PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY PAGE
The Lord said to Moses: Speak to the Israelites, and tell them to make fringes on the corners of their garments throughout their generations and to put a blue cord on the fringe so that, when you see it, you will remember all the commandments of the Lord and do them, and not follow the lust of your own heart and your own eyes. So you shall remember and do all my commandments, and you shall be holy to your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God:
I am the Lord your God.

Numbers 15: 37-41

About the Prayer Shawl Ministry

Our church's prayer shawl ministry began with a small group of women who decided to knit "healing shawls" after hearing a presentation by Linda Wagner and Ginger Mileski. Linda and Ginger are members of the Lebanon First Congregational Church www.lebanonfirstcong.org and spoke about their shawl ministry at our Thanksgiving Eve service, Several of our members are now knitting shawls for women, men and children, family members and friends. They are intended to offer comfort in times of illness, joy and celebration, and special occasions in someone's life.

For centuries shawls have been worn by women and men. They give comfort and solace. They embrace the wearer with much love given with God's blessing. Many prayers and blessing are woven into every stitch as the knitter knits each shawl. This prayer shawl ministry program began in 1998 through the efforts of graduates of the Womens' Leadership Institute at Hartford Seminary. It has now expanded across the country with hundreds, if not thousands, of people knitting these shawls.

Each shawl begins with a special dedication of prayer. It is sometimes done in a group of knitters and sometimes done alone by the knitter. As the knitter works on the shawl she focuses on the recipient, knitting in her prayers and blessings as she knits and purls. Upon completion the shawl receives a final blessing by the group before it is presented to the recipient.

For more information on the shawl ministry program we invite you to visit www.shawlministry.com. To learn more about the shawl ministry at our church please contact the church office (860) 642-7887. There are many ways to participate in the ministry, one does not have to be able to knit. All who wish to be involved are welcome.

"You created my inmost self, knit me together in my mother's womb.
For so many marvels I thank you: a wonder am I,
And all your works are wonders."
