BEING POOR
When I was growing up in West Virginia my Mama worked really hard at making sure I didn't know we were quite poor. She made all of my dresses from clothes that were given to her. She would sew on bows and ribbons and lace, and to the world I looked Rich. I often had kids tell me how rich I was. Mama always saw to it that on Saturday when we dropped by the FIVE and DIME (5 and 10 cent store) that I was able to take something new to school on Monday. I remember with fondness some of those little trinkets that made me feel special. I always got new erasers, pencils, sharpeners, and crayons. I can remember something that cost 25 cents ( THAT was a lot of money back then) It was a large YELLOW pencil shape carrying case with a zipper and a handle. It looked like an oversized pencil. I will never forget it. It was my favorite thing when I was a kid.
When I got older my Mama told me how she would sew my clothes. She would get a pair of GLORIA VANDERBELT jeans given to her in a size I couldn't wear, and she'd sew that tag on so perfect that no one knew the difference.
When my little girl and I started life on our own after my divorce I made sure that I put back every spare penny so that on Friday we could go out to Burger king to eat. It wasn't an expensive thing to do because I only shared her fries and drink, but it created a bond for us that made wonderful memories. I then learned that you may be POOR in the comparison of others around you...But those precious moments of time we shared made us RICH indeed.
My little girl never had big tv's or gameboys, or new fangles devices, but what she did have was a Mama that loved her with all of her heart and she learned early that sometimes it's the simple things in life...that make us rich, not what we can show off to others.

Now I would be lying if I said I would not like to be rich, I think about how different our lives would be, but I am thankful for the life God has given us so far.
