How Do I Get a Website?

How do I get a website?!?

That’s a question I’m often ask by leaders and communicators who find themselves needing a new website for the very first time.

Maybe, you’re an entrepreneur, you need some website for your new business. Or maybe you’re the principal of the school whose website as it is now is not helping parents and teachers and students communicate very well. Or maybe you’re the pastor or on staff at a church where your website’s looking little outdated, and you want something newer that’s going to help you reach people in your community.

Well, regardless of your situation, if this the first time you’ve been trying to get a website you may  be overwhelmed by the number of options that you have and hardly know where to start.

Hi, I’m Paul Steinbrueck, co-founder and CEO of In this video, I want to help you understand the options that you have for getting a website as well as the pros and cons of those options, so that you can make a good informed decision about the option that’s best for you and your organization.

Now, when it comes getting a website, there are three basic routes you can go: one is with web builder, the second is with web hosting, and the third is with web design. So, let’s take a look at each one of those.

1) Web Builder

First, with a web builder, you go to a website services company and you fill out a series of forms. You pick your template, select the pages you want on your site, type in your content and upload images, and literally within a matter of minutes, you’ve got a brand new site online. Now, the pros of this is that its very simple and it’s also affordable.

The downside of this approach though, is that when you pick a template, it’s probably a template that hundreds if not thousands of other organizations are already using. So, it’s not going to be unique to you and the attractiveness sometimes can be questionable as well.

The other downside of this option is that you usually can’t move your site. If you don’t like your service and you want to move somewhere else, you’ve got to start over. So that’s the web builder option.

2) Web Hosting

Second option is web hosting. And with the web hosting option you go to web hosting company, you purchase a web hosting account and that gives you a place to upload your website. Now this is also an affordable option, and another benefit is that it’s portable. If you don’t like your web hosting company, you can find another web hosting company, get an account and move your site there.

The downside of this option though is that you are wholey responsible for your site. You’ve got to design it for yourself. You can do this either using web design software like Dreamweaver, you’ve got to install a content management system like WordPress or Joomla.

In addition to the installation, you’ve got to pick and install your theme, you’ve got to install plugins, you’ve got maintain it and update it when it needs updating. So, it requires quite a bit of technical skill, and if you don’t have that, this may not be an option for you.

3) Web Design

Your third option when it comes to getting a website is a custom web design. With this option, you go and find your a web designer or web development company, and you have them design a site uniquely for you. Now, this is a great option because it provides you with a beautiful site that is unique to your organization. So it will express your personality and your unique culture. It will also have custom functionality, so it will do what you want it to do.

Another upside of this option is that you don’t need any technical skills to do this, because you’re paying for the technical skills of the designer or developer who creates your site for you.

The one drawback with this option though was the cost. A website even on the very low end is going to cost you at least a thousands dollars. And an average site may cost you $2,000 to $4000. Something with special functionality, it’s going to be up above that.

So those are your three option when it comes to getting a site. A Web Builder, Web Hosting, and Web Design.
