Chapter 1: Verses 1-27-the historical records from Adam to Abraham. Verses 28-52-family of Abraham.

Chapter 2: Verses 1-55-sons of Israel (Jacob): Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad and Asher.

Chapter 3: Verses 1-4-the sons of David-he reigned in Jerusalem 33 years-the children born to him there. Verses 10-16-Solomon’s sons in Judah.

Chapter 4: Verses 9-10-A man named Jabez was more honorable than all his brothers. Jabez cried out to God and God granted his request. Verses 26-27-Hammuel’s son, Shimei, had 16 sons and 6 daughters.

Chapter 5: Verses 1-3-Reuben, of Israel (Jacob), was the firstborn, but when he defiled his father’s marriage bed, his rights as firstborn were given to the sons of Joseph (Genesis 35:22).

Chapter 6: Verses 1-30-the sons of Levi and the descendants of Kohath. Verses 31-46-the men David put in charge of music. They ministered before the Tabernacle until Solomon built the temple in Jerusalem. These men served together with their sons. Verses 50-57-the descendants of Aaron. They were assigned to the work of Aaron as priests. Verse 71-The Gershonites received lands from the half tribe of Manasseh, Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, Zebulun, Reuben and Gad (they were a gift).

Chapter 7: Verses 1-5-the sons of Issachar-Michael, Obadiah, Joel-all these and Isaiah, all 5 of them were chiefs. Verses 6-12-3 sons of Benjamin. Verse 13-the sons of Naphtali. Verses 14-19-the sons of Manasseh. Verses 20-29-the sons of Ephraim. Verses 30-40-the sons of Asher.

Chapter 8: Verse 39-one of Benjamin’s heirs had many sons and grandsons, 150 in all.

Chapter 9: Verse 1-the people in Jerusalem and Judah were taken captive to Babylon because of their unfaithfulness. Verses 22-34-altogether, those who were chosen to be gatekeepers at the thresholds were 212. All these were heads of Levite families. Verses 35-39-the genealogy of Saul and Jonathan.

Chapter 10: Verses 4-6-Saul, King of Israel, takes his life by falling on his sword and he died with his 3 sons. Verses 14-God turned the kingdom over to David.

Chapter 11: Verse 19-all Israel came to David at Hebron and said, “David, we are your own flesh and blood, and God said to you, you will shepherd my people Israel (Psalm 23:1-6). David became more and more powerful because the Lord was with him. Verses 22-23-a valiant fighter named Benaiah, he like David, struck down an Egyptian who was 7 1/2 feet tall. He did it with a club (verses 26-47). The mighty men are listed.

Chapter 12: Verses 1-2-men who were joined to David, who could fight, right handed or left handed. Verse 18-the Spirit of God came upon Amasai and he said, “We are yours, David, for your God will help you.” Verses 22-23-day after day men came to help David until he had a great army. It was an army of God. Others joined David at Hebron (listed from verses 23-27). Verse 38-all the rest of the Israelites were also on in mind to make David king.

Chapter 13: Verses 4-5-the whole assembly of Israel agreed to bring the Ark of God back to them. Verse 14-the Ark went to Obededom’s house and remained there with his family for 3 months, and the Lord blessed his household and all he had.

Chapter 14: Verses 1-2-the King of Hiram sent people to help David build a palace for him. At this time David knew that the Lord had made him king. Verses 3-7-in Jerusalem he took more wives. The names of them are in the following verses. Verse 16-so David did all the Lord commanded him and they struck down the Philistine army from Gibeon to Gezzer.

Chapter 15: Verse 1-2-David prepared the place for the Ark of God. Verses 12-14-he said to the Levitical families, “You are to consecrate yourselves to the Ark of God and place it were I have prepared for it.” David said, “You did not do it right the first time.” Verse 22-Kenaniah, the head of the Levites, is to be responsible for the music.

Chapter 16: Verses 2-6-David blesses the people in the Name of the Lord and gave them bread and cake of raisins. Verses 7-36-David gives a Psalm (singing) of thanks to the Lord. Verse 41-give thanks to the Lord for His love endures forever.

Chapter 17: Verses 2-4-Nathan the prophet said to David, “Whatever you have in mind to do, do it, for God is with you.” Then the Lord came to Nathan and said, “Go and tell David, you are not the one to build me a house to dwell in.” Verses 5-11-God’s love for David is God’s promise. Verses 20-24-David said to God, “There is no one like you, and there is no God but You, and You have blessed your people Israel, and let it be forever.”

Chapter 18: Verses 1-12-David’s victories are written in the annals of time. The Lord gave David victory everywhere he went.

Chapter 19: Verses 1-4-in the course of time Nash, King of Ammonites, died, and his son succeeded him. David showed kindness in the death of the father, but the Ammonite nobles said to the king, “They are coming to spy out our country.” So the King of the Ammonites, Hanon, seized David’s men. Verse 19-after all was done the Syrians were not willing to help the Ammonites anymore. They made peace with David and became subject to him.

Chapter 20: Verses 1-2-David took the crown form the head of the King of the Ammonites. It weighed 75 pounds of Gold and had precious stones. David put it on his head. Verses 5-7-the brother of Goliath is killed, and in another battle there was a huge man. He had 6 fingers on each hand and 6 toes on each foot. When he fought in the war David’s brother killed him.

Chapter 21: Verses 5-8-Joab reports the number of fighting men to David. It is 1,100,000 men. Also, in Judah, there were 470,000. After this sin David said to God, “I have sinned greatly by doing this.” Verses 11-12-a man named Gad said to David, “God is giving you a choice of 3 things He can do, you take your choice-3 years of famine, 3 months of being swept away before enemies or 3 days of the sword of the Lord.” Verse 13-David said, “Let me fall into the hands of the Lord, for His mercy is very good, but do not let me fall into the hands of man.” Verse 16-then David saw the angel of the Lord standing between heaven and earth with a sword in his hand over Jerusalem. Then David said to God, “It was my sin, I ordered the fighting men to be counted, don’t blame these sheep-God’s people.”

Chapter 22: Verses 1-4-David said, “The house that Moses built for the Lord, it is to be here, so we must prepare the temple needs.” Verses 5-6-”My son Solomon is young, therefore I will make preparations for the temple.” Then David called for his son and charged him to build a house for the Lord, the God of Israel. Verses 8-9-David could not build it for he had shed blood and fought many wars. Solomon is a man of peace. Verse 10-he will be my son, and I will be His Father. Verses 15-16-the Lord said, “I will give you many workmen to do the work, men skilled in every kind of work.” Verse 19-now all Israel devote your heart and soul to seeking the Lord your God, now begin to build this sanctuary.

Chapter 23: Verses 1-6-when David was old he made his son Solomon King over Israel. He also numbered the Levites, thirty years old and above. The number of them was 38,000. 24,000 supervise the work of the temple, 6,000 are to be officials and judges, 4,000 gatekeepers, and 4,000 on musical instruments. Verses 13-30-Aaron, Moses brother, was set apart, he and his descendants, forever to consecrate the most holy things. The sons of Moses were counted as part of the tribe of Levi. The Levites, 20 years old, were in charge of the bread set out on the table. They also are to praise the Lord every morning.

Chapter 24: Verses 1-2-the divisions of Aaron’s sons-2 of them died before their father did and they had no sons. There names were Nabad and Abihu (Leviticus 10:1-2). Verse 11-the 9th one recorded of the officials was Joshua (Joshua 1:1-11).

Chapter 25: Verse 5-the sons of Heman were 14 and 3 daughters, all under the supervision of their father for the music of the temple of the Lord. Heman was under the supervision of the king, David.

Chapter 26: Verses 4-9-Obed Edom had workers-62 in all-and God had blessed Obed Edom. Verses 14-15-he also had the south gate of the city to his responsibility and the lot for the storehouses fell to his sons.

Chapter 27: Verses 1-15-the army of the Israelites who served the king were on duty throughout the year. Each division consisted of 24,000 men who served each month. In all who served were 288,000 men.

Chapter 28: Verse 1-David summoned all the officials of Israel to assemble at Jerusalem. They were the officers over the tribes, the commanders of the 12 divisions. Verses 2-10-King David said to all of the people, “I had in heart to build a house for a place to put the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord, but God said not me. He chose my son Solomon to do it.” Verses 11-19-so David gave his son Solomon the plans for the temple-all this David gave his son.

Chapter 29: Verses 1-5-David said to the assembly, “My son, Solomon, God’s young chosen one is inexperienced. The task for him is great. This structure is not for man but for God. I have provided for this temple all that is needed, and my devotion to it, and now I will give my personal treasurers also.” Verses 8-9-any who had precious stones gave them to the temple. They willingly responded with wholeheartedness. All the people and David the King rejoiced greatly. Verses 10-13-David’s prayer, “O, Lord, you have been the Father of all Israel forever. Yours, O Lord, is the kingdom (Matthew 6:9-10) and now, our God, we give you thanks and praise your glorious name.” Verses 14-17-”We give what you give us, for all this abundance that we have comes from your hand, and all of this we give back to you.” Verse 18-”O, Lord, keep the hearts of your people loyal to you (Romans 9:25-26). Verse 19-”And give my son Solomon devotion to keep you commands.” Verse 20-David said to the whole assembly, “Praise the Lord so they all praised the Lord, the God of their fathers (and so should we). Verses 22-23-then they acknowledged Solomon as king. Verses 25-26-the people bestowed on Solomon royal splendor such as no king before him. David, his father, ruled 40 years-7 in Hebron and 33 in Jerusalem.


II CHRONICLES/

Chapter 1: Verses 7-12-God appeared to Solomon and said, “Ask whatever you want me to give you.” Solomon said, “You have made me king over a people who are so numerous-give me wisdom that I may lead this people.”

Chapter 2: Verses 1-4-Solomon builds the temple. Verses 5-6-”The temple I am going to build will be great because God is greater than all. But who is able to build a temple for him since the heavens cannot contain Him?”

Chapter 3: Verses 1-2-Solomon began to build the temple on Mount Moriah. This is the place provided by David, his father. He began building 4 years after he became king (I Chronicles 23:1-6). Verses 3-17-how Solomon built the temple.

Chapter 4: Verses 1-22-and all the furnishings-he made all these things that Solomon made amounted to so much that the weight was not determined.

Chapter 5: Verses 7-8-the Levite priests then brought the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant to its place in the inner sanctuary of the temple-and they put it beneath the wings of the Cherubim. Verses 10-13-in the ark at this time was the 2 tablets that Moses had after they came out of Egypt. And all the people said, “God’s love endures forever.”

Chapter 6: Verses 8-9-God said to David, “You did well to have in your heart to build a temple for my name, but not you, your son will build it.” Verse 10-and Solomon said, “I have succeeded my father David, and now I sit on the throne of Israel just as the Lord promised. The temple is built!” Verse 30-”Lord hear the afflictions of your people from heaven, Your dwelling place, and deal with each one according to all they do since you know the heart of all people.” Psalm 139:7-18. Verses 32-33-Solomon said to God, “As for the foreigner who don’t belong to the people Israel, hear from heaven, do as they ask so that all the people of the earth may know your name and fear you” (Romans 9:25; Hosea 2:23; II Chronicles 7:14). Verses 38-39-”If all the people turn back to you with all their heart and soul and pray, then hear and forgive.” Verses 40-42-Solomon prays, “May all the saints rejoice.”

Chapter 7: Verses 2-4-the priests could not enter the temple of the Lord because the glory of the Lord filled all that place, and the people worshipped and gave thanks to God, saying, “His love endures forever.” Verse 5-so the king and all the people dedicated the temple. Verses 11-14-the Lord came to Solomon and said, “I have heard your prayer, but when I shut up the heavens, or command locusts, or send a plague, if I do this and then, if my people who are called by My Name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn away from their wicked ways, I will hear you from heaven and will forgive your sin and heal your land.” (all people of God-Romans 9:25)

Chapter 8: Verse 6-whatever Solomon desired to build in Jerusalem and in Lebanon and throughout all the territory he ruled, he built. Verse 11-Solomon made Pharaoh’s daughter become his wife.

Chapter 9: Verses 1-6-the Queen of Sheba heard of Solomon’s fame all over the world and came to Jerusalem to test his wisdom. She talked to him about what was in her mind. She was overwhelmed with what she saw. Verses 5-8-she said to the king, “All I heard in my country is true, I did not believe it until I came and saw with my own eyes. How happy your people must be with you. Praise the Lord for you.” Verse 20-nothing was made of silver in Solomon’s day because silver was considered of little value. Verse 22-King Solomon was greater in riches and wisdom than all the kings on earth. The kings sought audience with Solomon to hear the wisdom God had put in his heart, year after year. Verse 30-Solomon reigned in Jerusalem 40 years. His son Rehoboam succeeded his father Solomon.

Chapter 10: Verse 11-Rehoboam said to all the people, “My father laid on you a heavy yoke, I will make it even heavier.” The king did not listen to Jeroboam or the people. Verse 19-all Israel went into rebellion against the house of David because of Rehoboam.

Chapter 11: Verses 21-22-Rehoboam had 18 wives and 60 concubines who bore him 28 sons and 60 daughters, but he loved Maacah more than all of them. Maacah was the daughter of Absalom. He appointed Abijah, Maacah’s son, to be chief prince in order to make him king.

Chapter 12: Verse 1-after Rehoboam established himself as king he and all Israel abandoned the law of the Lord. Verses 5-8-the prophet Shemaiah came to Rehoboam and said to him, “You have abandoned Me, so now I abandon you (Matthew 6:14-15), but if you humble yourselves I will not destroy you-I will deliver you (and He did).” Verses 13-16-Rehoboam was 41 years old when he became king and reigned 17 years in Jerusalem, and he died, and Abijah succeeded him as king.

Chapter 13: Verses 3-7-there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam who was an official of Solomon. He rebelled against God and the king. Verse 18-the men of Israel were beaten and the men of Judah were victorious because they relied on the Lord, the God of thief fathers.

Chapter 14: Verses 1-6-Abijah had 14 wives who bore him 22 sons and 16 daughters. His son Asa succeeded him as king. Asa as king was at peace for 10 years. He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and he commanded all of Judah to seek the Lord and to obey His laws. Verses 11-15-Asa said, “Lord there is no on like you, so help us against our enemies.” And the Lord did.

Chapter 15: Verses 1-2-the Spirit of God came upon Azariah, son of Obed, and he said, “The Lord is with you when you with Him, if you seek Him you will find Him. But if you forsake Him, He will forsake you.” Verse 8-when the prophet said all this they turned to God. Verse 12-they entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul. Then the Lord gave them rest on every side. Verse 17-Asa’s heart was fully committed to the Lord (Matthew 11:28-30).

Chapter 16: Verses 7-9-a seer named Hanani came to Asa, King of Judah, and son of Abijah, and said to him, “Because you relied on someone other than God, when you relied on the Lord He delivered you from the enemy.” The seer said, “The eyes of the Lord are to strengthen those who hear Him, so you will be at war.” Verses 10-14-in the 59th year Asa was afflicted in his feet with a disease. Even in his illness he did not seek the Lord. Then in his 41st year he died.

Chapter 17: Verses 1-6-Jehoshaphat, son of Asa, succeeded him as king. The Lord established the kingdom under his control. His heart was devoted to the Lord. Verses 9-11-many were sent to teach in Judah. They took the book of the law of the Lord. Some Philistines brought gifts to the king.

Chapter 18: Verses 1-14-Jehoshaphat allied himself with Ahab by marriage. Ahab was King of Israel, Jehoshaphat was king of Judah. They are to seek the counsel of the Lord, so they asked the prophets, “Shall we go to war against Ramoth Gilead?” The prophets said, “Yes, go.” They went to Micaiah and he said, “The Lord will give them into your hand.” Verse 23-Zedekiah went up to Micaiah and slapped him in the face. Verse 34-King Ahab died in battle.

Chapter 19: Verses 6-8-Jehoshaphat appointed judges in Judah and said to them, “Be careful what you do, you are not judging for man but for the Lord. So let the fear of the Lord be upon you, judge carefully.” He also said, “In Jerusalem He appointed priests to settle disputes.”

Chapter 20: Verses 5-12-Jehoshaphat prays for help from God against a vast army of Moabites, Ammonites and Ammonites who came to make war on them. Verses 15-17-the answer from God, “Do not be afraid because the battle is not yours but Gods.” Verses 21-27-all the people of Judah and Jerusalem went into battle singing and said, “Give thanks to the Lord for His love endures forever.”

Chapter 21: Verses 1-2-Jehoshaphat died! He was 35 years old when he became King of Judah and he reigned 25 years in Jerusalem. All the days he walked in the ways of his father Asa. He was buried in the city of David and his son Jehoram succeeded him. Verses 4-11-Jehoram did evil in the eyes of the Lord. He was 22 years old when he became king. He put all his brothers to death. He reigned 8 years in Jerusalem. Verses 12-14-Jehoram received a letter from Elijah the prophet. He said, “You have not walked in the ways of your father so now the Lord will strike your people, your sons and everything that is yours, and you will be very ill.” Verses 17-20-not a son was left except Ahaziah, the youngest, and Jehoram died of his disease.

Chapter 22: Verses 1-5-the people of Jerusalem made Ahaziah king. He, too, was 22 years old at that time and his mother encouraged him to do wrong. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord. He was hiding in Samaria. He was brought back and put to death. Verse 10-then his mother saw he was dead. Then she destroyed the whole royal family of the house of Judah. Verse 11-only Joash survived because he was stole away with his nurse. He remained hidden for 6 years while Athaliah ruled the land.

Chapter 23: Verse 3-Jehoiada said to the assembly, “The king’s son shall reign as the Lord promised concerning the descendants of David (Matthew 1:17). Verses 8-11-Jehoiada being the priest said, “All the men with weapons in his hands guard the king.”

Chapter 24: Verse 4-Joash decided to restore the temple of the Lord. Verses 8-10-the king commanded a chest be made and placed outside the gate of the temple. He said to the people, “Bring your tax to the chest.” They gladly dropped their contributions in the chest. Verses 11-13-when the chest was brought in there was always a large amount of money. Verses 15-16-Jehoiada served God well and he and the king with all the people restored the temple and then some. The priest was old with many years and he died at the age of 120 years. He was buried in the city of David because of the good he had done. Verses 25-27-Joash the King was wounded and his officials conspired against him and they killed him in his bed. The recording of the restoration of the temple of God are written in the annotations of the book of the Kings. Amaziah, his son, succeeded him as king. He was 25years old when he became king and his reign was in Jerusalem.

Chapter 25: Verses 3-4-after King Amaziah was firmly in control he executed the men who murdered his father who was king. He did not kill their sons but acted in accordance with what the Lord had written in the law (Deuteronomy 24:16-fathers shall not be put to death for their children and children for their fathers sins). Verses 20-24-Amaziah would not listen to God so Jehoash, King of Israel and Amaziah King of Judah faced each other in battle. Verse 25-Amaziah lived for 15 years and turned away from following the Lord. Some men met him in Lechish and killed him. He was brought back to Judah and buried there.

Chapter 26: Verses 1-5-Uzziah, Amaziah’s son, was made king at the age of 16 years. He sought God. As long as he sought the Lord, God gave him success. Verses 16-20-but after he became powerful, his pride led to his downfall. In the temple leprosy broke out on his forehead. He was put away at that time.

Chapter 27: Verses 1-5-Jotham was 25 years old when he became king and he reigned 16 years in Jerusalem. He rebuilt the upper gate of the temple and did extensive work on the wall and he built towns in the hills of Judah. Verse 6-he grew powerful because he loved God.

Chapter 28: Verses 1-2-Ahaz, son of Jotham, became king at 20 years old. He made idols to Baal and did not do right in the Lord’s eyes. Verses 22-25-King Ahaz became more unfaithful to the Lord. He built high places to burn sacrifices to other gods instead of the God of Israel.

Chapter 29: Verses 1-3-Hezekiah, Ahaz’s son, became king at 25 years old and he reigned 29 years in Jerusalem and he did what was right in the Lord’s eyes. In the first month of the first year he opened the doors of the temple and repaired them (II Chronicles 28:24). His father had shut the doors. Verses 18-19-the Levite priests went in to the king and reported, “We have purified the entire temple, we have consecrated all of it.” Verse 29-when all this was finished the king and everyone with him knelt down and worshipped (John 4:24). Verse 36-Hezekiah and all the people rejoiced at what God had done so quickly.

Chapter 30: Verses 8-9-”Do not be stiff necked,” said the king, “As your fathers where. Serve the Lord so that His fierce anger will turn away from you. He will love you if you return to Him.” Verses 15-20-so they all came to the Passover on the 14th day of the 2nd month, in Jerusalem at the temple.

Chapter 31: Verses 1-19-all the contributions for worship were assigned to the Levite priests. Verses 20-21-this is what Hezekiah did throughout Judah in obedience to the law of Moses.

Chapter 32: Verses 3-4-Hezekiah consulted with his officials to block the water from all the springs outside the city. He said, “Why should the Assyrians come in battle against us and find water in the cities?” Verses 7-8-then he said to all the people, “Be strong and courageous, for there is a greater power with us than with them (God). Verse 22-so the Lord saved Hezekiah and all the people of Jerusalem from the King of Assyria and all that came to invade Judah and Jerusalem. Verse 26-Hezekiah sinned against God, but he also repented of his pride. Verse 33-Hezekiah in his death was buried on the hill where the tombs of David’s descendants are and Manasseh, his son, succeeded him as king.

Chapter 33: Verses 1-2-Manasseh was 12 years old when he became king and reigned 55 years in Jerusalem. He did evil in the eyes of God. Verses 3-4-he erected altars to Baal. He built the altars in the temple of the Lord. Verse 6-he also sacrificed his sons in the fire. He did much evil provoking God’s anger. Verse 21-Amon, son of Manasseh, was 22 years old when becoming king. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord.

Chapter 34: Verses 1-7-Josiah, Amon’s son, was 8 years old when he became king in Jerusalem and did what was right in the Lord’s eyes. In the first 8 years of his reign, while still young, he began to seek God and in the 20th year he purged Judah and Jerusalem. Verses 14-19-while working on the temple they found the books of the law of the Lord that came to Moses. When they read the book to the king he tore his robes. Verses 28-33-the Lord God of Israel said to Josiah, “I will give you peace before I bring disaster to this place.” So he served the Lord as long as he lived.

Chapter 35: Verses 18-19-the Passover had not been observed like this since the days of Samuel. No one celebrated it like Josiah did. He did it in his 18th year as king. Verse 23-archers shot Josiah the king. So they took him to Jerusalem where he died and all the people mourned for him.

Chapter 36: Verses 5-8-Jehoahaz, his son, is made king at 23 years of age. But the King of Egypt dethroned him in Jerusalem and made Eliakim, his brother, king. They changed his name to Jehoiakim. He was 25 years old when becoming king and he reigned 11 years and did evil in the Lord’s eyes. Verses 9-23-two more kings followed him, Jehoiachin and Zedekiah, then the fall of Jerusalem came. Verses 15-23-all the kings did evil in the eyes of the Lord. The people mocked God’s messengers. It was the fall of Jerusalem.


EZRA

Chapter 1: Verses 1-4-the King of Persia, Cyrus, fulfills the word of the Lord, spoken by Jeremiah, to build a temple for the Lord at Jerusalem in Judah. Verse 7-he also brought the articles that King Nebuchadnezzar had carried away and placed in the temple of his gods (Jeremiah 27:8-16).

Chapter 2: Verses 1-35-the list of the exiled who returned and who Nebuchadnezzar had taken captive to Babylon. Verses 36-42-and all the Levite priests. Verses 43-57-the temple servants. Verses 62-63-these all searched for their family records but they could not find them so these priest were excluded from the priesthood.

Chapter 3: Verse 3-despite the fear of the people around them they built the altar for the burnt sacrifice (Romans 1:14-17). Verses 11-13-with praise and thanksgiving all the people sang this to the Lord God of Israel, “He is good, His love endures forever (Psalm 136:1-26),”
Chapter 4: Verses 6-10-the letter to Ahasuerus to stop the building in Jerusalem. Verses 11-16-this is a copy of the letter from them to King Ahasuerus Verses 17-22-the king’s reply. Verse 23-as soon as the copy was read they went immediately to compel by force to stop them.

Chapter 5: Verses 7-12-the report sent to King Darius, “The people are building the walls with large stones, making great progress.” Then they asked, “Who authorized you to do this at the temple?” They answered, “We are the servants of the God of Heaven and earth.” Verses 15-16-King Cyrus said, “Take these articles and deposit them in the temple, the ones Nebuchadnezzar had taken and brought to the temple in Babylon.”

Chapter 6: Verses 3-5-this is Cyrus memorandum, in the first year of his reign he issued a decree concerning the temple of God, “The cost of this is to come from the royal treasury.” Verses 14-15-this was being done in the time of the Prophet Haggai. The temple was completed on the 6th year of King Darius. Verses 19-22-then they celebrated the Passover.

Chapter 7: Verses 1-6-Ezra came to Jerusalem-he was from the lineage of Aaron-he was a teacher well versed in the Law of Moses. Verses 9-10-Ezra came from Babylon to Jerusalem. It took him 5 months to get there. Verses 21-23-King Artaxerxes ordered all treasurers to provide for the priest, Ezra, up to 100 talents of silver (this is 3 1/2 tons) and a lot more. Verse 25-and the king said to Ezra, “With the wisdom you possess appoint magistrates and judges to the people of Trans Euphrates.”

Chapter 8: Verses 1-14-Ezra’s family who came up with him from Babylon during the reign of King Artaxerxes. Verse 21-a feast was proclaimed so they might humble themselves before God and ask Him for a safe journey for us and our children. Verse 23-so we fasted and petitioned God and God answered our prayers.

Chapter 9: Verses 2-5-the leaders and officials have led the way of unfaithfulness with the people of Israel. They have taken some of the foreign daughters as their wives. Ezra, with his hands spread out to the Lord, prayed. Verses 6-15-Ezra said to God, “You said, do not give your daughters in marriage to the Cannanites, Hittites, Perizzites and all the rest of God’s enemies.”

Chapter 10: Verses 10-15-then Ezra stood up and said to the people, “You have been unfaithful, you have married foreign women.” And he said, “Separate yourselves from your foreign wives.” One Levite named Shabbethai opposed it. Verses 18-44-those guilty wanted to relieve the fierce anger of God in this matter. Those among the descendants of the priests who married foreign women (Exodus 23:32-33).


NEHEMIAH

Chapter 1: Verses 4-11-Nehemiah’s prayer before God, he said, “O, Lord, God of heaven, great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant of love with those who love God and obey His commands.”

Chapter 2: Verses 1-10-Artaxerxes sends Nehemiah to Jerusalem to rebuild the city of Judah. It pleased the king to send him. Nehemiah set a time it would take. Sanballat and others were disturbed that someone had come to promote Israel. Verses 11-18-Nehemiah inspects the walls of Jerusalem. “The officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing. I didn’t even tell the Jews or the priests.” After inspecting it all they said, “Let us start rebuilding.” So they began the work. Verses 19-20-Sanballat and others ridiculed Nehemiah for doing this. He answered them by saying, “The God of heaven will give us success.”

Chapter 3: Verses 1-13-the building sections of the towers and the gate were the wall of Jerusalem and the people that did it. The wall in one place was 500 yards.

Chapter 4: Verses 1-2-at this time Sanballat became angry and said, “Can they bring the stones of the wall back to life from the heaps of rubble?” Verse 6-but they rebuilt the wall till all of it reached half its height. The people worked with all their heart. Verses 14-15-after Nehemiah looked things over he said, “Don’t be afraid, the Lord is for us.” Then we all returned to work.

Chapter 5: Verses 1-15-the people were crying out for help. Nehemiah got back their trust.

Chapter 6: Verses 1-3-after the wall was rebuilt, Sanballat sent a message to Nehemiah, “Let us meet together.” But they were scheming to harm him. He said, “No.” Verses 15-16-so the wall was completed in 52 days with the help of God.

Chapter 7: Verses 4-7-here is the list of the exiles who returned to Jerusalem. Before this there were few people there. So God put in my heart to assemble nobles and these are the people to do it. Verses 8-63-the list of the men of Israel.

Chapter 8: Verses 1-6-when all the men of Israel came together they told Ezra to bring out and read the book of the law God gave to Moses. So on the day 7/1 Ezra stood on a wooden platform, on his right and left beside him were men of the descendants of Israel. Ezra praised the Lord and all the people lifted their hands and said, “Amen! Amen!” And they all bowed down and worshipped the Lord. Verses 8-17-the book was read and made clear, giving the meaning so that the people could understand. All the people were weeping as the book was read. Nehemiah said, “The joy of the Lord is your strength (Psalm 85:4-6).”

Chapter 9: Verses 2-3-the Israelites stood in the places and confessed their sins and the sins of their fathers. They read the book of the law for 6 hours and spent 6 hours in confession and worshipping the Lord their God (John 4:24). Verses 5-38-they stood up and praised God -You made the heavens and all the stars. -You made the earth and all that is on it. -You made the seas and all that is in them. -You chose Abram and named Him Abraham. He was faithful to you. -You saw your peoples suffering in Egypt and opened the Red Sea. -by day You led them with a cloud and at night by fire to give them light. -You gave them the laws and they are just. You did this through Moses. -in their hunger You gave them bread from heaven and water from a rock. -but Your people refused to listen to you. -but You are a forgiving God abounding in love. -for 40 years You kept them in the desert and their clothes did not wear out. -You made their sons as numerous as the stars. -in all that has happened to us You have been just, but now we are slaves in the land you gave us because of our sins.

Chapter 10: Verses 1-28-they now were making an agreement with God, these are the ones who sealed it. Verse 31-every 7th year we will forgo working the land and will cancel all debts. Verses 34-39-they are all to tithe and not to neglect the house of God.

Chapter 11: Verses 1-4-the residents of Jerusalem, the leaders of the people, settled in that city and cast lots to bring 1 out of every 10 to live their also. While the remaining 9 were to stay in their own towns,

Chapter 12: Verse 27-at the dedication of the wall the Levites were sought out from where they lived to celebrate the dedication joyfully. Verses 40-43-they all gave thanks to God and took their places in the house of God-so did Nehemiah-and God gave them great joy. The sound of that joy could be heard far away.

Chapter 13: Verse 1-on the day the book that Moses said, “The Ammonite and Moabite should not be admitted into the assembly of God because they did not give food and water to the Israelites and they called a curse on them. However, God turned the curse into a blessing (Deuteronomy 23:3-5).” Verses 25-26-the people of Judah’s daughters married the sons of the foreigners and Nehemiah said, “Was it not because of this that Solomon sinned?”

ESTHER

Chapter 1: Verses 1-8-King Ahasuerus reigned over all Shushan and he gave a banquet for all his nobles. After this, 7 days later, he gave all the people from the least to the greatest a banquet in his garden. Verses 9-22-his queen, Vashti, also had a banquet. At that time she was invited to the king’s banquet and she said, “No.” King Ahasuerus became furious. Queen Vashti was deposed.

Chapter 2: Verses 4-9-Esther replaced Queen Vashti. Esther did not have a father or mother, she was adopted when her parents died by Mordecai. Verses 15-17-Esther won the favor of everyone who saw her when the king received her. Verses 19-23-Mordecai was sitting at the king’s gate and uncovered a conspiracy.

Chapter 3: Verses 1-6-Esther was born a Jew. The king honored a man named Haman but Mordecai would not kneel to him. Haman was enraged. Knowing Mordecai was a Jew he plotted against him.

Chapter 4: Verses 7-8-Mordecai tells everything that was happening to Hathach who Esther sent to Mordecai. Mordecai urged Esther to go to King Ahasuerus and explain so he would show mercy. Verse 15-Esther calls for a 3 day fast of all the Israelite people of Susa. Mordecai did it.

Chapter 5: Verse 14-Haman builds a gallows 17 feet high for Mordecai to be hanged on.

Chapter 6: Verses 2-3-Mordecai exposes Bigthana and Teresh, 2 of the king’s officers who conspired to assassinate King Ahasuerus. The king asked, “What recognition has he received?” Verses 6-9-Haman was asked by the kind what should be done for such a man. Haman thought he was planning all this for him.

Chapter 7: Verses 4-10-Esther and the king spoke and Esther said, “Spare my people, the Jews.” The king said, “Who is doing all this?” She said, “Haman.” The king said, “Hang Haman on the gallows standing by his house.”

Chapter 8: Verses 1-7-Esther and Mordecai saved the Jews and they both were restored in the king’s eyes. Verses 8-10-they were told to write another decree in the king’s name on behalf of the Jews and seal it with the king’s signet ring. Verses 12-13-the day appointed for this to be done was 12/13, the month of Adar (this was the day set by Haman). Verses 16-17-for the Jews this was a time of happiness and joy and many people of other nationalities became Jews because fear of the Jews had seized them (Job 28:27-28),

Chapter 9: Verse 14-the 10 sons of Haman were hanged. Verse 17-and all the things that happened there happened on Adar the 12 month and the 13th day in the Jews time (we should be patient with all people to help them be what they can be-John 13:34). Verses 26-28-the days following Haman would become the day of Purim. These days should be remembered and observed in every generation and in every city. These days of Purim should never cease to be celebrated by the Jews. Verse 30-so Mordecai sent letters to all the Jews in the 127 provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus.

Chapter 10: Verses 1-2-the king imposed tribute throughout the empire. Acts of power and might together with a full account of the greatness of Mordecai to which the king had raised him. This is all written in the book of the annals of the kings of Media and Persia. Verse 3-Mordecai, the Jew, was second in rank to King Ahasuerus, and held in high esteem by all the Jew’s, because he and Esther worked for good of the Jewish people and for their welfare (this is like Joseph and his brothers. He was 2nd in Egypt to Pharaoh, Genesis 50:19).

JOB

Chapter 1: Verses 1-2-in the land of Uz Job lived and he had 7 sons and 3 daughters. He also had 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 oxen and 500 donkeys. He had a large number of servants. Verse 5-Job would purify his children early in the morning. This was Job’s regular custom. Verse 8-the Lord said to Satan about Job, “There is no one on earth like him.” Verses 14-19-Job was told that all he had was gone. Verse 21-Job said, “The Lord gave and the Lord takes away, but may the Name of the Lord be praised.”

Chapter 2: Verse 3-the Lord said to Satan, “Consider my servant Job. There is no one on earth like him.” God said, “He fears Me and shuns evil.” Verses 9-10-Job’s wife said to him, “Curse God and die!” He replied to her, “Shall we accept good from God and not trouble?” (Romans 1:16-20) In all this Job did not sin in what he said. Verses 11-13-Job’s 3 friends come to him and sat with him for 7 days and 7 nights. No one said a word.

Chapter 3: Verses 1-26-Job was hurting and he said, “Why?” But he did not blame God.

Chapter 4: Verses 1-4-Eliphaz reminds Job all the good he did for others. Verse 17-then he said, “Can a mortal be more righteous then God, (Colossians 3:1-4). Good people will be in glory.

Chapter 5: Verses 6-7-”Hardship does not spring from the soil, nor does trouble come from the ground, yet man is born to trouble as surely as sparks fly upward,” said Job. Verses 17-18-blessed is the man whom God corrects so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty God (Hebrews 4:1-13). For He wounds and He injures us, but God also heals.

Chapter 6: Verse 14-Job said to his friends, “A despairing man should have the devotion of his friends.” Verse 22-he said to his friends, “Have I ever said to you give me something?”

Chapter 7: Verses 17-18-Job asked god, “What is man that you make so much of him, that give him so much attention? You examine us every morning and test us every moment.” (Romans 5:9-11)

Chapter 8: Verses 1-6-Bildad, his friend, said, “When your children sinned against God He gave them over to the penalty of their sin.” (Bildad’s judgment)

Chapter 9: Verses 1-3-Job replied to Bildad, “I know that what you say in true, but how can a mortal be righteous before God?” Verses 4-32-God’s wisdom is profound and His power is vast in what He does. Verses 33-35-”If only there were someone to arbitrate between God and man, someone to remove God’s rod from me.” (II Corinthians 6:1-2-it is Jesus).

Chapter 10: Verse 2-Job said to God, “Do not condemn me, but tell me what charges you have against me.” Verse 7-”You know that I am not guilty and that no one can rescue me from your hand.”

Chapter 11: Verses 4-5-Zophar said to Job, “You say to God, ‘my beliefs are flawless and I am pure in your sight,’ but Job I wish that God would speak the he would open His lips against you.”

Chapter 12: Verses 7-10-Job said to Zophar, “Ask the animals or the birds of the air or speak to the earth or let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done it all. In His hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.” Verses 12-25-”Is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long life bring understanding? It all belongs to God, not man.”

Chapter 13: Verses 1-3-Job continues, “My eyes have seen all this, but I desire to speak to the Lord Almighty and to argue my case with God.” (Hebrews 1:1-6) Verse 5-”If you would be silent, what would be wisdom?” Verse 15-Job said, “If God would slay me, yet I will hope in Him.”

Chapter 14: Verses 14-16-”If a man dies will he live again? You will call and I will answer you, but you will not keep track of my sin.” (Genesis 6:5-6)

Chapter 15: Verses 6-9-Eliphaz said to Job, “Your own mouth condemns you. What do you know that we do not know?”

Chapter 16: Verse 2-Job replied, “Miserable comforters are you all.” Verse 21-”On behalf of man I plead with God as a man pleads for his friend.”

Chapter 17: Verses 9-10-”Nevertheless, the righteous will hold to their ways and those with clean hands will grow stronger. But I will not find a wise man among you.”

Chapter 18: Verses 12-21-Bildad said to Job, “Calamity is hungry for you, disaster is ready for you when you fall, surely such is the dwelling of an evil man.”

Chapter 19: Verse 1-Job replied, “How long will you torment me and crush me with words?” Verses 20-21-”I am nothing but skin and bones, I have escaped with only the skin of my teeth. Have pity on me my friends for the hand of God has struck me. Why do you pursue me as God does?” Verses 23-27-”Oh, that my words were recorded, for I know that my Redeemer (Jesus-God) lives and He will stand upon the earth and in my flesh I will see God.”

Chapter 20: Verses 1-7-then Zophar replied, “A man will perish forever, like his own dung (bawls). Then man says where is he.” Verse 29-”Such is the fate God allots the wicked, the heritage appointed for them by God.”

Chapter 21: Verse 3-Job said to Zophar, “Bear with me while I speak and after I have spoken go on mocking me.” Verses 12-16-he said, “Men make merry in their life, they spend their years in prosperity and go down to the grave in peace. Yet they say to God, ‘in life leave us alone!’ We have no desire to know your ways, so I stand away form the counsel of wicked men.”

Chapter 22: Verses 2-3-Eliphaz said to Job, “Can a man be of benefit to God? Can even a wise man benefit Him?” (Yes-Matthew 28:17-20)

Chapter 23: Verses 1-9-”Where can I find God, in the East or the West or North or South?” Verse 10-”But God knows the way that I take and when he has tested me I will come forth as gold.”

Chapter 24: Verses 16-17-Job said to all of them, “Men break into houses at night but in the day they shut themselves in, they want nothing to do with the light.” Verse 23-”He (God) may let men rest in a feeling of security, but His eyes are on their ways.”

Chapter 25: Verses 1-6-Bildad said, “How then can a man be righteous before God? How can they be pure?” (II Corinthians 5:21)

Chapter 26: Verse 10-Job said, “God marks out the horizon on the face of the waters for a boundary between light and darkness, the heavens quake, His power churns up the sea, and this is but the outer edges of His work. Who then can understand the thunder of His power?”

Chapter 27: Verses 3-4-Job continued, “As long as I have life in me that God gave me, my lips will not speak wickedness and my tongue will utter no deceit.”

Chapter 28: Verses 12-19-Job said, “Where can wisdom be found? Where does understanding dwell. Man does not understand where it is.” Verses 20-28-”Where is wisdom and understanding then?” So he said, “To man the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.”

Chapter 29: Verses 12-15-”I, Job, was commended by whoever heard me speak because I rescued the poor, the man who was dying blessed me. I made the widows heart sing, I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame.”

Chapter 30: Verses 1-2-”But now they mock me! What use was the strength of their hands to me since their vigor had gone from me?” Verses 9-10-”And now their sons mock me in songs.”

Chapter 31: Verses 6-7-”Let God weigh me in honest scales and he will know that I am blameless.” Verse 14-”What will I do when God confronts me?” Verses 31-32-”All men of my house have never said, ‘who has not had his fill of Job’s meat?’ And my door was always open to the traveler.” Verses 35-37-”Let God the Almighty answer me and let my accusers put all this in writing. I would give all of you an account of my every step (Job’s steps).”

Chapter 32: Verses 1-5-Elihu became very angry at Job and he was also angry with Job’s friends. Elihu waited before speaking to Job because they were all older than him. Verses 10-14-”So I say listen to me, I too will tell you what I know. Do not say, ‘we have wisdom.’ Let God refute Job, not man.”

Chapter 33: Verses 1-25-so Elihu said to Job, “Listen to me, God is greater than man, He says this to turn man from sin and to keep him from pride.” Verses 26-33-”Then man prays to God and finds favor with Him.” Elihu says to Job, “Answer me for I want you to be cleared.”

Chapter 34: Verses 9-12-Job said, “It profits a man nothing when he tries to please God. He (God) can do no evil.” Verse 19-”All men, kings, princes, rich people or poor, they are all the work of His hand.” Verse 33-”Should God reward you on your terms when you refuse to repent?” (Not at all)

Chapter 35: Verses 12-16-Elihu said, “God does not answer when men cry out because of the arrogance of the wicked.” So Elihu said to Job, “You open your mouth with empty talk.”

Chapter 36: Verses 1-33-Elihu’s judgment, he said, “I get my knowledge from afar. Who can understand how God does all this?”

Chapter 37: Verse 12-”At God’s command the waters swirl around over the whole earth to do whatever He commands them.” (Matthew 14:25; 8:23-27)

Chapter 38: Verses 1-4-the Lord speaks to Job, “Where were you when I laid the earth?”

Chapter 39: Verses 1-30-”Can you know all that I can and have done?”

Chapter 40: Verses 1-4-the Lord said to Job, “Will the one who contends with Me correct Me?” Then Job said, “I am unworthy, how can I reply to you God?” Verses 6-24-then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm.

Chapter 41: Verse 10-God said, “Who is able to stand against Me? Who has a claim against me that I must pay? Everything under heaven belongs to Me.”

Chapter 42: Verses 1-3-Job said, “I know that you can do all things, no plan of yours can be thwarted.” Verse 6-Job repents! Matt. 3:1,2. Verses 8-10-God said to Eliphaz and all the others, “You have not spoken of Me what is right as my servant Job has (Job 1:8). My servant Job will pray for you and I will accept his prayer.” So they did what the Lord told them. Verses 11-17-the Lord blessed Job more than at first.
