LITTLE FLOWER

By George E. Guntermann

[The following story is for children from 4 to 7 years of age. It is an interactive story book designed with space for the child to illustrate the story for themselves with the idea in mind that the story book be published in one to 20 copies with the child's illustrations and the book cover published with the words, "Illustrated by (the child invovled.")]

**********************

It was one of the best warm days of early spring. The air smelled fresh with the recent rain. The dew was still being changed into sweet vapor by the sun. And the first sprouts of green began to shoot towards the sun from the soft, fertile ground.

(Child's illustration here.)

The shoots grew and grew each day until they were tall and bright green. A strong stalk had also reached up above the heads of the green leaves. On its top was a small head, called a 'bud'. The tall green leaves turned their faces toward the bud and prayed that it would grow and blossom.

(Child's illustration.)

And, grow and blossom it did! Slowly, day by day, it began to open. Beautiful colors began to show. Blue and purple and white and bright yellow, the petals stretched out from that stem. The leaves waved in the soft summer breeze and sang a chorus of praise to God for the beautiful flower that had burst forth in answer to their prayers.

Then, when the blossom was at it's most glorious, its fragrance spread for yards around. Its colors attracted the attention of all of God's creation that came near. And, one that came near was a honeybee. It buzzed around and around the beautiful blossom. And, then, it landed! Right in the middle of the blossom, on the brightest, golden rod that came from its center. The bee began to do a little dance with its wings buzzing and its feet dancing at the same time.

(Child's illustration.)

During the dance, a tiny bit of pollen from the blossom stuck to the bee's feet and legs (just like God planned it). Then, the bee flew away and danced again on another blossom nearby, while another bee came and danced on the blossom of our story. It danced and danced and left some of the other blossom's pollen with our blossom.

This same dance went on for a few days. Then a strange thing took place. The blossom began to droop. Its beautiful petals drooped just a bit at first. But, soon they began to drop to the ground. The green leaves drooped also. They were sad that the beauty of the blossom was fading. But, they knew that this was also part of God's plan. Because, God was now using the energy that had made the blossom to grow tiny seeds in the center of the flower. As the blossom dried, the seeds grew. And, each seed contained a brand new plan for a brand new plant to grow from it.

(Child's illustration.)

Now the air began to cool and the fall wind began to blow. It danced the dying flower back and forth and up and down. As it danced this jerky dance, the seeds that were at its center began to be pulled from the flower by its jerky motion. The gentle arms of the wind then gathered each seed up and sailed it out into the air. Some flew for a few feet and some flew for blocks. But, they all fell to the ground somewhere.

(Child's Illustration.)

One little seed was among them. It fell to the ground where the dirt was soft and moist and full of things it needs. Softly it settled in the soil. Then more rain came down. As the little seed sat on the ground enjoying the soft rain, the rain turned colder. The cooler it got, the deeper the little seed nestled itself into the soil.

Finally, the soil became cold and hard. It gripped the little seed with icy hands and would not let go. Snow fell on the hard, cold ground and covered the little seed in a soft comforter of white. And there the little seed nestled all winter long -- fast asleep. It slept and slept and slept. Through Thanksgiving it slept. Through Christmas it slept. Through January and February it slept.

(Child's illustration.)

Then, in the month of March the little seed began to feel the blanket of snow leave it open again to the gentle rains of early spring. The rains and the warming sun began to soften the soil once again. The little seed felt so cozy in its new bed that it began to stretch a bit. It reached its new little green arms out in an awakening yawn, and came awake to the wonderful breakfast of minerals in the soil. It drank in the raindrops and gobbled the nutrients. Its roots spread out so it could get more and more water and minerals.

(Child's illustration.)

As it spread its green, leafy arms they were stretched toward the warming sun. Up and up they went. Every day they grew very much. Then, they began to notice a tiny but strong stalk in their midst. Up and up it came until, very soon, the leaves had to look up to it.

Finally, the strong, firm stalk stopped growing up and a small bud began to form. The leaves gasped in awe of the bud's strength and beauty. The bud opened and the blossom grew to its full beauty. It smelled wonderful. The people that came gasped in joy at the sight and smell of it. "Glory to God," they exclaimed! Oh, what a beautiful thing it was as it rejoiced in the fullness of its purpose.

That blossom was praising God!

(Child's illustration.)

Do you know? Children are a lot like that budding blossom. God loves to watch as you grow. The people that love you watch and say, "Glory to God!" They rejoice at how you are fulfilling God's purpose in your growing and learning. And they say, "Glory to God! How _____________ is growing and blossoming and bringing praise to Jesus."

(Child's illustration of Jesus smiling at them.)

THE END!
