Images are exploding in popularity and significance.

Photo-sharing app Instagram was recently purchase by Facebook for $1 billion.  Pinboard-style social photo sharing site Pinterest is one of the fastest growing social media sites on the planet.  The web is overflowing with infographics, lolcats and inspirational quote imagery.

What’s the big deal?

If you’re scratching your head wondering, “What’s the big deal?” or even “This is stupid,” it’s important to understand that whereas we were primarily a text-based communications culture for centuries (books, newspapers, etc), we have been rapidly transitioning into an image-based communications culture (TV, digital photography, etc).

Text tends to primarily engage the logical part of the brain, while images tend to primarily engage the emotional part of the brain.

If you do any sort of communication with a purpose, you want to engage the whole person – the heart and the mind – which is why using text and images together can be so much more effective that either alone.

For example…

For example, this morning I tweeted…

Which do you think is more impactful?

Well, while 7 of my 58,000 Twitter followers retweeted my tweet, more than 400 of my 20,000 Instagram followers “liked” the image so far.

Made with Over

While adding text to an image is not rocket science, it does take a graphics program, a little bit of skill and some time. But now there is an easier way for iPhone users – an app called Over.

I used Over to create the image above.  It’s fast and easy.

And it’s pretty powerful too – you can change the font, size, shading, position and alignment of the text with just a couple taps.  Save the image and then you can quickly post it Facebook or Instagram right from your phone.

  • What do you think of the rise in popularity of imagery in our culture?
  • Are you using Instagram or Pinterest? Or sharing images on Facebook?
  • Ready to add text to images like a pro with Over?
