Remembering Roy
It's hard to believe it's been ten years since Roy Rogers rode away But to his family, friends, and fans he's the King of the Cowboys yet today
The first time I saw Roy and Dale I was a child younger than ten Little did I realize how they'd influence my life as I watched them in person back then
Roy taught me to know right from wrong upon the silver screen He did daring feats on Trigger like I had never seen
Then I saw him on The "Roy Rogers Show" on my TV set each week He fought the bad guys, followed the law, and protected the vulnerable and meek
Yes, I knew Roy as a cowboy lengend with his palomino and trademark white hat But though the years I've come to realize that Roy was much greater than that
He stood up for America and lived by a strict moral code He believed in God and professed that belief in a way that was sincere and bold
He did not let fame and fortune change him, but remained humble all through his life He always found time to visit sick children in an effort to ease their suffering and strife
Many of us have stories about him and lessons we learned from Roy Or moments in our past when he brought us special joy
Although he has not walked on this earth now for really quite a while Thoughts of him bring to our minds both a tear and a smile
In helping to keep his memory alive we can pledge to do our parts For those who loved him Roy is not really gone - he lives within our hearts.

Howdy Pardners,
The 2008 Roy Rogers Festival will be remembered fondly by *The King of the Cowboys* and *Queen of the West*
fans for many years to come! Roy and Dale's daughter, Dodie Rogers-Patterson and husband Jon Patterson were a stupendous hit with everyone who attended the 25th Anniversary special celebration. Jon sang and played his guitar at the Early-Bird Reception on Wednesday evening, and at the "Cadillac Ranch Concert" on Friday evening. He had some of the crowd line dancing before we all left. Dodie was very popular with the fans and collectors in the Dealer's Room. She had several nice items from the Roy Rogers-Dale Evans Museum at her table. She brought some nice family photos to share with all us fans. Both Dodie and Jon participated in everything and seemed to genuinely have a good time. They left promising to return next year.
"KG and the Ranger" were also a huge hit with Roy and Dale fans and the crowd at the "Cadillac Ranch". Their blended and superb talents along with Ranger Rick's fancy trick roping, mesmerized the crowd. After the Grand Banquet Saturday evening, KG and Ranger Rick performed an unforgettable "Western Music Concert". This husband-wife duo
well-deserve all the awards and declarations they have achieved! If you've seen them in concert or at a western gathering, you know what I mean. If not, you've missed some great western and cowboy music.
Ray White was just marvelous! He had to travel around the flood waters in Indiana, but he made it in time to speak at the "Portsmouth Kiwanis Club Luncheon" on Wednesday, June 4, 2008. He was definitely a hit, because he was invited back next year. Our own Roy Rogers Festival chairman, LaRue Horsley is a twenty-six year member of that club and says that was quite a compliment to Ray. Ray also did a great job as Master of Ceremonies at the "Grand Banquet" on Saturday evening. If you haven't gotten his awarding book, "King of the Cowboys", Queen of the West": Roy Rogers and Dale Evans", you need to order a copy. Ray is a premier authority on Roy and Dale and on the B-Western movies made in the 1930's and 1940's.
Donna Martell and Dale Berry, regulars at the festival, are always well received by the festival fans. Donna has been invited back several times as she's one of the fans favorite guest stars. She has become known as our "Festival Sweetheart" and always participates in everything. Donna was even caught dancing up a storm at the "Cadillac Ranch" Friday evening. Dale Berry is considered to be part of our Roy Rogers Festival Family . In 2008 Dale returned after a few years absence. His quick wit and western flair comes by easily for Dale as his "Big Texas Heart" shines through. He has a "special love" for children and children's charities. He helps to raise awareness and lots of money for their charities. We take our cowboy hat off to you Dale.
William "Bill" Smith and Joanne Cervelli-Smith have been favorites of the Roy Rogers Festival attendees. We thought it a natural to have them return to Portsmouth to help us celebrate the Roy Rogers Festival 25th Anniversary. Bill's rough n' tough character roles are just that. In reality, Bill is a "teddy bear". Joanne was noticed having a good time out on the dance floor.
Russ McCubbin is a festival regular. He resides in his hometown of Charleston, WV. Russ was his usual comic self. Russ was Clint Walker's double in all of the classic western TV series, "Cheyenne". Russ sang on stage at the Cadillac Ranch and did a great job! Go get 'em Russ!!
All of the Guest Stars were on a local Portsmouth, OH radio show Thursday morning, and KG and The Ranger performed on the radio show Friday morning.
The tour to Roy's Boyhood Home was extra special this year! We filled the bus and had several cars driving from the host hotel, Ramada Inn, as well as several vehicles joining us around the immediate area.
There were special presentations from the Ohio Legislature and the Scioto County Commissioners. Numerous awards and certificates were given to the Roy Rogers Festival Committee members, along with festival attendees. The last stop on the tour was at the location of Roy's elementary school. All went inside the building for a pleasant visit and photos. The tour was even more special, because Roy and Dale's daughter and husband, Dodie and Jon were with us. We believe it may have been Dodie's and Jon's first visit to her dad's Boyhood Home.
The Annual Costume Contest Saturday afternoon had some first time participants this year as well as some old favorites (no emphasis on old). Roy Rodney Dillow as ROY ROGERS and his four year old granddaughter, Olivia, as LITTLE MISS DALE EVANS took 1st place in both categories. Their photo even made the front page of the "Portsmouth Daily Times" on Sunday, June 8th.
We had a "New Event" this year and it was well attended. Saturday morning, June 7th, longtime fan, Dave Mantor of Indiana, officiated a meeting for the "Roy Rogers - Dale Evans Fan Message Board" members and any one else who wanted to attend. Special Guest and author, Ray White was thespecial speaker and his topic was on the numerous variations and artists, and themes of "Happy Trails", written by our own Dale Evans for Roy, as she felt he needed his own theme-song. Dave (Cowpokey D on the RR-DE Fan message board) was excited about how well the event was received. It will be included on our 2009 Roy Rogers Festival schedule.
The attendance at the festival was nearly the same as last year. Even though some of "our regulars" could not attend, we had several new people including a tour with twenty-eight from Lexington, KY that visited the Dealer's Room on Saturday.
The dates for the 2009 Roy Rogers Festival are JUNE 3-6, 2009!!!! Please mark your calendars now, and pray for "no floods or tornados". You cannot miss it!! Our theme: Roy Rogers Festival 2009: "BEGINNING THE NEXT 25 YEARS".
