Should SEO Companies Have Guarantees?

Written by Kurt Steinbrueck

should-seo-companies-have-guarantees-screenIt’s a controversial question.  Should SEO (search engine optimization) companies have guarantees or not?  Many do not.  Some, like OurChurch.Com, do.  So, what’s the debate?  Why are so many SEO companies unwilling to offer a guarantee?

If you boil down the topic, it’s really a question of whether you view a guarantee as claiming the ability to control a specific outcome or do you view it as partnering and sharing the risk for accomplishing a goal.

Many SEO’s view a guarantee as claiming the ability to control specific outcome of the service.  Since no search engine optimizer can actually control the rankings and there are so many factors that go into a ranking, these SEO’s simply say they can’t control it so there is no guarantee.

At OurChurch.Com, however, our understanding of the guarantee is shaped by our mission.  Our mission is to partner with Christian organizations to help them achieve their mission online.  Our focus is on your organization achieving its mission.  So, we see the guarantee as partnering with you to achieve your mission and being willing to take on some of the risk when doing that.  That’s what a partnership is, sharing responsibilities, risks, and rewards.  So, we offer a guarantee because we are confident we can accomplish what we say we will and our end goal is for you to achieve your mission.

What do you think?

  • Should SEO companies offer a guarantee?
  • Would the fact that one company offers a guarantee and others do not affect your decision of which company to choose?

  • This is a tough one. Interesting point of view on it.

I can imagine the guarantee only comes after the campaign research has been done. Some companies that have a guarantee only choose low hanging SEO results. The kind that don't yield much ROI.

What does OurChurch do to help establish achievable goals for the SEO campaigns? Just curious 😉

    • Great question and good point. We approach our guarantee and the keyword selections with the intent of getting you the most productive traffic possible so you make gains in achieving your mission.

OurChurch.Com has a standing guarantee which includes that we have to agree on the keywords being guaranteed. Those keywords are only chosen after exhaustive keyword research. The keyword research examines relevance, popularity, and competition. We also do authority research for the website we are optimizing.

With our Standard level SEO Management service, we then recommend 5 relevant keywords which are generally the most popular keywords the competition research indicates the site can rank well for at the time, though if we think a slightly less popular keyword will produce better results in terms of the goals of the organization, we'll recommend those.

With our Progressive SEO Management service which includes link building we propose not only the best keywords the site can rank well for now, but also a keyword plan of the keywords we will target as the site grows in authority.

In both cases, the client is involved in the selection of the keywords. They usually give suggestions at the start of the research as to what they think would be good to rank for and then once the keyword research is done we discuss the recommendations that we (OurChurch.Com) have put forth.

So, in the end, it's a matter of taking an honest look at the situation and finding the best possible keywords. keywords that get no traffic aren't any help to an organization achieving it's mission, but neither is targeting popular keywords their website has no chance of ranking for at the time. We want you to succeed. That benefits both of us.
