THE FIRST PROPOSED GREAT SEAL OF AMERICA
THE FIRST PROPOSED GREAT SEAL OF AMERICA BY THOMAS JEFFERSON AND BENJAMIN FRANLIN:
FIRST PROPOSED AMERICAN SEAL BY FRANKLIN & JEFFERSON IN 1776
source: source: "Religion and the Congress of the Confederation, 1774-89"
Returning again to the year 1776: after the signing of The Declaration of Independence, a committee in Congress was formed to draft a national seal that would express the spirit of America. Both Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin were on this committee:
THOMAS JEFFERSON
Thomas Jefferson proposed for America's national seal:
"The children of Israel in the wilderness, led by a cloud by day, and a pillar of fire by night." (3,24)
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN
Benjamin Franklin then suggested:
"Moses lifting up his wand, and dividnig the Red Sea, and Pharaoh in his chariot overwhelmed with the waters. This motto, 'Rebellion to tyrants is Obedience to God'." (3,24)
