How Do I Get Traffic to My New Website

Full Transcript:

Hi, I’m Kurt Steinbrueck with  In this video I’m going to tell you how to start bringing in traffic for your brand new website.

Now, brand new websites can be difficult to work with because you haven’t had a chance to establish yourself and you don’t have any authority in the search engines, you don’t have probably much of a social presence, so it can be very difficult to start getting that traffic in.  It’s actually a lot harder to start getting traffic than it is to build traffic, but we’re going to help you do that here.

So the first thing that you want to do is you want to make sure that your website has a blog.  I encourage every website to have a blog.  Blogs are a great way to stay in touch with your members and customers, also a great way to reach out and bring in new people.  When you’re creating your blog posts you want to make sure that it’s interesting, original content, stuff that people would want to read or watch, stuff that people would want to share and link to and that’s going to help you out a lot.  So you want to start blogging.  You want to do that regularly, at least once a week, if not more often.

Guest Blogging
Then as you’re blogging I would also encourage you to go connect with other bloggers that are related to what you do on your website so that you can start to get in front of their audiences.  Maybe just at first by commenting, but then eventually if you establish a relationship with that blogger, you might be able to do some guest blogging, which is just a blog post on their blog and then that puts you in front of their audience, which can help to build your own audience and make people, of course, more aware of your website bringing in more traffic.  Because that’s what we’re trying to do here, right?  We are trying to build the audience and bring in more traffic.  So you do that to start, you want to make sure you are doing some blogging and then trying to connect with other bloggers.

Search Engine Optimization
You also want to look into search engine optimization.  Search engine optimization is basically just making sure your site is readable by the search engines and then targeting certain key words and search terms and things like that with the content of your website.  This will help you to be able to start to rank for search phrases when people are searching online.

what do you want to optimize?
Well you want to optimize really just about every page of your website and your blog posts.  You know a lot of people don’t think about optimizing the blog posts, but those are fresh content that you’re putting out there, its interesting stuff and things that people would want to read and share and hopefully link to.  So, you want to optimize for those as well so that when people are searching who don’t already know about you, that they can come across you and hopefully become a part of your audience there.  So you want to be optimizing your pages and your blog posts.

What do you optimize for?
Well the key words and things that you’re going to target, you need to start with the less competitive key words.  A lot of people they want to just jump in and go after the really competitive, really popular key words because they think that’s where all of the traffic is, but if you do that and you are a brand new site, you’re probably going to be ranked around one million and that and no one is ever going to find you.  So you need to start with the less competitive search terms that you may have actually have a chance to rank for so that you can get at least come traffic coming in and then over time you should be able to build your site up to where you can start to go after the more competitive key words.  But in order to do that, you need to be producing that content, be getting it out in front of people so that people are sharing that content and building links to your site so that people are linking to that content.  That’s really important because those links, and maybe to some extent those shares, are what’s going to give your website authority in the search engine so that you can go after those more competitive key words.

Social Media
Alright, some other things to look into, social media.  Go out there and start connecting with people.  Use it to put out the content that you are doing on your blog, but also use it just to connect with people.  Try to engage people in conversations and answer questions and post questions and things like that so that you can start to create a following in the social media that is actually creating relationships, not just, “hey I’m just pushing out content,” because it’s a lot harder to build an audience that way.  But try to reach out to people through the social media.

Groups and Forums
One of the ways that can help you to do that is by also reaching out to people in groups and forums.  Like Facebook has groups, LinkedIn also has groups.  Different social media also have these ways of being able to interact with people in these groups where you can answer questions, you can ask questions, share content, things like that, and so look for already established groups that are related to what you do and try to get involved with those.  Don’t be all pushy and don’t be all self-promotional, go out there and really try to help people, really try to engage with people and then that will help to create those relationships and create a following for you.

Now speaking of Facebook, Facebook also has advertising.  You might want to look into doing some Facebook ads, they have some really great targeting.  There are other ways of advertising.  Advertising is helpful for you if you have the budget for it because unlike SEO and social media and all of these other things, there is really no buildup to advertising.  As long as you’ve got some coin you can get in front of people.  So you can look into AdWords, you can look into Facebook ads, just advertising on people’s websites, all of those things can help to bring in more traffic and it can do it right away, you don’t have to build up to it.  But of course you’re going to be paying for every one of those people that’s coming in there, so you have to make sure that you have the budget to do that.  But that’s certainly something you can do and I would actually recommend trying to do all of these things.

The Overall Strategy
For a brand new site it’s helpful to start with ad advertising and start getting traffic in that way, but you don’t want to ignore the things that take time to build up because then you’re never going to get there and you’re always going to be paying money for this traffic when you could be getting a lot of it for free.  And really when you’re connecting with people through social media, they are more likely to want to really be a part of what you’re doing or be your customer or whatever it is that you do.  Then if you’re in the search engines, naturally actually people tend to respond better to the natural organic listings than they do for the paid listings.

So those are the ways to start bringing in traffic to your website and I encourage you to start doing those.
