Kateri has been very important in my life in times of trial and mourning, especially, a great comfort. I first encountered her the week my father was murdered, April 16, 1982, as I went to pray at Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano, and bought a prayer card of her in the Mission Gift Shop. I have come across her at different important times of my life since then, and went back to the Mission with my mother Harriet, on St. Joseph's Day 2007, the very day, as grace would have it, that the Franciscan fathers were installing the nearly 50 foot high "Gran Retablo" altar piece, made in Spain, in which Kateri is featured as a statue in gold leaf, near the top, to the right of a magnificent crucifix. It is the most impressive memorial I have seen in all the U.S., or anywhere outside of Europe, in fact, and Kateri occupies the place of honor, to the right of the cross, forty feet off the ground, holding a cross in one hand, and a lily in the other. ) You may witness this marvel by googling the online encyclopedia article on "Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano" and they have an excellent photograph of this recent masterpiece, hand made by artisans in Spain and shipped to California.) I returned to the Mission, the Vigil of Kateri's day when she was born into eternal Life, as my mother had died holding my hand, rosary between our palms, that very day, this year, and I went to pray for her there. Please pray for my mother, me, and my deeply spiritually challenged family, and please ask Kateri, our special saint in Heaven, to keep vigil over all of us. Blessed Kateri was always special to me. Years ago my Aunt and I took a car trip to Fonda, NY and enjoyed walking around the Blessed Kateri museum and the church.
