Global Warning
|
Heat from the sun enters the atmosphere in the form of light and radiation. Most of it is reflected off but many are held in by greenhouse gases. These gases include water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone. With the heat trapped inside, it quickly starts wreaking havoc. Starting with atmospheric temperatures, going to oceans and finally to continental surface. The increase in oceanic temperatures increase evaporation which increases precipitation on the mainland and melts the polar ice.(1)
I know what you may be thinking. "I thought this was a political site." Two things: first, I also said social; second, this is very much political. It is political, social, economical and starting to get militaristic.
There has been a lot of talk on the Global Warming "proofs". The Arctic ice is melting, temperature increases, water temp increases and the Antarctic Peninsula shelf melting. But skeptics ask, "Isn't there another possibility?"
Since recorded history there have been writings about temperature changes. The Norse themselves were driven out due to excess population when the temperature increased enough to support larger crops. In the 16th-18th centuries there was a period referred to as the "Little Ice Age." One American colonist wrote that it was a year without a winter. But if it is not our own emissions that are doing this, what is?
There are small volcanoes occurring beneath the ocean surface called Petit Spot Volcanoes have been discovered away from the breaks in the tectonic plates.(2) These are heating up the water in their areas causing the increase in precipitation. There are currently only two confirmed and the rest is theoretical.
A 407 degree Centigrade hydrothermal vent has been found in the Atlantic Ocean and German-American researchers have found more hydrothermal activity than ever expected in the Arctic Ocean. Some so extreme that they could see the under water rivers.(3)
These anomalies are caused by cracks in the ocean floor where molten rock from the mantle creep to the surface. This increases the temperature around them. The warm water also carries with it carbon dioxide, which they both travel to the surface of the water and the CO2 gets released into the atmosphere.
The ocean is the heat exchanger. Naturally, as moisture warms it is released as vapor until it reaches a cooler area. It then comes down as precipitation. My inspiration for this article came when I spoke with a Sprint Retail store in southern California. It had reached 92*F where he was at. Meanwhile, Kansas City managed to get three snow storms since the New Year. Colorado received 20ft of snow in one week and upstate New York is buried under 12ft of snow. The air immediately by the heat exchanger is always warmer than distant areas. California does not see the precipitation because their temperature is directly affected by the ocean. Inland US, however, is cooler and receives the brunt of the moisture that completely passed the west.
To add, with the volcanoes releasing the CO2, there is an increase in CO2 levels in the atmosphere. I only say that because every time the CO2 levels exceed 300 parts per million, we suffer another Ice Age.(3) Although junking your cars and riding bicycles will help with pollution and health issues, it will not stop the coming storm.
