Japanese Partnership
We want to partner with Japanese believers to work with us from the beginning. We also want to work with other Japanese churches in Tokyo, to see this new ministry established.
Western Partnership
We also want to partner with churches in Australia, Europe and North America. Churches and individuals can partner with us in several ways:
Prayer support
Financial support—
renting property for a community centre and church in downtown Tokyo is a big expense. We will also need finances for setting up the centre to facilitate use as a coffee shop and outreach centre.
Crafts—we want to create a unique link with churches in the west by selling crafts made by Christians in the west.
