During Website Security Month, we’ve talked a lot of about the importance of getting an SSL so that data sent to and from your website to your website visitors is encrypted, but data encryption is only one aspect of website security.
Website Security Updates
Many websites that get hacked, are hacked because their software has not been kept up to date. You are probably a very busy person, so updating your website, its plugins and themes every time there is a new update can easily get lost in the shuffle.
That’s why do that for our custom church website design clients. And its why websites created with our WP-EZ Church Website Builder are also updated automatically. Nice benefit, right?
Scams and Phishing
Let’s say your website data is encrypted with an SSL and your website software is regularly updated, but a hacker sends you a deceptive “phishing” email and tricks you into putting your password into a fake site. They use your password to gain access to your admin, lock you out of your site, and put malicious content on your website.
Or let’s say the person managing your website gets upset, leaves your church or organization and decides to hijack your website.
Whoa! Scary situations right?
The fact is, no matter how much security technology you have, there’s no way to protect against human error and malice.
Two Levels of Website Backups
This is why all of our church web hosting packages include two layers of backups.
Every night, every website we host is backed up to an offsite location. We keep backups for 30 days. This way, if your website gets hacked, as long as you let us know within 30 days, we can restore it to the way it was before the hacking, give you access again and lock the hacker out.
We also have a RAID backup drive in every server. RAID stands for Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks. It’s basically a second, identical hard drive in each server. This means if the primary hard drive ever fails, we can switch over to the backup drive and have websites up and running again within minutes.
Why do we provide so many security features? Because…
There’s no silver bullet solution with cyber security, a layered defense is the only viable defense. -James Scott
