We’ve been talking all month about website security…

Part of the challenge with website security is you can do everything necessary technologically to secure your website, but you’re still at risk of the “human factor.”

  • People accidentally give away their password to hackers using phishing scams (fake emails containing links to a fake login pages).
  • People share passwords with other staff, volunteers or vendors, who get upset and lock them out of their website.
  • People with access to sensitive data sometimes sell or misuse that data

When hiring a search engine optimization (SEO) professional, one of the most overlooked criteria is trust.

To do their job, an SEO needs access to your web hosting account, your website data, Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and more.  So…

Ask Yourself These 5 Questions about SEO and Trust

  • Can you trust your SEO to protect the passwords you give him or her?
  • Can you trust your SEO to protect and not misuse sensitive website data?
  • Can you trust your SEO to not use “black hat” SEO techniques that could get your website penalized by Google?
  • Can you trust your SEO to recommend the SEO services that will best help your organization and not charge you for a bunch of services you don’t need?
  • Can you trust your SEO to monitor your website, search rankings, and search engines and recommend changes to your website and SEO services when necessary?

So, before you hire some company in India or a guy you’ve never before whose working out of his mother’s basement, ask yourself how well you know and trust them.

It takes 20 years to build a reputation and few minutes of cyber-incident to ruin it. -Stephane Nappo
