I hear it all the time.  What does SEO mean?  If you’re just curious what the acronym stands for, SEO stands for search engine optimization.  If, when asking “What does SEO mean?” you are asking what search engine optimization is, it basically means anything you can do to your site that helps your rankings for your targeted keywords with the search engines.  There are several key things SEO can do and Kurt Steinbrueck from OurChurch.Com clearly explains the main components of SEO in this video.

Be Search Engine Friendly
First, SEO makes sure that your site is readable by search engines. There are some things that a search engine cannot read, for example images and Flash.  You also want to make sure your website is created using good code, has good structure and that your site is easy to navigate.  You want the search engine to be able to navigate your site easily so it can find all your content.

Optimize Your Site
Next you can do some on-page optimization.  This is anything you can do to tell the search engines what your site is about.  You do this by setting up Meta Tags, using keywords within the content of your page, and using other techniques.

Build Authority
The next key issue is determining your website’s authority and then increasing it.  Your site authority is determined primarily by the links are pointing to your website.  The more reputable the site is and the more relevant it is to your website, the more important a link from their site will be.  The more links you have, especially from reputable, relevant sites, the more authoritative the search engines will think you are.  The best way to get links is to create and share interesting and useful content that people would want to link to.

Social Media
Recently, social sharing has become an important tool for SEO.  While social media has been around for a while, it didn’t used to affect search engine results.  Now sites like Facebook, Twitter and Google-plus are starting affect the search engine results.  They are also great ways of getting your content in front of more readers.
