The Goose & the Princess
![]() The most unique thing about their very special love was that Ted was only a goose, while Christal was a very beautiful princess. It's quite unusual for a princess to fall in love with a goose, you know, especially not a goose as old and wrinkled and fat as Ted was. But Christal saw deep into Ted and knew that inside he had more important things, like faithfulness and humor and passion, and very wisely she decided that those were the things that were important to her. He was not very wise, but he knew human nature and he knew his princess inside and out and was willing to give all of his goose life to her, so she really didn't care at all that he was only a goose. And Ted saw even better things in her and knew that at last his heart had found its one true love. They were really very, very happy. One day, though, Christal became very sad and nobody could say why. Ted understood thoiugh, because he knew that the pressures of being a beautiful princess were much heavier and harder to bear than even the wisest physicians could ever imagine. "I love you very much," he would tell her softly, "and I will never leave you no matter what." He hugged her and kissed her lovely dimples and gently stroked her long, beautiful hair. "You will get better, I promise," he assured her. He brought her chocolates and medicine and many very nice and thoughtful gifts as well. All through her sadness he never left side, even when she felt so bad that she couldn't even talk to him, and their love grew even stronger because of it. Eventually Christal felt better, just as the goose had promised, and the two of them decided to get married. That a goose and a princess so much in love would eventually come to such a decision ought not to have been a surprise to anyone, but many people can only see appearances and so can not really ever understand the special kind of love that these two shared. "Of course, we have nothing against geese in general," her family objected, "but this one is much too old and wrinkled and fat. Maybe you should start a business or go back to school instead." They were hoping, of course, that she would meet a nice young duck or maybe a handsome stallion that would make her forget about that silly old goose she thought she was in love with. Christal loved her family very much, almost as much as she loved her goose, but she believed quite correctly that she could make her own decisions. Still, it was very important to her that her family be happy with her, so she agreed to try many of the ideas and theories they had about her marriage. Ted went along with most of these things too, not because he always agreed, but because he loved Christal very much and couldn't bear to see her unhappy for even one second. The problem here is that everybody wanted Ted and Christal to love each other in the way that they thought was most ideal. They couldn't see that their love was special and unique precisely because it was theirs and did not come just from a book or from anybody else's ideas. There was another problem, too. Ted was simply not able to find enough pennies to pay for everything that everybody wanted him to do. He soon became very poor and sad. Princess Christal worried that their life might always be like this and that they might never again be happy and carefree like before. The birds still sang and the wind still whispered of their special love, but it became harder and harder for both of them to hear. "I love my goose," Christal thought to herself, "but I don't think we are very happy anymore and I'm worried it will never go back to where it was." Her family immediately agreed and tried to convince her that her best bet was to send the silly goose packing as quickly as possible. Christal worked very hard to help her goose find enough pennies, and when it still wasn't enough she tried even harder to cheer him up, but the goose just got sadder and sadder because it was starting to look like he would never have enough pennies to make his beautiful princess happy. They started to get crabby with each other and sometimes said hurtful things that they both wished they could take back. Finally it got to the point where they didn't even see each other for a whole week. To everybody else this was wonderful news. They were sure that the princess had finally come to her senses and would finally get over her infatuation with that silly old goose soon enough. But She and Ted were both very miserable. They missed each other terribly. They had never been apart for so long and the overpowering loneliness they both felt without each other was so strong that they each just cried and cried every day. Finally, after one very long and sad week, neither of them could take it any longer. "We have been very foolish," Christal told Ted, and Ted agreed. "We must never again let other people tell us how to love each other," said Ted, and with this Christal also agreed. They promised right then and there that they would never again let anything interfere with their dreams for the future, for they both knew that their love was truly a very unique and special gift. They started making plans for their future, and once again they were very, very happy. ![]() |
