Church News ![]() January 8, 2005 By Joe Furia (KOMOTV - http://komotv.com/stories/34724.htm) EVERETT - Local volunteers are still doing what they can to help in the massive recovery effort in South Asia. Everett's Indonesian SDA Christian Church is making a difference. They raised thousands dollars to buy supplies to send to tsunami survivors in Indonesia. Saturday they packed more than 60 boxes with blankets, clothes, baby bottles and so many other things that are so desperately needed. "We are so sad to see the problem. That's why we're trying to help them," said volunteer Riany Simbolon. The survivors in Banda Aceh will be on the receiving end of the church's help. Many of the survivors there are Muslim. While there's a long running, divisive conflict between Muslims and Indonesian Christians, the people in Everett say none of that matters right now. "We don't care, as long as they are needy people, so we have to help," explained Eddy Saerang who organized the church's relief efforts. Local Indonesians say now is not the time to focus on differences. "They are also our brothers and sisters, so we would like to help them also," said Pastor Alex Rantung. The tsunami losses in Indonesia are staggering. More than 100,000 people are dead, hundreds of thousands more are homeless. Nearly 1 million Indonesian people are in desperate need of emergency help. While the 60-plus boxes of supplies from Everett can only scratch at the surface of what's needed, they are part of a powerful message of peace and hope. "It's really heartwarming to see this thing and what people have done," said volunteer Eric Sumanti. The Indonesian Christian Church is working with another local Indonesian group to get those all boxes flown overseas. They hope to have them on a plane by Sunday. ![]()
