Ecclesiastes - Lamentations ![]() Chapter 1: Verse 1-the words of David’s son who was the teacher of wisdom. Verse 8-all things are wearisome some people say. The eye never has enough of seeing nor the ear its full of hearing. Verse 12-Solomon, the teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem, he devoted himself to study and to explore wisdom in all that is done under heaven. That is a heavy burden to be laid on anyone. Chapter 2: Verse 9-I became greater by far then anyone in Jerusalem before me, in all this my wisdom stayed with me. Verse 13-I saw that wisdom is better than folly just as light is to darkness. Chapter 3: Verse 1-there is a time for everything: 1-a time to be born and to die; 2-a time to plant and a time to uproot; 3-a time to kill and to heal; 4-a time to tear down and a time to build; 5-a time to weep and to laugh; 6-a time to mourn and a time to dance; 7-a time to scatter stones and to gather them; 8-a time to embrace and a time to refrain; a time to search and a time to give up; 10-a time to keep and a time to throw away; 11-a time to tear and a time to mend; 12-a time to be silent and to speak; 13-a time to love and to hate; 14-a time for war and a time for peace. Verses 11-14-God, He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of man yet man cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. Chapter 4: Verse 10-if one man falls down his friend can help him up, but pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up. Verses 13-16-it is better for a poor but wise youth than an old but foolish king who no longer knows how to take a warning. Chapter 5: Verses 1-3-guard your steps when you go to the house of God (church), go near and listen rather than to offer sacrifice of fools and they do not know that they are wrong. Verses 4-7-when I saw that mans envy of his neighbor, they are chasing after the wind. When you make a vow to God do not delay in fulfilling it. He (God) has no pleasure in fools; do what God says. Therefore stand in awe of God! Verse 10-whoever loves money never has money enough! Chapter 6: Verses 3-6-a man may have 100 children and live a long time, if he cannot enjoy his life, I say that a stillborn child is better off than he. I say, “do not all go to the same place?” (Revelation 22:18-19-abortion) Chapter 7: Verses 1-5-the day of death is better than the day of birth, for death is the destiny of everyone. Verse 16-do not be over righteous (Proverbs 3:7) and do not be over wise; why destroy yourself (Proverbs 1:7). Chapter 8: Verse 13-because the wicked do not fear God it will not go well with them and their days will not be long. Prov. 3:1,2. Chapter 9: Verse 16-I said, “wisdom is better than strength, but the poor mans wisdom is despised and his words are no longer heeded.” Chapter 10: Verse 12-words from a wise mans mouth are gracious, but a fool is consumed by his own lips; at the beginning his words are folly and at the end they are wicked madness. Chapter 11: Verse 5-as you do not know the path of the wind or how the body is formed in the mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the work of God. He is maker of all things (John 3:3-7,8) Chapter 12: Verse 1-remember your creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, “I find no pleasure in my life.” Verse 7-and the dust of man returns to the ground it came from and the spirit returns to God who gave it. Verses 13-14-now all this has been heard, here is the conclusion, fear God and keep His commandments, for God requires it. Chapter 1: Verses 13-15-the one I love is a fragrance of love, how beautiful she is. Verse 16-and how handsome you are she says to him. Chapter 2: Verse 7-daughters of Jerusalem, and all women, I charge you by the land, do not arouse or awaken love until so desires. Chapter 3: Verse 2-I will search for the one my heart loves, so I looked for him but did not find him. Verse 4-then when I found him I held him and would not let him go. Verse 11-the one that is loved is Solomon the King, wearing his crown on the day of his wedding, and his heart was rejoicing. Chapter 4: Verse 7-you are so beautiful, you are my darling, there is no flaw in you. Chapter 5: Verse 9-his is your beloved better than others, she is most beautiful of women. Verse 12-and his eyes are like doves by the water streams mounted like jewels. Chapter 6: Verse 3-I am my lover’s and my lover is mine; he is browsing among the lilies. Chapter 7: Verse 10-I belong to my lover and his desire is for me (that is love-I Corinthians 13:4-7). Chapter 8: Verse 4-men and women in all your ways I charge you do not arouse or awaken love until so desired. Verse 14-come away my love, I love you. (Isaiah was martyred under Manasseh) Chapter 1: Verse 2-hear, O earth, listen, the Lord has spoken. My children have rebelled against Me. Verses 11-14-the multitude of your sacrifices, what are they to Me? I have no pleasure in the blood of bulls, lambs or goats. “Stop bringing meaningless offerings,” the Lord said, “My soul hates this.” Verses 17-18-learn to do right! Seek justice! Come to Me, let us reason together all you people. The Lord says, “though your sins are like scarlet they will be made as white as snow; and if they are red like crimson, they will be made like wool.” Verse 20-if you resist this and rebel you will be devoured, the Lord has spoken. Verse 28-the rebellious sinners will be broken and those who forsake the Lord will perish. Chapter 2: Verses 4-5-God will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. The nations will not take up sword against nations nor will they train for war anymore. Come, O house of Jacob, let us walk in the light of the Lord (Matthew 5:14-15; Revelation 7:4-10). Verses 10-11-go into the rock for dread of the Lord and His splendor of His majesty! The pride of man will be brought low, the Lord alone will be exalted. Verse 22-stop trusting in man! Who has put breath in his nostrils? Chapter 3: Verse 12-youths will oppress My people, and women will rule over them. O, My people, your guides lead you astray, they turn you from the path. Verses 18-26-in that day the Lord will snatch away all of it. Chapter 4: Verse 1-in the days to come 7 women will take hold of one man and say, “we will eat our own food and provide our own clothing, only let us be called by your Name.” Chapter 5: Verses 11-12-the Lord said, “woe to those who rise early in the morning to run after their drinks of wine and who stay up late at night till they are inflamed with that wine. In this they have no regard for the deeds of the Lord and no respect for the work of the Lord’s hands.” Verse 16-but the Lord Almighty will be exalted by His justice, and God will show Himself holy by His righteousness (Hebrews 12:14). Verses 21-24-woe to those who call evil good and good evil and who call darkness light and light darkness. Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes (Proverbs 3:7), they have rejected the law of the Lord Almighty and His Word (Mark 13:31-God said, “heaven and earth shall pass away, but not My words.) Chapter 6: Verses 1-3-the Lord was sitting on a throne and the seraphs were calling to one another, “holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty, the whole earth is full of His glory.” Verses 5-6-Isaiah said, “woe is me, I am a man of unclean lips and I live among a people of unclean lips and I have seen the King of Kings, the Lord Almighty.” And one of the seraphs touched my lips and said, “your sin is atoned for.” Chapter 7: Verse 9-if you do not stand firm in your faith you will not stand at all. Heb. 11:6. Verses 13-14-Isaiah said, “it is not enough to try the patience of man, you will try the patience of God also. So, therefore, the Lord Himself will give you a sign, a virgin will be with a child and give birth to a son and will call Him Immanuel (Jesus-Matthew 18:21-verse 21, He will save His people from their sins-verse 22, He is called Immanuel). Chapter 8: Verses 1-10-the Lord said to Isaiah, “write on a scroll this, ‘I have witnesses to what I say, the plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the King of Assyria.’” Then He spoke again, “its wings will cover the breadth of all your lands, O Immanuel.” Verses 11-22-fear God! (v. 20). If people do not speak according to God’s Word they have no light in them. Chapter 9: Verse 2-the people walking in darkness have seen a great light; those living in the land of the shadow of deaths, on them a light has come (Hosea 2:23; Romans 9:25). Verses 6-7-then to us, all of us, a child is born and is given and all governments will be on His shoulders, and He (Jesus) will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace, and this is forever. Chapter 10: Verses 23-25-the Lord Almighty will carry out the destruction decreed upon the whole land and very soon My anger against you will end. Chapter 11: Verses 6-a little child will lead many of them. Verses 8-9-the infant will play near the cobra and the young child will but his hand into the vipers nest. They will not be harmed nor destroyed on My holy mountain and will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord. Chapter 12: Verses 2-3-surely God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord (Jesus), yes the Lord (Jesus), is my strength and my song, He has become my salvation. With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation (John 4:13-14). Verse 4-now make known among the nations what He has done (Matthew 28:18-20). Chapter 13: Verses 9-10-(Isaiah saw something concerning Babylon) see the day of the Lord is coming, a cruel day with God’s wrath and fierce anger, to make the land desolate and destroy the sinners within it. The stars of heaven and their constellations will not show their light and the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light. Chapter 14: Verse 12-(Satan’s doom) God said to Satan, “how you have fallen from heaven, O morning star (Satan), son of the dawn. You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations. Rev. 20:14,15. Verses 13-19-you said, I will raise my thrown above God, I will make myself like the Most High God, but those who see you stare at you and said, ‘is this the man who shook the earth,’ but you are cast out.” (Revelation 20:7-10). Verse 27-the Lord Almighty has purposed and who can stop Him? Chapter 15: Verse 1-an oracle concerning Moab: Ar is Moab is ruined, destroyed in one night; Kir in Moab is ruined and destroyed in a night also. Chapter 16: Verse 4-let the Moabite fugitives stay with you; be their shelter from the destroyer. Verse 5-in God’s love a throne will be established in faithfulness, a man (Jesus) will sit on it, one from the house of David; He is speeding the cause of righteousness. Chapter 17: Verses 1-6-an oracle concerning Damascus: Verses 7-8-in that day men will look to their maker and turn their eyes to the Holy One of Israel. They will not look to the altars, the work of their hands. Verse 10-you have at times forgotten God your Savior, you have not remembered the Rock (Matthew 16:17-18). God is the Rock. Chapter 18: Verse 3-all you people of the world, you who love the earth, when a banner is raised on the mountains, you will see it, and when a trumpet sounds you will hear it (Acts 1:6-9). Chapter 19: Verse 1-an oracle concerning Egypt! See the Lord rides on a swift cloud and is coming to Egypt. The idols of Egypt tremble before Him and the hearts of the Egyptians melt within them. Verse 21-in that day the Lord will make Himself known to the Egyptians, and in that day they will acknowledge the Lord, they will worship with sacrifices. Chapter 20: Verses 3-4-then the Lord said, “just as my servant Isaiah has gone, stripped and barefoot for 3 years as a sign against Egypt and Cush, so the King of Assyria will lead away, stripped and barefoot, the Egyptians captive, both young and old. Verse 5-those who trusted in Cush (another god) and boasted in Egypt, they will be afraid and put to shame (Romans 1:16-17). The just will live by faith. Chapter 21: Verses 8-13-the lookout shouted, “day after day Lord I stand on the watchtower, all night I stay at my post.” (Matthew 24:3-13) Chapter 22: Verse 22-God said to Isaiah, “I will place on His shoulder the key to the house of David, and what He opens no one can shut and what He shuts no one can open.” Chapter 23: Verse 9-the Lord Almighty planned it, to bring low the pride of all glory and humble all who are renowned on the earth. Chapter 24: Verses 1-6-the earth is defiled by its people, they have disobeyed the laws and violated God statutes and broken the everlasting covenant. They will be consumed and the people bear their guilt (Matthew 24:34-35). Chapter 25: Verses 8-9-God will swallow up death forever and He will wipe away the tears form all peoples faces; He will remove the disgrace of all His people from the earth. The Lord said, “It is in that day they will say, ‘this is our God, we trusted in Him and He saved us.’” (John 3:16). Heb. 5:1-6. Chapter 26: Verses 3-4-You, God, will keep in perfect peace Him whose mind is steadfast because he trust in You. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord is the Rock Eternal. Verse 13-O Lord, our God, other gods besides You have ruled over us but Your Name alone we honor. Verse 20-go, My people, enter your rooms and shut the doors behind you; hide yourselves for a little while so God’s wrath can pass by (Matthew 6:6). Chapter 27: Verse 12-in the day of the Lord, He will thresh from the flowing Euphrates and to the Wadi of Egypt, and you, O Israelites, will be gathered up one by one, and in that day a great trumpet will sound. Those who were perishing in Assyria and those exiled in Egypt will come and worship the Lord on this holy mountain in Jerusalem. Chapter 28: Verses 3-9-(drunkards will be trampled under foot) but in the day of the Lord there will be a glorious crown for His people. He will be a Spirit of justice to Him who sits in judgment. Verses 16-17-so this is what the sovereign Lord says, “see, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone (Jesus), a precious cornerstone (Jesus) for a sure foundation in the one who trust Him will never be dismayed.” Verse 29-all things come from the Lord Almighty! They are wonderful in counsel and magnificent in wisdom. Chapter 29: Verse 6-the Lord God Almighty will come with thunder and earthquake and great noise, with windstorm and tempest and flames of a devouring fire (Matthew 7:15-24). Verse 15-woe to those who go to great depth to hide their plans from the Lord (Matthew 7:21-23). Verse 16-shall what is formed say to Him who formed it, “He did not make me?” Can the pot say to the potter, “you know nothing.” (read verses 18-24 and Revelation 14:1-5) Chapter 30: Verses 9-11-there are rebellious people and children unwilling to listen to the Lord’s instruction. They say to the prophets, “give us no more visions of what is right, tell us pleasant things and prophesy illusions.” Verses 15-18-this is what the Lord says, “in repentance is your salvation; the Lord longs to be gracious to you, He rises to show you compassion. For He, the Lord, is a God of Justice, they who wait for His is blessed.” Verses 21-22-if you turn right or left you will hear a voice saying, “this is the way, walk in it, then you will throw your idols away and say, ‘away with you.’” Chapter 31: Verse 2-the Lord can bring disaster, He does not take back His words. He will rise up against the house of the wicked and against all who help evildoers. Chapter 32: Verses 7-8-the evil mans methods are wicked, he makes up evil schemes to destroy the poor with lies even when the plea of the needy is just. But the noble man makes noble plans and by noble deeds he can stand. Verse 17-the fruit of righteousness will be peace and the effect of righteousness will be quietness and confidence forever. Verse 20-how blessed you will be! Chapter 33: Verse 2-O Lord, be gracious to us for we long for You. Be our strength every morning and our salvation in time of distress. Verses 16-17-this is the man who will dwell on heights; his eyes will see the King in his beauty and view a land that stretches afar. Verse 22-for the Lord is our judge, the Lord God is our lawgiver, the Lord (Jesus) is our king; it is He who will save us. Chapter 34: Verse 1-come near, you nations, and listen; pay attention you peoples! Let all the earth hear and all that is in it, the world and all that comes out of it. Chapter 35: Verses 4-5-say to those with fearful hearts, “be strong, do not fear, your God will come, then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf will be unstopped. Verse 8-and then a highway will be there, it will be called the way of holiness. The unclean will not journey on it, it is for those who walk in God’s way, the fool will not go on it (Psalm 14:1). Chapter 36: Verses 13-22-the commander of Assyria said, “do not let Hezekiah deceive you, don’t let him tell you to trust the Lord.” Joash went to Hezekiah and told him what the commander had said. Chapter 41: Verses 22-29-He said, “bring in your idols to tell what is going to happen and let the idols tell us what the former things were or declare things to come, so tell us what the future holds if you are gods. Now you are less than nothing, and he who chooses you is detestable (Exodus 20:1-6-no other gods, God is one God). Chapter 42: Verses 1-8-here is My servant, My chosen one in whom I delight (Matthew 1:20-21; 3:17; 17:5). I am the Lord, that is My Name! I will not give my glory to another or my praise to idols (John 6:27-28; 14:6-9). Verse 17-those who trust in idols and who say to images, “you are our gods,” will be turned back in utter shame. Chapter 43: Verses 3-5-(Israel’s only Savior is God) “I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; you are my witnesses,” said the Lord, “and the one I have chosen, do not be afraid, for I am with you.” (Matthew 28:20) Verses 11-13-(God and Jesus are one) I, even I am the Lord, and apart from Me there is no Savior. Chapter 44: Verses 6-8-this is what the Lord says, “Israel’s King (Messiah Jesus) and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty, I am the first and the last, apart from Me there is no god. No, there is no other Rock, no not one! I established my ancient people and also that what is yet to come, let us foretell what will come.” (Romans 9:25; Hosea 2:23) Verses 14-19-man cut down cedars or oak, he makes it fuel to warm himself, but he also fashions a god and worships it; half of the wood he burns in the fire and prepares his meal, and from the rest he makes a god his idol, and bows down and worships it. He prays to it and says, “save me, you are my god,” shall I bow down to a block of wood (John 4:23-24-be truthful to God). Chapter 45: Verses 5-9-I am the Lord and there is no other; apart from Me there is no god. I the Lord bring prosperity and I create disaster; I do all these things. Does the clay say to the potter, “what are you making?” Verses 11-12-this is what the Lord says concerning things to come, “do you question Me about My children or give Me orders about the work of My hands? I stretched out the heavens and their starry hosts.” (verses 18-25; John 12:31-32) Chapter 46: Verses 5-7-God said, “whom will you compare Me or count Me their equal? Some people pour out gold and hire a goldsmith to make it a god, and then they bow down and worship it. They set it up in one place and there it stands, then one cries out to it and it does not answer and it cannot save him. Verses 8-10-remember Me and take this to heart, I am God and there is no other; I make known the beginning and what is still to come. Chapter 47: Verses 12-14-keep on, man with your magic spells and with your many sorceries, all the counsel you have received has worn you out; let your astrologers come, let them save you from what is coming. All they are is stubble and they will burn up, they cannot even save themselves. Chapter 48: Verses 3-5-God said, “I foretold the former things to come a long time ago, I made them known, and I acted and they came to pass, for I knew how stubborn you are.” Verse 17-this is what the Lord says, your Redeemer (Jesus), the Holy One says, “I am the Lord your God who will teach you what is best for you, and directs you in the way you should go.” (John 8:18-19) Chapter 49: Verse 6-God said to Isaiah, “it is too small a thing for you to be My servant and to bring back those of Israel. I will also make you a light for the gentiles so that you may bring My salvation to the ends of the earth.” Verse 22-see, I will beckon to the gentiles, I will lift up My banner to all people. Verse 26-then all mankind will know that I, the Lord, am your Savior and your Redeemer (John 1:10-13). Chapter 50: Verses 6-8-(Isaiah about Jesus) I offered My back to those who beat Me, My cheek to those who bulled out My beard; I did not hide My face from their mocking and spitting, and I know I will not be put to shame (Mark 15:16-20). Chapter 51: Verses 6-7-lift up your eyes to the heavens, look at the earth beneath; the heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment, but My salvation will last forever, My righteousness will never fail. Hear Me you who know Me and know what is right, you people who have my law in your hearts and do not fear the reproach of man. Chapter 52: Verse 7-(Gentiles/Zion) how beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace and who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “your God reigns!” Verse 10-The Lord will show the Lord to all! Verse 15-so the Lord will sprinkle many nations and kings will shut their mouths because of Him; what they were not told they will see and understand (Hebrews 1:13-14). Chapter 53: (Jesus) Verses 1-4-who believed whose arm is revealed? He had no beauty to attract us to Him, He was despised by men, surely He (Jesus) took our sins. Verses 5-9-He was pierced for our sin and by His wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray (Romans 3:23; 6:23) but the Lord laid our sin on Him (Jesus) and He said nothing. Then He was cut off from the living, He was buried with the wicked. He (Jesus) had done no violence nor was any deceit in His mouth. Verses 10-12-it was God’s will to crush Him (Jesus) and after all this suffering of His soul He will see life and be satisfied, by His righteous life He will justify many and bear their iniquities (II Corinthians 5:17-21). Chapter 54: Verses 5-8-(to the widows God said) “for your maker is your Husband, the Lord Almighty is His Name, the Holy One of Israel (God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit), is your Redeemer, it is He that is called the God of all the earth (John 3:16). Verse 10-though the mountain may be shaken and the hills be removed, My unfailing love for you will not be shaken, nor My covenant of peace be removed, for My compassion is on you. Verse 13-and all your sons will be taught by the Lord and great will be your children’s peace. Chapter 55: Verses 6-8-(God is always near you-forever-Revelation 22:3-6) so seek the Lord while He may be found, call on Him while He is near, let the wicked forsake his way and turn to the Lord, and the Lord will have mercy on them and God will freely pardon. Remember, My thoughts are not as yours, neither is my ways as yours. Verses 11-12-God said, “My Word that goes out from My mouth, it will not return to Me empty, it will accomplish what I desire, then you will go out in peace and joy.” Verse 13-this will be the Lord’s everlasting sign which will not be destroyed. Chapter 56: Verse 3-let no foreigners (gentiles in Romans 9:25; 15:10) who has bound themselves to the Lord say, “the Lord will surely exclude me from His people.” No, and let not any complain and say, “I am only a dry tree!” (John 15:1-5) Chapter 57: Verse 2-all those who walk uprightly in the Lord, they enter into My peace and they find rest as they lie in death (John 11:38-44; 5:28-29). Verses 17-21-I was enraged by your sin and I punished you and yet you kept on in your willful ways, but I will heal you, I will guide you and restore you and comfort you; but there is no peace for the wicked. Chapter 58: Verses 5-14-your fasting ends in quarreling and strife; is this the kind of fast I have chosen for you? No, it is this, to set the oppressed free and to share your food with the hungry, and give shelter and clothes to the naked. Do this and your light will light like the dawn and the glory of the Lord will rise in you, then you will find your joy in the Lord (II Timothy 1:8-10). Chapter 59: Verses 1-16-God sees no good in man, in our sin He has hidden His face from us, so He will not hear. It is His own arm working salvation for Him and His own righteousness sustaining Him. Verse 17-God put on righteousness as His breastplate and His helmet is His salvation on His head, He put on the garments of vengeance/truth (Ephesians 6:13-18). Verse 20-the Redeemer (Jesus) will come to Zion and us and to those who repent of their sins, the Lord declares this. Chapter 60: Verse 12-for the nation or kingdom that will not serve My people will perish! Verse 19-the sun will no more be your light by day, nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you, it will be the Lord, He will be your everlasting light (John 1:6-9). Chapter 61: Verses 1-4-the Spirit of the Lord is on me (Jesus) to preach good news (the Gospel of Jesus) and to bind up the brokenhearted and to release all from darkness. Chapter 62: Verse 10-God said to His people, “pass through the gates and prepare the way for the people. Build up the highway, raise a banner for all the nations.” God has said this to the ends of the earth, He said, “your Savior comes, they will be called the holy people.” (John 3:17) Chapter 63: Verses 10-14-yet Edom rebelled and grieved the Holy Spirit so He turned and became their enemy and He, Himself, fought them. Then God’s people recalled the days of old, Moses as coming through the sea, and they were given rest by the Spirit of the Lord; this is how He made for Himself a glorious Name. Chapter 64: Verses 4-5-since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any god besides You, who acts on behalf of those who wait for Him. It is you, O God, You come to the people to help them, yes those who gladly do good and right. Verse 8-O Lord, You are our father, we are the clay, You are the potter, all of us are the work of Your hand. Chapter 65: Verse 1-God said to Israel, “I revealed Myself to those who did not ask for Me; I was found by those who did not seek Me, to a nation that did not call on My Name I said, “here I am.” (Romans 10:20,21) He said to the gentiles, “whoever invokes a blessing in the land will do so by the God of Truth.” (John 4:22-24) Chapter 66: Verse 2-has not My hand made all things? When I said, they came into being. God said, “The one I esteem is he who is humbled, and is good in spirit and stays in My Word.” Verse 12-the Lord said, “I will extend peace to Jerusalem, like the wealth of all the nations. And the Lord says to all, “I will comfort you.” Verse 16-but with fire and with His sword the Lord will execute judgment upon all men. Verses 22-24-the new earth and the new heavens I will make endure before Me (II Peter 3:13) and so will your descendants; all mankind will come and bow down before Me and they will go out and look at the dead bodies of those who rebelled against Me; their worm will not die, nor will their fire be quenched, they will be loathsome to all mankind (Daniel 12:1-3). My comments: Isaiah brings his book to a close for the faithless there is a righteous judgment and for the faithful there is glorious reward. It would seem that everyone would want to be God’s followers. Make sure you are among those who will be richly blessed-Hebrews 10:5-10; Colossians 3:1-4; John 8:31-32; 14:5-7-I pray for you all, love Grandpa Reeve. Chapter 1: Verses 1-3-the word came to Jeremiah in the 13th year of Josiah, King of Judah. At this time the people of Jerusalem went into exile. Verses 4-9-before Jeremiah was born God appointed him a prophet to all the nations. Then God touched his mouth and said, “I have put My words in your mouth.” Verse 19-”Jeremiah, they will fight against you but will not overcome you for I am with you and will rescue you,” said the Lord. Chapter 2: Verses 5-8-the Lord said, “What fault did your fathers find in Me that they strayed so far from Me? They followed worthless idols and then they became worthless too. They did not ask, ‘where is the Lord?’ They all rebelled against Me.” Verse 19-the Lord said to the people of Israel by Jeremiah, “your wickedness will punish you and your backsliding will rebuke you, then consider and realize how evil and bitter this is for you.” Verses 25-28-My people said, “it is no use, I love foreign gods and I must go after them.” They say to wood, “you are my father, and to stone, you gave me birth,” and when you are in trouble you say, “come and save me,” but you have as many gods as you have towns. Chapter 3: Verses 12-17-”Jeremiah, go proclaim this message to the people in the north, ‘Israel you are faithless but I will frown on you no longer, for I am merciful, I will not be angry forever. Only do this, acknowledge your sin and guilt.’” God said to all Israel and Judah, “I am your husband.” Then you will say the Ark of the Covenant is no more. Verses 18-19-in those days the house of Judah will join the house of Israel and together they will come from a northern land to the land I gave to your forefathers. Verses 22-25-people return to Me, I will cure you! The people said, “Yes, for You are the Lord, in the Lord there is salvation. We have sinned against the Lord our God, bother we and our fathers.” (Matthew 3:3-6) Chapter 4: Verses 1-2-”if you, Israel, return to Me,” declares the Lord, “put your detestable idols out of My sight. And in a truthful, just and righteous way then promise ‘as surely as the Lord lives!’ I will forgive you, then the nations will be blessed.” Chapter 5: Verses 1-5-God said, “go and look around, see if there is one person doing good.” He said, “no not one!” They say, “As the Lord lives, and still swear falsely.” Lord You look for truth but there is none (John 4:24). Verses 24-31-they do not say to me or themselves, “let us fear the Lord our God, but what will You God do in the end?” Chapter 6: Verse 8-take this warning, O Jerusalem, or I will turn away from you. Verses 13-14-God said to Jeremiah, “from the least to the greatest, all greedy for gain, prophets and priests alike, all practice deceit. All people say peace, peace when there is no peace.” (Numbers 14:1-11) Verse 16-ask the Lord where the good way is and then walk in it and you will find rest for your souls (Hebrews 12:14). Chapter 7: Verses 9-13-”people of the world will steal and murder, commit adultery, and burn incense to Baal and follow other gods, will you stand before Me and say, ‘we are safe,’” the Lord said. “I have been watching all of you but you do not listen.” Verses 17-23-”do you not see what they are doing, they gather wood for their god and the fire, women make cakes for the queen of heaven and all this provokes Me to anger. They all are harming themselves to their own shame. When I brought your fathers out of Egypt, I did not just give them commands, but I gave them this command, ‘obey Me.’” Verse 34-I will one day bring an end to the sounds of joy and gladness; no more brides or bridegrooms (Revelation 22:12-14). Chapter 8: Verses 7-8-the stork in the sky knows her appointed seasons and the dove the swift and the thrush observe the time of their migration, but My people do not know the requirements of the Lord. The scribes are lying since rejecting the word. Chapter 9: Verse 3-My people make ready their tongues to shout lies; what they say is not the truth, they go from one sin to another and do not acknowledge Me. Verse 24-let all who boasts, boast about this, that he understands and knows about Me, that I am the Lord who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on all the earth, for in this I delight. Verses 25-26-men may be circumcised in flesh but not in their hearts (Acts 15:5-11-Peter’s truth). Chapter 10: Verses 3-11-the customs of the people is worthless, they cut down trees and a craftsman shapes it. They adorn is with silver and gold; they fasten to it with nails. They are idols, they cannot speak and they must carry it because it cannot walk. The idols can do no harm and they can do no good. Men are taught by wood, but no one is like you, O Lord, Your Name is mighty in power, the Lord is the true God. He is the living God and eternal King. Tell all men this, these gods who did nothing will perish from the earth; God made the earth by His power. Chapter 11: Verses 1-4-this is the word that the Lord gave to Jeremiah, He said, “listen to the terms of My covenant to all people. Cursed is the man who does not obey the terms of My covenant, it is the command of your fathers. If you do them you will be My people and I will be Your God.” (listen to the commands-Exodus 20:1-17) Chapter 12: Verses 1-4-the Lord is always righteous! Then why does the wicked prosper? And why do the faithless live at ease? You are always on their lips (saying God bless you), but far from their hearts, yet You know me, O Lord, you test my thoughts about You. Verses 6-10-answer to me is, your brothers and your own family have betrayed you, I will give the one I love into the hand of the enemies (Jesus). Many shepherds will ruin My vineyard and turn it into a desolate wasteland. Verse 17-”but if any nation or people does not listen to Me, I will completely uproot and destroy it,” says the Lord (Revelation 19:1-9). Chapter 13: Verse 10-these wicked people who refuse to listen to My words, who follow the stubbornness of their hearts and go after other gods to serve and worship them, will be like this belt, completely useless (verses 4-8; 23). Can you do good who do evil-NO. Chapter 14: Verses 1-6-a cry goes up from Jerusalem, there is no water, the farmers are dismayed for there is no grass. Verse 7-they say, “although our sins testify against us, O Lord, do something for the sake of Your Name, for it is our backsliding we have sinned against You.” Verses 13-15-Jeremiah said to the people, “believe not a lie from the false prophets, the Lord said, ‘I did not send them’” Verses 21-22-for the sake of Your Name, Lord, do not despise us; remember Your covenant with us. No worthless idols can bring rain, no it is You, O Lord, our God, it is You Who does all things (Matthew 7:21-23). Chapter 15: Verse 6-”you have rejected Me,” said the Lord, “you keep on backsliding, I can no longer show compassion.” Verses 19-20-this is what the Lord says, “if you repent I will restore you that you may serve Me, then I will fight for you and they will not overcome you, I am with you to rescue and save you.” Chapter 16: Verse 17-My eyes are on all their ways, they are not hidden from Me, nor is their sin concealed from My eyes. Verse 21-I will teach My people that I am Lord. Chapter 17: Verse 5-this is what the Lord says, “cursed is the one who trusts in man and who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the Lord.” (Romans 3:23) Verses 7-8-but blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream, it does not fear when heat comes, its leaves are always green, it has no worries in a year of drought, and it never fails to bear fruit (Ephesians 1:3-10; Galatians 6:3-4; Psalms 23:3-4). Verse 10-I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind to reward a man according to his conduct. Chapter 18: Verses 1-10-(the potter and the clay) The Lord said, “O house of Israel (and all men), can I not do with you as the potter does with the clay?” Chapter 19: Verses 6-7-then the Lord said to Jeremiah, “beware the days are coming when people will no longer call this terrible place what they do, but this place is the valley of slaughter.” Chapter 20: Verses 1-4-when a chief officer heard Jeremiah saying all these things he had him beaten and put in the stocks. The next day they released him. The Lord said, “I will make those who did this a terror to themselves (verses 7-12). Jeremiah complains! Verse 13-sing to the Lord, give Him praise for He rescues the life of the one in need of Him. Chapter 21: Verses 5-10-the Lord said, “I, Myself, will fight against the Babylonians in this city and I will hand the city to King Nebuchadnezzar, and he will destroy it with fire.” Chapter 22: Verses 8-9-people will ask, “why has the Lord done such a thing to the great city?” The answer is, “because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord their God and have served other gods.” Verse 21-God said, “I warned you when you felt secure, but you said, ‘I will not listen!’ This has been your way from your youth.” Chapter 23: Verse 16-this is what the Lord says, “do not listen to what the prophets are saying to you. They fill you with false hopes and they speak visions from their own minds, not from the Lord (I Corinthians 2:14-16). Verse 22-but if they had stood in my council they would have proclaimed My words to the people and would have turned them from evil. Verses 23-24-am I only a God nearby and far away? I fill heaven and earth! Verses 28-29-let the prophet who said, “I have a dream,” tell his dream, but let the one who has My Word speak it faithfully, for My Word is like fire (Hebrews 3:7-11). Chapter 24: Verse 7-I, the Lord, will give the people a heart to know Me, that I am the Lord. Chapter 25: Verses 4-6-Jeremiah said, “though the Lord has sent all His servants to you time and time again, you have not listened or paid any attention. But He said, ‘do not follow other gods, do not provoke Me to anger, then I will not ham you.’” Verses 15-30-these verses are the cup of God’s wrath. The Lord will roar from His holy dwelling, He will shout against all who live on the earth (Revelation 22:7). Chapter 26: Verses 1-15-the Lord came to King Jehoiakim and said, “stand in the courtyard of My house and say to all My people, omit nothing, so they will not do evil, say if you do not listen to Me and follow My law, and if you do not listen to My words I sent to you by My prophets, I will make this house of no use among all nations on earth.” Jeremiah told all that God said, but the people rebelled. Verse 24-a man named Ahikam supported Jeremiah and Jeremiah was not handed over to the people to be put to death. Chapter 27: Verses 4-5-God said to Zedekiah, King of Judah, “with My great power I made the earth and its people and the animals that are on it, and I will give it to anyone I please.” Verse 17-serve the King of Babylon and live! Chapter 28: Verses 2-6-the Lord said to Hananiah, “I will break the yoke of King Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon. I will bring back Jehoiachin, King of Judah, and all the other people who went to Babylon.” And they said, “Amen!” (Chapter 27:6-11) Verses 9-15-now the prophet who prophesies peace will be recognized as one truly sent by the Lord only if his predictions come true! The prophet Hananiah lied and God restored Jeremiah His prophet and Hananiah died. Chapter 29: Verses 10-13-this is what the Lord says, “in 70 years I will come to you and fulfill My promise to bring you back to your home. For I, the Lord, know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you hope and a future. Then you will pray and I will listen, you will seek Me and find Me, if you will do it with all your heart.” Verses 24-32-”Zephaniah the priest lies to Jeremiah,” says the Lord. Chapter 30: Verses 2-4-the Lord said to Jeremiah, “write all this in a book and the time is coming when I will bring all My people, Israel, to Judah. I will restore them to the land I gave to their forefathers.” Verses 7-11-and the Lord said, “this will be a time of trouble for you, but you will be saved.” (verse 24) Chapter 31: Verses 3-6-the Lord appeared to His people in the past saying, “I have loved you with an everlasting love and I will build you up again.” Verse 10-to all the nations: hear the Word of the Lord, He (God) who scattered Israel will gather them and watch over them like a shepherd (Revelation 7:4-10; 13-17-who are they? The 144,000 of Israel). Verse 34-no longer will a man teach his neighbor or his brother saying, “know the Lord,” because all will know Me, from the least to the greatest. For I will forgive their wickedness and remember their sins no more, Chapter 32: Verses 19-20-great, O God, are Your purposes and mighty are Your deeds, and Your eyes are open to all the ways of men. Verse 26-then the Word of the Lord came to Jeremiah and said, “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind.” Verse 37-I will gather My people from all the lands where I banish them in My anger and I will bring them back to this place and let them live in safety. Chapter 33: Verse 14-”the days are coming,” says the Lord, “when I will fulfill the promise I made to Israel and to Judah.” That’s when (Jesus) comes, the Lord our righteousness (Hebrews 7:1-18). Chapter 34: Verses 8-11-God said to Jeremiah, “free all the slaves in Jerusalem,” and they did. But they changed their minds and enslaved them again. Verses 16-17-the Lord said, “you have not obeyed Me so now you are free to die by the sword and famine.” Verse 21-so I will hand Zedekiah, King of Judah, and his officials over to their enemies (for they did all this evil). Chapter 35: Verses 5-6-the Lord said to the family of Recabite, “I give you wine to drink,” but they said, “no we cannot drink wine and we live in tents.” The command is in the book of Leviticus 10:8-10. Clean and unclean. I Cor. 11:26,27. Chapter 36: Verses 4-6-Jeremiah called Baruch to write all that he dictated, all the words the Lord spoke from the beginning at Josiah till now (Jeremiah 1:14) and read them to all the people. Verses 8-10-Baruch read it all from the scroll at the temple. Verse 23-when Jehudi read the scrolls to the king he threw them into the firepot. Verse 26-the king sent them to arrest Baruch and Jeremiah but the Lord had hidden them. Verse 28-then the Lord said to Jeremiah, “take another scroll and write on it all the words that were on the first scroll.” And the Lord said about the king, “you will have no successor.” Verse 32-so Jeremiah took a scroll and gave it to Baruch, and Jeremiah dictated it again. Chapter 37: Verses 14-20-Jeremiah was arrested and beaten and put in a cell in a dungeon for a long time. And then the king asked Jeremiah, “is there any word from the Lord?” Jeremiah said, “do not send me back to the house of Jonathan or I will die there.” Verse 21-so Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard! Chapter 38: Verses 2-9-Jeremiah said to the people all that the Lord said. He said, “don’t stay in this city or you will die. So go over to the Babylonians and live.” Then the officials said to the king, “this man, Jeremiah, should be put to death.” So the officials put him into a cistern. The cistern had not water in it. Verses 10-11-Edebmclech took 30 men and lifted Jeremiah out of the cistern before he would die. Verses 17-22-then Jeremiah said to the king, “if you surrender you will live but if you will not surrender, this city will be handed over to the Babylonians and they will burn it down.” And he said to the king, “obey God!” Chapter 39: Verses 1-8-the Babylonians captured Zedekiah and killed all the nobles of Judah and put out Zedekiah’s eyes and bound him and took him to Babylon. Verse 18-the Lord said to Jeremiah, “I will save you because you trust Me!” (Acts 15:7-8) Chapter 40: Verses 1-3-Jeremiah was found, bound in chains, among the captives from Jerusalem and Judah, when the commander of the guard found him. He said, “the Lord your God decreed this disaster for this place and the Lord brought it about. God has done just as He said. He did it because your people sinned against Him.” Chapter 41: Verses 16-18-after all was done the people and the army officers took flight to Egypt. Chapter 42: Verses 1-4-then all these went to Jeremiah and said to him, “please hear our petition and pray to the Lord for this entire remnant, for as you now see, though we were once many, now only a few are left. Pray that God will tell us where we should go and what we should do.” Jeremiah said, “I will pray for you.” Verse 6-the people said, “what God says we will do, whether good or bad.” Verse 11-the Lord said, “I am with you and I will save you and deliver you from the King of Babylon.” Chapter 43: Verses 1-3-the people did not believe Jeremiah in what God said. Verse 7-so the people entered Egypt when God said they should not go. Verse 10-Nebuchadnezzar will destroy Egypt and all in that place. Chapter 44: Verses 4-7-the Lord said, “again and again I sent My servants, the prophets, who said, ‘do not do this or that thing I hate,’ but they did not listen or pay attention (Matthew 5:1-12). They did not turn from their wickedness and going to other gods.” This is what God says, “why do you bring such great disaster on yourselves?” Verse 16-the people said to Jeremiah, “we will not listen to this message you have spoken from God.” Verse 19-they all wanted to burn incense to the queen of heaven instead. Verse 30-all you are going to Egypt and this is what God is going to do, “I am going to hand Pharaoh overt to his enemies just as I handed Zedekiah over to Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon.” Chapter 45: Verses 1-5-Jeremiah said to Baruch in the 14th year of the King of Judah, “woe to me, the Lord has added sorrow to my pain and I am worn out with groaning and I find no rest.” The Lord said to Baruch, “I will let you go.” Chapter 46: Verses 18-19-”as surely as I live,: declares the Lord, “one will come who is like Carmel by the sea and say pack your belongings for exile, for you who live in Egypt will be laid waste.” Verse 28-do not fear Jacob (Israel), you are My servant, I completely destroy all nations, but I will discipline you with justice (II Timothy 1:8-12-Amen!). Chapter 51: Verse 5-Israel and Judah have not been forsaken by their God although their land is full of Guilt before the Lord. Verses 7-9-Babylon was a gold cup in the Lord’s hand, the whole earth drunk from it, but they have now gone mad. We would have healed Babylon but she cannot be healed. Verses 61-64-God said, “read all this to Babylon.” Chapter 52: Verses 12-14-on May 13 of the year of Nebuchadnezzar, the King, his commander of the imperial guard, who served him, came to Jerusalem and he set fire to the temple of the Lord and Jerusalem. This was the fall of Jerusalem. Verse 29-in the 18th year of the King of Babylon, he took 832 people from Jerusalem, in the 23rd year 745 Jews taken into exile by the king. In all he took 4,600 people: From Judah 3,023 From Jerusalem 832 And Jews taken 745 _____ 4,600 (This book means funeral songs, by Jeremiah. He is grieving for Jerusalem) Chapter 1: Verses 5-7-(Jerusalem) her foes have become her masters and her enemies are at ease. The Lord has brought her grief because of her many sins. Her children have gone into exile, all the splendor has departed and in weakness they have fled. In the days of her affliction Jerusalem remembers all this. Verse 16-this is why I weep and my eyes overflow with tears. No one is near to comfort me, my children are destitute because the enemy has prevailed (Luke 19:41-Jesus wept for Jerusalem). Verse 18-the Lord is Righteous, yet Jacob (all of the Jews) rebelled against His commands. Listen all you people, look on my suffering, all my young men and women have gone into exile. Chapter 2: Verses 11-13-Jeremiah said, “the Lord and I are weeping, our heart is poured out on the ground because my people are destroyed and because children and infants faint in the streets of the city. They cry out to their mothers, ‘where is some bread,’ as they faint in the streets of the city. O Lord, restore us to Yourself and we will return to the days of old, unless You have utterly rejected us and are angry with us beyond measure. Remarks to this book-although God turned away from His people He did not abandon them. That was their great hope, despite their sin, God would and did return to them in the same way we to know that He will come back for us (verse 17 of chapter 5-John 3:19-21). ![]() |
