If they are new to SEO, they may not really understand all that it takes to provide good SEO services or may not survive as a company.  Also, if they don’t have a proven record, they may not be in business very long.  You want a company that you can be sure will be there for you down the road.

3. What will they do for you?
This is a key question to ask.  There are some things companies may consider SEO, which are not really SEO and will not be all that helpful to your site.  You want to understand what exactly they will be providing for you.  You can ask them if they will be doing link building, content creation and social marketing.

4. Do they have client references who are ranking well?
This will give you an idea of what they have done in the past, as well as gives you a chance to ask a previous client if they enjoyed working with the company.

5. Are they an ethical company?
You may want to ask this in a more subtle way.  For example, you can ask them if there are any ways to speed up SEO.  SEO can be a long process and certain short cuts can be unethical.  Search engines have established certain rules and by breaking them you would be risking your site and your organization’s reputation.  If search engines find that you have violated their terms of service, they can block you.  So, you want to be sure your SEO company is ethical and willing to play by the rules and not risk your organization by cutting corners.

6. Do they understand your organization?
