Earlier this week I had the opportunity to hike up Mount Rainier with my family. It was a beautiful hike, but it was also hard work.
Before we started the hike, it seemed like the mountain was “right there” but it in reality it was miles away and took hours of walking. Sometimes it seemed like we would never reach our goal, but we persevered and were rewarded with a beautiful view, a sense of accomplishment and a remarkable experience our family will remember for a lifetime.
In many ways search engine marketing is like our hike.
Many people mistakenly believe that with a few quick “tricks” their website can be on the first page of the Google search results within a few weeks. But the reality is, the pursuit of good search rankings for any phrases worth targeting is a long hike.
It takes planning (development of a search marketing plan), preparation (keyword research), and a good start (on-page optimization). Then it takes slow, steady, consistent progress (content development, social media), regularly checking your map and progress to make sure your on the right track (progress and ranking reports).
If you have a good plan and do the hard work of following it, you’re rewarded by reaching your goal.
One thing that makes hiking and search marketing more rewarding is doing it with others. It makes the hard parts easier to endure and the reward even sweeter.
If you’d like to make make the long hike of search marketing together, let me know.
