JOSHUA

Chapter 1: Verse 8-9-God said to Joshua, “Do not let this book of the law depart from your mouth. The Bible at that time was five books. Meditate on it day and night. Do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous. Joshua, be strong and courageous!

Chapter 2: Verses 1-7-the two spies meet Rahab. Verses 8-9-she said to the spies, “I know that the Lord has given this land to you. Fear has come on us here in Jericho. Verse 11-Rahab said, “The Lord God is God in heaven and on earth.” Verse 15-Rahab and her family lived in a house on the city wall.

Chapter 3: Verses 3-4-after thee days all the officers of Israel said, “When you see the Ark of the Covenant you are to move out and follow it. Then you will know which way to go. But do not go near the Ark.” Verses 14-17-the water from upstream stopped flowing and the priests who carried the Ark stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordon, and all Israel passed over. The whole nation completed the crossing on dry ground.

Chapter 4: Verses 1-8-the Lord said to Joshua, “Choose 12 men from each tribe. Tell them to get twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan to serve as a sign in the future for your children as a memorial forever.” (verse 23; the waters of the Jordan will be cut off-chapter 3:13-16; Exodus 14:21-22)

Chapter 5: Verses 2-4-Joshua said, “Make knives and circumcise the Israelites again,” and in verses 4 & 5 he said why he did this. Verses 10-12-the manna they ate stopped after they ate the Passover in Gilgal on the 14th day of that year. Verses 13-15-Joshua meets the commander of God’s army and he fell facedown in reverence. “Then the commander said to Joshua, “Take off your sandals, you are standing on a holy place!” (Moses-Exodus 3:5-6)

Chapter 6: Verse 10-in the battle of Jericho, Joshua said to the people, “Do not give a war cry, do not raise your voices, do not say a word until I say shout, then shout!” Verse 16-on the 7th time around they sounded the trumpet, then Joshua said, “Shout!” Verse 20-when the people shouted the walls of Jericho collapsed. Verses 23-25-the men who were spying out the city brought Rahab and her family out safely. Verse 27-Joshua’s fame spread throughout the land.

Chapter 7: Verse 1-Achan, from the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things, so the Lord’s anger burned against all of Israel. Verses 8-11-Joshua said, “O, Lord, what can I say now that Israel has been beaten by its enemies?” The Lord said to Joshua, “Stand up, what are you doing on your face? The people have stolen.” Verses 20-26-Achan repents, he said to Joshua, “I have sinned against the Lord.” The place is where they piled up rocks where Achan died. They called it the Valley of Achor.

Chapter 8: Verses 1-8-the destroying of Ai with 30 thousand men-this is how Joshua does it. He sets an ambush behind the city. Joshua said, “We who are left will advance on the city and when they come out against us we will flee from them, then you are to rise up from the ambush.” Verse 12-Joshua had taken 5 thousand men in ambush in front and 30 thousand behind. Verse 22-all the men of Ai were caught in the middle. Verses 25-29-12 thousand men and women fell that day, that was all of Ai, but the king, and Joshua hung the king of Ai on a tree, and piled and large pile of rocks over his body at the city of Ai’s gate.

Chapter 9: Verses 14-16-the Hivites lied to the Israelites in verses 4-9, but the men of Israel did not inquire of the Lord. 3 days after they made a treaty with the Gibeonites Israel found out they were neighbors. Verse 19-but they, Israel, gave them an oath by the Lord, so they could not touch them. Verse 24-the Gibeonites said, “We feared you because of what we were told how your God led Moses.”

Chapter 10: Verses 7-8-Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his entire army-with the best fighting men. The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid, I have given them into your hand.” Verse 11-the enemy fled before Israel and the Lord hurled large hailstones on them from the sky. More of them died from that than were killed by the sword. Verses 12-13-Joshua said, “O sun, stand still over Gibeon, and it did. The sun stopped for about a full day, and the moon also. Verse 42-all the kings were conquered in one campaign because the Lord fought for Israel.

Chapter 11: Verses 1-8-Joshua and his whole army attacked 12 kings and defeated them-the kings and their people. Verse 10-King Hazor had been the head of all these kingdoms. Verse 19-not one city made a treaty of peace with the Israelites.

Chapter 12: Verses 1-5-the list of all the kings defeated. Verses 7-24-Joshua gave the Israelites the land.

Chapter 13: Verses 1-7-Joshua is very old and there are still very large areas of land to be taken. Verse 33-the tribe of Levi, Moses had given no inheritance, they are priest, their inheritance is the Lord the God of Israel.

Chapter 14: Verses 8-9-the lie of the brothers of Joshua, but I, Joshua, Followed the Lord wholeheartedly. Verse 10-Joshua said, “I am now 85 years old, and I am just as vigorous to go out to battle as I was then, when I was 40 years old.”

Chapter 15: Verses 1-13-the allotment for the tribe of Judah extended to Edom, to the Zin Desert, the eastern boundary is the Salt Sea as far as to the Jordan. Verses 16-19-Caleb’s daughter marries Caleb’s brother and he gives her springs of water also. Verses 20-63-the inheritance of Judah is 29 towns and villages in the southernmost towns; in the western 14 towns and villages; then 16 more, 9 more, 11 more, 9 more, 10 more, 6 more, 2 more and 6 more.

Chapter 16: Verses 1-3-the allotment for Joseph began at the Jordan of Jericho and ending at the sea. Verses 4-10-Ephraim’s inheritance was from Bith Horon to the sea. The Manassites were there also.

Chapter 17: Verses 2-6-the allotment for the rest of the people of Manasseh-he had all daughters, so Joshua gave them an inheritance with the men. It was the Lord’s command. Verses 17-18-Joshua said to Joseph and Ephraim and Manasseh, “You have great numbers and power and you will drive the Canaanites out. You will have the hill country as well, so clear it and its farthest limits are yours.

Chapter 18: Verses 1-10-7 tribes who had not received their inheritance at Shiloh-Joshua appointed 3 men to get it done. Verses 11-28-the allotment of Benjamin was between the tribes of Judah and Joseph-Joseph is Benjamin’s father.

Chapter 19: Verses 1-9-the allotment for Simeon! Verses 10-16-the allotment for Zebulun! Verses 17-23-the allotment for Issachar! Verses 24-31-the allotment for Asher! Verses 32-39-the allotment for Naphtali! Verses 40-48-the allotment for Dan! Verses 49-51-the allotment for Joshua!

Chapter 20: Verses 1-5-the Lord said to Joshua, “Tell the Israelites to designate the cities of refuge. This is for anyone who kills a person accidentally. They may flee there and find protection from an avenger.” Verses 6-9-he is to stay in the city until he has stood trial before the assembly and high priest.

Chapter 21: Verses 1-40-the Levites go to Joshua for towns to live in which are to come from the inheritance of the tribes. Verse 41-the towns were in all 48! Verse 44-all the Lord’s promises, every one was fulfilled.

Chapter 22: Verses 1-9-the Reubenites, Gadites and 1/2 tribe of Manasseh left the Israelites at Shiloh and went home to Gilead, the land which Moses gave them. Verses 10-33-the misunderstanding about an altar and the Priest Eleazar said to them, “Today we know that the Lord is with us all.” Verse 34-the Reubenites and Gadites gave the altar this name-a witness between us that the Lord is God.

Chapter 23: Verses 1-6-after a long time the Lord gave Israel rest from their enemies. Joshua by then was old. He summoned all Israel and said, “You have seen all the Lord God has done, be very strong and obey all that is written in the book of the law Moses gave you.” Verses 12-13-”But if you turn away to those nations you have defeated, then you may be sure the Lord will not be with you.” Verse 14-”You know that not one of the promises the Lord gave you has failed.”

Chapter 24: Verses 1-10-Joshua assembles all of Israel at Shechem. He said, “Remember all the Lord God has promised.” Verses 11-14-”That is why you crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho, and God gave all this into your hands. You did not do it with your own sword, so fear the Lord and serve Him with all faithfulness.” Verse 15-”Choose this day who you will serve. Me and my household will serve the Lord.” Verse 29-Joshua died at the age of 110 years. Verse 32-Joseph’s bones were buried at Shechem, the land Jacob bought!


JUDGES

Chapter 1: Verse 9-Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites in the hill country. Verses 12-15-Caleb said, “I will give my daughter in marriage to the man who captures the land of Kirrath.” So Othniel, Caleb’s younger brother did it and married Achsah, Caleb’s daughter. Verses 19-33-the Canaanites were determined to live in that land even if they had to live in forced labor.

Chapter 2: Verse 3-God said, “All these will be thorns in your sides and their gods will be a snare to you.” Verses 10-15-after many generations they knew neither the Lord nor what He had done for Israel, and then they served the Baal gods. Then Israel was no longer able to resist the enemies of Israel. This happened after Joshua died. Verses 16-17-that is why the Lord raised up judges, but they would not listen to the judges, but prostituted themselves to other gods.

Chapter 3: Verses 4-8-Baal and others were left to test the Israelites to see whether they would obey the Lord’s commands, and they did not. Verse 9-Othniel, Kenaz’s son (Kenaz was one of Caleb’s younger brothers) became a judge of Israel and he saved them. He made peace for Israel for 40 years until Othniel died. Verses 15-30-Ehud, a left-handed man-made peace for 18 years.

Chapter 4: Verse 1-after Ehud died, Israel once again did evil. Verses 4-6-Deborah, a prophetess, was leading Israel at this time in the hill country of Ephraim. The Israelites came to her to have their disputes decided. She said, “Take 10,000 men and lead the way to Mount Tabor.”

Chapter 5: Verses 1-31-after Deborah and Barak’s victory they sang a song, “So may all the enemies of the Lord perish. O, Lord, may those who love you be like the sun when it rises in its strength.” Then the land of Israel had peace for 40 years.

Chapter 6: Verses 13-16-Gideon said to the Lord, “Why are we suffering like this?” The Lord said, “Gideon, go in the strength you have and save Israel-I am sending you.” Gideon said, “I am the least in my family.” The Lord answered him, “I will be with you.” Verse 24-Gideon built and altar to the Lord and called it the Lord is Peace. Verses 37-39-Gideon with the fleece before the Lord!

Chapter 7: Verses 1-2-Jerubbaal (that is Gideon), the Lord said to Gideon, “You have to many men for the battle.” Verse 3-at Midian, Israel must not be able to boast. 22,000 men go home, then 7,000 men go home and 300 are left. Verse 22-the Midianites turn on each other with their swords.

Chapter 8: Verses 10-12-Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings that Gideon and his 300 men were pursuing, the Kings of Midian-all they had left were 15,000 men out of 120,000 that had fallen. Verses 22-23-all of Israel said to Gideon, “Rule over us.” Gideon said, “No, the Lord will rule over you.” Verse 26-instead they gave him 43 pounds of earrings. Verse 28-the land enjoyed peace for 40 years. Verses 29-32-Jerubbaal (that is Gideon) went back home to live, and he had 70 sons of his own for he had many wives. Gideon died very old. Verse 35-Israel failed to show kindness to Gideon’s family.

Chapter 9: Verse 4-Abimelech, Gideon’s first son, murdered his 70 brothers, the sons of Gideon. But Jothan, the youngest son of Gideon escaped. All the citizens of Shechem crowned Abimelech king. Verses 10-15-Jothan, Gideon’s youngest son, said as he stood on the mount, “The trees said to the fig tree, come and be our king, but the fig tree replied, should I give up my fruit so good? “ (Matthew 21:18-22) Verse 18-Abimelech was the son of a slave girl. Verse 22-after Abimelech governed Israel 3 years God sent an evil spirit between him and Shechem. God did that to avenge him and the city. Verse 53-a woman drops a stone on the head of Abimelech, and a servant of his killed him with a sword.

Chapter 10: Verses 1-5-the leader of Israel was Abimelech for 23 years. He died and was followed by Jair. He led for 22 years. He had 30 sons, then he died. Verses 6-14-again, Israel did evil and served Baals. The Lord said, “You have forsaken me, I can no longer save you.”

Chapter 11: Verses 9-10-Jephthah said to the people of Gilead, “If I fight the Ammonites, and we win, and the Lord gives them to me, will I really be your head? They replied, “The Lord is our witness, we will do as you say.” Verses 13-15-the king of the Ammonites said, “We will fight because you took away our land.” Jephthah sent a message to the Ammonite king. Verses 16-31-the message he sent is in verses 16-31. Verse 36-Jephthah’s daughter said to him, “Do to me just as the Lord says.”

Chapter 12: Verse 7-Jephthah led Israel 6 years and then he died. Verses 8-10-Ibzan led Israel-he had 30 sons and 30 daughters. He led Israel for 7 year’s and died. Verse 11-Elon led them 10 years and he died. Verses 13-15-after he died Abdon led Israel and he had 40 sons and 30 grandsons. He led for 8 years and he died. He was buried in Ephraim. These were the leaders of Israel for 31 years.

Chapter 13: Verse 1-again Israel did evil in the eyes of the Lord. Verses 2-7-a man named Manoah had a wife who was sterile. The angel of the Lord said to her, “You are going to have a son, so don’t drink wine or eat anything unclean, and no razor may touch his head, for he is to be a Nazirite. He will deliver Israel from the Philistines.” Then she told her husband what happened. Verses 17-18-Manoah inquired of the angel of the Lord, “What is your name?” The angel said, “It is beyond your understanding.” Verse 20-as the flame from the altar burned the angel ascended in the flame. They realized it was the Lord. Verse 24-the woman gave birth to Samson.

Chapter 14: Verses 1-4-Samson gets married to a Philistine woman. His parents replied, “Isn’t there an acceptable woman here to get for a wife?” At that time the Philistines ruled Israel. Verse 6-Samson tears a lion apart with his hands. Verse 12-Samson tells a riddle and said, “Give me the answer in 7 days.” Verse 14-the riddle is, “Out of the eater something to eat, out of the strong something sweet.” Verses 16-18-Samson’s wife betrays him. Verse 18-the answer to the riddle was, “What is sweeter than honey? What is stronger than a lion?” Verse 19-Samson strikes down 30 men.

Chapter 15: Verses 4-5-Samson caught 300 foxes and tied their tails together. Then he fastened a torch to their tails and let them loose in the grain of the Philistines. Verses 15-16-Samson struck down 1,000 men with the jawbone of a donkey. Verse 19-God opened a hollow place in Lehi and water came out for Samson to drink. Verse 20-Samson led Israel for 20 years against the Philistines.

Chapter 16: Verses 4-20-Samson falls in love with Delilah. The Philistines said to her, “See if you can learn the secret of his strength.” She said, “Yes.” She used fresh thongs and new rope and wove the braid of his head into fabric. Delilah said, “How can you say I love you when you won’t confide in me?” So Samson told her all she had to do and the Lord left him. Verse 21-Samson is blinded! Verse 25-31-at a party, the Philistines said, “Bring Samson out to entertain us.” 300 men and women watch him. God the Lord returns to Samson. Then he said, “Let me die with the Philistines.” Samson pushed with all his might and down came the temple on all the rulers and people of the Philistines. Then his family buried him with his father.

Chapter 17: Verses 1-3-a man name Micah from Ephraim said to his mother, “I have the silver that was taken from you. It was 1,100 shekels, I have the silver with me.” His mother blessed him. Verse 7-a young Levite came to live with Micah.

Chapter 18: Verses 1-6-the 5 men came to spy out the land. These men represented all their clans. The men came to Ephraim, and came to Micah’s house, and recognized the Levite priest. He said, “Go in peace, your journey has the Lord’s approval.” Verse 31-the Danites continued to use the silver idols Micah had made from his mother’s lost silver.

Chapter 19: Verses 1-10-in those days Israel had no king. A Levite in Ephraim had a concubine from Bethlehem. She was unfaithful to the Levite and left him and went home to her father. Her husband went to Bethlehem to take her back. The Levite stayed at the father’s house for several days. Verses 20-29-a story about wicked homosexual men!

Chapter 20: Verses 12-13-all the tribes of Israel said, “What about this awful crime?” They surrendered these wicked men of Gibeah into the hands of Israel to put them to death. Verse 16-in the army of soldiers there were 700 left handed men. Verses 34-41-the fighting was so heavy the Benjamites did not realize how near disaster was. On that day 25,100 died.

Chapter 21: Verses 1-3-it was hard for Israel to see this happen. They said, “Why should one tribe be missing from us.” Verse 6-now the Israelites grieved for their brothers, the Benjamites. Verse 13-the whole assembly sent an offering of peace to the Benjamites at the Rock of Rimmon. Verses 15-17-the people grieved for Benjamin because the Lord had made a gap in the tribes. Then the elders said, “The women of Benjamin have no men. How shall we provide wives for the men who are left? We cannot let a tribe of Israel be wiped out.” Verses 23-25-while the girls of Shiloh were dancing, each Benjamites man caught one of them and carried her off to be his wife. Then they returned to their inheritance and rebuilt the town and settled there. In those days Israel had no king, everyone did as he saw fit. (Matthew 24:3-4) This time period was for the judges who ruled the tribes of Israel.


RUTH

Chapter 1: Verses 3-6-Naomi’s husband died and she was left with 2 sons, and they married Moabite women. They were Orpah and Ruth. After 10 years Naomi’s sons died also. Verses 14-17-Orpah wept, and then kissed her mother-in-law goodbye, but Ruth clung to Naomi. She said, “Where you go I will go. Your people will be my people and your God will be my God.”

Chapter 2: Verses 3-9-Ruth went out and began working in the field that was Boaz’s field. He said, “Whose young woman is this.” Then Boaz said to Ruth, “Stay here with my servants.”

Chapter 3: Verses 1-14-Naomi, Ruth’s mother-in-law, tells Ruth what she should do about Boaz. So Ruth does what she says.

Chapter 4: Verses 2-4-Boaz took 10 of the elders of Bethlehem to sell land that belonged to Elimelech, Naomi’s husband, who died. Boaz is next in line to buy the land. Verse 6-They said to Boaz, “You redeem it yourself.” Verse 7-now in earlier times in Israel for the redemption and transfers of property to become final, one party took off is sandal and gave it to the other. This was the method of legalizing transactions in Israel. So Boaz did this. So Ruth became his wife. Verses 13-22-Boaz took Ruth as his wife and they had a son and named him Obed. Obed became the father of Jesse, and he became the father of David.


I SAMUEL

Chapter 1: Verses 1-6-a man named Elkanah who was from Ephraim. He had 2 wives, Hannah and Peninnah. Eli was the priest. Peninnah had children but Hannah had none. Elkanah loved Hannah and he gave her double portions. Verses 11-13-Hannah made a vow to the Lord that if He would give her a son, she would give him back to the Lord. Verse 20-in the course of time Hannah had a son and she named him Samuel.

Chapter 2: Verse 2-Hannah’s prayer, “There is no one holy like the Lord; there is no one besides You; there is no Rock like our God (II Samuel 22:32, 47; Matthew 16:13-18). Jesus is the Rock for He is God!” Verse 6-”The Lord brings death and makes alive. He brings down to the grave and raise up.” (John 11:25) Verse 17-Eli the priest sons did sin in the sight of the Lord. Verse 21-Eli prayed for Hannah and she gave birth to 3 sons and 2 daughters. Her first-born son, Samuel, grew up in the presence of the Lord. Verse 25-Eli disciplined his sons and God puts them to death. Verse 26-the boy Samuel continued to grow in the Lord and in favor with God and men (Proverbs 3:3-4). Verse 30-the Lord declares, “Those who honor Me, I will honor, but those who despise Me will be disdained.”

Chapter 3: Verses 2-3-Eli’s eyes were so weak that he could barely see at this time. Samuel was lying in the Temple near the Ark of God. Verses 4-15-the Lord called Samuel and he thought is was Eli. Eli said, “I did not call you, go back and lay down.” The Lord did this three times. The 4th time Samuel said, “Speak Lord, your servant is listening.” Verse 18-God judges Eli for the sin of his sons. Eli said, “He is the Lord, let Him do what is good in His eyes.” Verse 20-then all Israel recognized that Samuel was a prophet of the Lord.

Chapter 4: Verse 2-Israel is defeated by the Philistines who killed 4,000 of them. Verses 17-20-the Philistines killed Eli’s 2 sons and captured the Ark of the Lord. Then Eli fell off his chair and broke his neck and he died. Eli led Israel 40 years. The wife of Phinohas gave birth to a son, then she died. The boys name was Ichabod (verse 15, Eli was 98 years old).

Chapter 5: Verses 4-10-God’s hand was very heavy on the Philistines and on Ekron because of the Ark. Verse 11-they all said, “Let the Ark go back to its place in Israel.”

Chapter 6: Verses 5-17-pay honor to Israel’s God and He will lift His hand from you. So the Philistines put the Ark on a new cart and in a chest beside it gold objects, and sent it back.

Chapter 7: Verses1-2-they took the Ark to Kiriath-Jearim’s house and his son, Eleazar, had to guard it. The Ark stayed there for 20 years. Verse 4-so the Israelites put away their foreign gods and served the Lord God! Verse 13-the Philistines did not invade Israel again throughout Samuel’s lifetime. Verse 15-Samuel continued as judge over Israel all the days of his life.

Chapter 8: Verses 1-6-when Samuel grew old he appointed his sons as judges, but they did not walk in the ways of their father. So the people asked for a king and this displeased Samuel. Verse 7-God said to him, “It is not you they are rejecting, but it is Me.” Verse 19-the people refused to listen to Samuel-we want a king. Verse 22-the Lord said, “Give them a king.”

Chapter 9: Verses 2-3-there was a son from Benjamin whose name was Saul. He was taller than all the others. His father’s name is Kish. Verses 15-19-the Lord said to Samuel, “Tomorrow I will send you a man form the land of Benjamin. You will anoint him King of Israel.” Saul asked Samuel, “Tell me where the seer is.” He said, “I am he.” Verse 27-Samuel gives Saul a message from God.

Chapter 10: Verses 11-12-when all the people who knew Saul before said, “Is Saul a prophet?” Verse 27-some said, “How can this fellow save us?” But Saul kept silent
.
Chapter 11: Verses 5-6-Saul asked, “What is wrong with the people? Why are they weeping?” Then the men repeated what the Jabeshites said about gouging out the right eye in verse 3. Then the Spirit of God came upon him in power and Saul burned with anger. Verse 8-when Saul numbered the men of Israel, it was numbered at 300,000, and the men of Judah were 30,000. Verse 15-so all the people went to Gilgal and confirmed Saul as king in the presence of the Lord.

Chapter 12: Verses 1-4-Samuel said, “If I have done any wrong to you I will make it right, for I am old and gray.” The people said, “You have not cheated us.” Verses 8-12-Samuel said to all the people of Israel, “I am going to give you the evidence as to all the righteous acts performed by the Lord for you and your fathers. In all this you said we want a king, even though the Lord your God was your King.” Verse 15-”But if you don’t obey the Lord His hand will be against you.” Verse 21-”Do not turn to idols, they can do you no good.”

Chapter 13: Verse 1-Saul was 30 years old when he became king and he reigned over Israel for 42 years. Verses 13-14-Saul acted foolishly, so the Lord has sought out a man after His own heart because Saul had not kept the Lord’s commands. Verse 22-so on the day of battle, not one of the soldiers of Saul had a sword or spear in his hand. Only Saul and his son Jonathan had them.

Chapter 14: Verse 14-Jonathan and his armor bearer killed 20 men in an area about half and acre. Verse 23-the Lord rescued Israel that day. Verse 47-after Saul had assumed rule over Israel he fought against their enemies on every side. Verse 50-the name of the commander of Saul’s army was Abner.

Chapter 15: Verses 10-11-the Lord said to Samuel, “I am grieved that I have made Saul king, for he has turned away from me.” Samuel cried the whole night. Verse 12-Saul has set up a monument in his own honor. Verse 22-does the Lord delight in burnt offerings as much as in obeying the voice of the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifices. Verse 27-Samuel said to Saul, “The Lord has torn the Kingdom of Israel from you and has given it to one better than you.” Verse 35-Samuel left Saul and he mourned for Saul. The Lord was grieved with Saul.

Chapter 16: Verse 7-Samuel saw Eliab, Jesse’s son, and said, “Surely the Lord’s anointed one is Eliab.” The Lord said to Samuel, “No, this is not the one. You look at the man’s height, I look at men’s hearts.” Verse 8-13-all 7 sons of Jesse passed by Samuel. Then he said to Jesse, “Is this all your sons?” Jesse said, “There is one tending the sheep.” Samuel said, “This is the one.” So Samuel took oil and anointed David.

Chapter 17: Verses 4-11-David meets Goliath, and Goliath said, “Choose a man to come to me if he is able to fight.” Verses 17-19-Jesse, David’s father, said, “Take this food to your brothers.” Verse 26-then David said to the army of Israel, “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that defies God?” Verses 32-37-David said to King Saul, “I will fight the Philistine.” Saul said, “You are only a boy.” David’s answer was, “When a lion or a bear came at my father’s sheep I rescued the sheep when they turned on me.” Verses 45-51-David said to Goliath, “You come against me with sword and spear, but I come against you in the Name of the Lord Almighty. I will strike you down and cut off your head and the whole world will know my God.” The Philistines turned and ran.

Chapter 18: Verses 12-13-Saul was afraid of David because the Lord was with David, but He had left Saul. Everything David did he had great success because the Lord was with him. Verse 27-David’s marriage to Michal, Saul’s daughter.

Chapter 19: Verses 1-5-Saul told his attendant to kill David, but Jonathan, Saul’s son, was fond of David so he warned David to be on his guard. Verse 12-Michal let David down through a window and he escaped. Michal is David’s wife and Saul’s daughter. Verse 18-Then David went to Samuel at Ramas and told him what Saul had done to him.

Chapter 20: Verses 18-23-Jonathan said to David, “Tomorrow is the festival.” David said, “I can’t go.” Verse 42-Jonathan and David swore oath of friendship to the Lord forever.

Chapter 21: Verses 4-6-David said to the priest of Ahimelech, “I need some bread.” The priest said, “I don’t have any except the consecrated bread.” So the priest gave it to him since there was no regular bread (Matthew 12:1-4). Verse 9-David said to the priest, “I need a sword.” The priest said, “The only sword I have is the one you killed Goliath with. Take it, there is none like it.” David said, “Give it to me.”

Chapter 22: Verses 14-16-Ahimelech answer’s Saul and said, “Who of all your servants is as loyal as David.” But King Saul said to him, “You will surely die - you and your whole family.” Verse 17-then he kills the priests because they sided with David. Verse 20-Abiathar, the son of Ahimelech, escaped to tell David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord.

Chapter 23: Verse 13-David and 600 of his men left Keilah to save them from Saul. Verses 16-18-Jonathan and David made a covenant before the Lord.

Chapter 24: Verses 4-13-David refuses to kill Saul. “Some urged me to kill you.” I said to them, “I will not lift my hand against the Lord’s anointed. But he is hunting me to take my life.” Verses 16-22-Saul repents to David.

Chapter 25: Verse 1-Samuel died and all Israel mourned for him. At this time David moved into the Desert of Maon (Chapter 28:3-Samuel is buried in Ramah). Verse 18-Abigail’s husband Nabal was a very wicked man, but Abigail helped David. She sent him bread, wine, sheep, grain, raisin cakes and figs, but she did not tell her wicked husband. Verses 32-33-David said to Abigail, “Praise the Lord who has sent you to meet me. May you be blessed for your good judgment, and from the bloodshed and from avenging myself with my own hands.” Verse 38-Abigail told Nabal all she did and it gave him a heart problem and Nabal died.

Chapter 26: Verse 12-the Lord put all Saul’s men into a deep sleep as David took the spear of Saul. Verses 15-16-David said to Abner, one of Saul’s men, “Why didn’t you guard your king? Look around you, where is the king’s spear?” (The second time in I Samuel 24:4-13) Verse 22-David gives the spear back to Saul.

Chapter 27: Verse 4-when Saul was told that David had fled to Gath, he no longer searched for him. David went to live in the land of the Philistines. He lived there for 1 year and four months.

Chapter 28: Verses 8-19-Saul went to a woman (a medium-seer) after the Lord did not answer him. He said to her, “Bring back one from the dead; the one I name.” The woman asked, “Who shall I bring up?” Saul said, Samuel!” Then Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me?” He said to Saul, “The Lord has torn the kingdom out of your hands and given it to David because you did not obey Him.” Samuel said, “Tomorrow the Lord will hand Israel and you to the Philistines, and you and your son will be with me.” (In Matthew 17:1-5-Moses and Elijah with Jesus) Verses 21-25-the woman who was a medium gave Saul food to eat.

Chapter 29: Verse 4-the Philistine commander was angry with David so they got up early in the morning to go back to the land of the Philistines.

Chapter 30: Verse 21-the plunder that David brought back was for all of them, even if they did not come with him.

Chapter 31: Verses 2-6-after Jonathan were killed, the Philistines pressed hard. Saul at the time said to his armor bearer, “Draw your sword and kill me.” He did not want to do it. So Saul took the sword and fell on it. On that day Saul and his 3 sons and his armor bearer died together. Verses 7-10-the Philistines came and occupied Israel. When they came to the Mount of Gilboa, they found Saul and cut off his head and took his armor and they sent it throughout the land. They also fastened his body to the wall of Beth Shan. Verse 11-when the people of Jabesh Gilead heard of what the Philistines had done to Saul their valiant men journeyed through the night. When they got there they took down the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall and they went to Jabesh where they burned them up. They took the bones of their bodies and buried them under a tree. Then they fasted 7 days! (In I Samuel 28:3, Samuel was dead, but in verse 13 Samuel comes up out of the ground. Verse 14, Saul knew it was Samuel. Verse 15, Samuel said, “Why have you disturbed me?” Verse 17, Samuel told Saul, “The Lord gave the kingdom to David, tomorrow you and your sons will be with me

II SAMUEL

Chapter 1: Verses 9-12-a young man who brought David the report of Saul and Jonathan-the young man said, “Saul asked me to kill him, so I did it” (this was a lie-I Samuel 31:4-6). Saul killed himself. David wept with all the men with him. Verse 15-David ordered the young man to be killed for killing the Lord’s anointed.

Chapter 2: Verse 7-David said to the one that buried Saul, “Be strong and brave, for Saul is dead, and by the house of Judah I am anointed king.” Verses 10-11-Saul’s son, Ishbosheth, was 40 years old and Abner, commander of Saul’s Army, made him king over Israel. He reigned for 2 years, but the house of Judah loved David and followed him. Verses 12-17-12 men from Abner’s side of the pool fight hand to hand with 12 men from David side. David’s men won.

Chapter 3: Verses 1-5-David grew stronger while Saul’s house grew weaker. The sons of David are born-1-Amnon, 2-Chileab, 3-Abbsalom, 4-Adonijah, 5-Shephatiah, 6-Ithream. These were born in Hebron. Verses 36-39-all the people were pleased with David as their king. But David was sad for the death of Abner and said, “All though I am anointed king, I pray may the Lord repay the evil doers according to his evil deeds (verse 35-David is King of Israel).

Chapter 4: Verse 4-Jonathan had a son who was lame in both his feet. When he was 5 years old his nurse dropped him. He fell and became crippled. His name was Mephibosheth.

Chapter 5: Verse 4-David was thirty years old when he became king. His reign was 40 years-in Judah 7 years and in Jerusalem 33 years. Verse 10-David became more and more powerful because the Lord God was with him. Verse 12-David knew that the Lord had established him as king over all Israel. Verses 17-25-the Lord said to David, “I will surely hand the Philistines over to you.” When this happened the Philistines abandoned their idols.

Chapter 6: Verses 1-7-David brought Israel 30,000 in all, going to Judah, to bring up the Ark of God. When they come to the threshing floor, Uzziah took hold of the ark with his hand and God struck him and he died. Verses 11-12-the ark remained in the house of Oben-Edom for 3 months and the Lord blessed Obed-Edom. Verses 13-14-David was dancing before the Lord when they brought the ark to the city of David. Verses 20-22-David at the time of the return of the ark found displeasure from Michal. Verse 23-Michal, wife of David and daughter of Saul (I Samuel 18:28), had not children unto the day of her death.

Chapter 7: Verses 15-16-God said to David, “My love will never be taken from your son as I took it away from Saul. David, your house (family) and kingdom will endure forever.” Verse 20-David said to the Lord, “You know your servant.”

Chapter 8: Verse 13-David became famous after he returned from striking down the enemy-18,000 Edomites-in the Valley of Salt.

Chapter 9: Verses 3-10-Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan, grandson of Saul-David asked for someone from Saul’s family to whom he could show kindness to. A man named Makir showed David this man. David said to Mephibosheth, “I will restore all the land that belonged to Saul, your grandfather, to you and you will always eat at my table (II Samuel 4:4). Verses 12-13-Mephibosheth had a son named Mica. Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem all his days and ate at the king’s table.

Chapter 10: Verses 2-4-David shows kindness again to Nahash’s son, Hamon, just as his father showed to David. But Hamon did not believe it. Verses 6-19-David defeated the Ammonites.

Chapter 11: Verses 2-17-David remained in Jerusalem during the war on the Ammonites, and he sinned with Bathsheba. Verses 24-27-Uriah, the husband of Bathsheba, is dead. David brings Bathsheba to his house and she becomes his wife and bears him a son. In it all David displeased the Lord.

Chapter 12: Verses 1-4-Nathan the priest tells David a story. Then David gets angry! Verses 5-10-he said, “The man who did this deserves to die.” But Nathan said to David, “You are the man.” Verses 13-19-Nathan said to David, “You will not die but your son will die.” David pleaded with God for the child. On the 7th day the child died. David asked, “Is the child dead?” They replied, “Yes, he is dead.” Verses 21-23-David’s servants asked. “Why are you acting so different now that the child is dead?” David said, “I will go to the boy, but he can not return to me.” Verse 24-Bathsheba has another son-his name is Solomon.

Chapter 13: Verses 6-14-Amnon, David’s son, laid down and pretended to be ill. He was in love with Tamar his sister. She came to feed Amnon. He said to her, “Come to bed with me, my sister.” She said, “Don’t do this wicked thing. We should be married, tell the king to marry us.” Verses 30-33-a lie was reported to David that Absalom struck down all of King David’s sons. A man named Jonabad said to David, “Only Amnon is dead.” Verse 35-a watchman said, “I see men coming.” Johabad said to David, “See there is your sons.” Then David wept bitterly.

Chapter 14: Verses 25-26-in all Israel there was not a man so praised as Absalom, David’s son. His hair became heavy. Verse 28-Absalom lived 2 years in Jerusalem and did not see the king, his father. Verse 33-Absalom came to the king and bowed to him and the king, his father, kissed his son.

Chapter 15: Verses 4-6-Absalom acted as judge and had people bow down to him. He behaved this way toward all the Israelites who came to see the king. Verses 10-12-Absalom said, “As soon as you hear the trumpets say Absalom is King of Hebron.” 200 men from Jerusalem went with him. Absalom’s following kept increasing. Verses 19-21-David is fleeing from Absalom, and he said to Ittai, “You are a stranger here. Go back and stay with Absalom.” Ittai replied to David, “As surely as the Lord lives, wherever you go, we go.” Verse 30-David goes up to the Mount of Olives, weeping on the way.

Chapter 16: Verses 1-4-a man called Ziba, the one who took care of Miphibosheth, King Saul’s son, all that belonged to him is yours Ziba. Verses 5-10-the man named Shimei, from Saul’s family, was cursing David. Who can ask why he did this (verse 13).

Chapter 17: Verse 4-a plan by Absalom, David’s son, to kill David, seemed to be a good plan, but it did not work. Verse 14-a man named Hoshai gave some advice to Absalom, but God frustrated the advice in order to bring disaster on Absalom. Verse 21-two men climbed out of a well and informed King David. Verse 23-a man named Ahithophel who betrayed David hanged himself.

Chapter 18: Verses 2-3-David sent troops with captains 1,000s and 100s. They were under Abishai, Joab’s brother. The king marched out with them but the men said no to David, “You are worth ten thousand of us. Lead us from the city.” Verse 5-King David said, “Be gentle with my son, Absalom, for my sake.” He said this to all the commanders of his army. Verses 9-14-Absalom went under some thick branches of oak and his head got caught in the tree. One of the men in the army saw it and he told Joab. Joab took 3 javelins in his hand and plunged them into Absalom’s heart while he was alive in the tree, Verse 33-King David wept for Absalom his son.

Chapter 19: Verses 5-8-Joab said to David, “Today you have humiliated all who fought for you. Go out and encourage them.” Verses 22-31-David is King of Israel again. Mephibosheth also went down to meet the king. He had not taken care of his feet or washed his clothes since David left Jerusalem. The king said to him, “Why didn’t you go with me?”

Chapter 20: Verses 1-26-all the men of Judah stayed by King David, but those of Israel deserted him to follow Sheba. Joab was over all the Israel army.

Chapter 21: Verses 4-14-the Gibeonites said to David, “We have no right to put anyone in Israel to death.” So David asked, “What can I do for you?” They said, “We have been homeless because of Saul.” David gave 7 of Saul’s family to them, but not Saul’s grandson Mephibosheth, although they killed all 7 sons of Saul. Verse 20-the man hanged had 6 fingers on each hand and 6 toes on each foot.

Chapter 22: Verses 1-a song David sang to the Lord when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from Saul also. Verses 2-51-this is David’s song, “The Lord is my Rock, my Deliverer. In Him is salvation. I call to the Lord who is worthy of Praise. From His temple He heard me. He (God) parted the heavens and came down (Matthew 24:21-22). He rescued me because He delighted in me. To the faithful You show Yourself faithful. The word of the Lord is flawless. Who is the Rock except our God the Lord (Matthew 16:18). You, Lord, have delivered me from the attacks of my own people and preserved me as the head of nations-people I did not know. Praise be to my Rock, the Rock of my Savior. God shows unfailing kindness to His anointed, to David and his descendants forever.”

Chapter 23: Verse 3-David said, “When one rules over men in righteousness, when he rules in the fear of God, he is like the light in the morning at sunrise.” Verses 8-12-David’s mighty men-1-Joshed who was chief of 3. He killed 800 men in one encounter. 2-Eleazar was one of the 3 mighty men. He stood his ground and struck down the Philistines till his hand froze to the sword. 3-Shammah who took his stand in a field and struck the Philistines. These are 3 men David loved. Verses 24-39-the rest of his men are listed here.

Chapter 24: Verses 1-9-the anger of the Lord burned against Israel so He said to David, “Go and take a census of Israel and Judah.” Joab said to David, “Why do you want to do such a thing?” At the end of 9 months and 20 days Joab reported the number to the king. In Israel there were 800,000 and in Judah 500,000. Verse 14-David said to Gad, “I am in deep distress. Let us fall into the hands of the Lord, for His mercy is great, but do not let me fall into the hand of man.” Verse 17-when David saw the angel who was striking down the people he said to the Lord, “I am the one who has sinned, these are but sheep” (Psalm 23). Verse 25-the Lord answered David’s prayer and the plague on Israel was stopped.

I KINGS

Chapter 1: Verses 5-7-Adonijah said, “I will be king,” when King David was old and sick. Verses 17-25-Bathsheba said to David, “You, yourself, swore to me by the Lord God, Solomon shall be king.” Then Nathan the prophet came and he said to David, “Have you declared Adonijah king?” Verses 28-30-then King David called Bathsheba and said to her, “I take and oath, as surely as I know the Lord lives, what I swore to God, Solomon shall be king after me.” Verses 37-39-Benhiah said to David, “So may the Lord be with Solomon as he is with you.” Verse 40-and all the people shouted, “Long live King Solomon,” rejoicing greatly. Verses 42-53-Jonathan brings Adonijah the news of King Solomon. Adonijah fears Solomon and he was told to go home.

Chapter 2: Verses 1-3-David charges his son, Solomon, “Be strong and observe what the Lord requires of you. Walk in His ways and keep His commands as it is written in the Law of Moses.” (Matthew 23:1-3) Verses 10-12-David died! He had reigned 40 years over Israel-7 years in Hebron and 30 in Jerusalem. So Solomon sat on the throne of his father, David, and his rule was firmly established. Verses 13-25-Adonijah goes to Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother, to ask for a wife and Solomon put him to death. Verses 34-46-Solomon puts Joab to death and also Shimei had to die.

Chapter 3: Verse 1-Solomon made an alliance with the King of Egypt and Solomon married his daughter. He brought her to the City of David until he finished the temple and the wall around Jerusalem. Verses 5-10-God said to Solomon in a dream, “Ask whatever your want me to give you.” Solomon said, “Give me a discerning heart (wisdom) to govern your people.”

Chapter 4: Verses 20-21-under Solomon’s reign the people of Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand on the seashore. Verse 25-during Solomon’s lifetime Judah and Israel lived in safety. Verse 30-Solomon’s wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all men. Verse 32-Solomon spoke 3000 proverbs and 1005 songs. Verse 34-men came from all nations to listen to him.

Chapter 5: Verses 4-5-Solomon said to Hiram, King of Tyre, “Now the Lord my God has given me rest on every side and there is no adversary or disaster. I intent, therefore, to build a temple for the Name of the Lord my God as my father said.” Verse 7-Hiram was pleased and said, “Praise the Lord!” Verses 9-10-Hiram’s men hauled pine logs down form Lebanon. He floated them down by the sea. He kept Solomon supplied with cedar pine logs.

Chapter 6: Verse 1-Solomon builds the temple 418 years after the Israelites came out of Egypt. Verses 14-15-for the walls of the temple he used cedar and the floors with pine. Verse 16-the sanctuary was the Most Holy Place. Verse 19-he prepared the inner sanctuary to set the Ark. Verses 23-28-he made a pair of cherubim of olivewood and overlaid them with gold. Verse 38-it took 7 years to build the temple.

Chapter 7: Verses 1-2-it took 13 years to complete the palace. He built the palace with the wood from Lebanon. Verse 40-so Hiram finished all the work he had done for Solomon in the Temple of the Lord. Verse 48-Solomon also made all the furnishings that were in the Lord’s Temple. Verse 51-when all the work Solomon had done for the temple was finished, he brought the things his father David had dedicated.

Chapter 8: Verses 1-9-King Solomon and the entire assembly of Israel were before the Ark of God in the presence of Solomon in Jerusalem. The Levite priest carried the Ark up with all the things in it to the temple, and all that was in the Ark was the two stone tablets that Moses placed in the Ark. Verses 15-21-Solomon blesses the people. Verses 22-61-Solomon’s prayer of dedication! He said, “There is no God like You,” (verse 39). In chapter 8, verses 35-36 and 46-47 are New Testament cross references to II Corinthians 7:13-16 and Romans 3:23 to Matthew 28:20.

Chapter 9: Verse 26-Solomon built ships on the shore of the Red Sea and Hiram sent his sailors who knew the sea. They sailed to Ophir and brought back 16 tons of gold.

Chapter 10: Verses 1-5-the Queen of Sheba came to Solomon and talked to him. Solomon answered all her questions. When the queen saw all the wisdom of Solomon she was overwhelmed. Verses 23-24-King Solomon was greater in riches and wisdom than all the other kings of the earth. The whole world sought audience with Solomon to hear his wisdom.

Chapter 11: Verses 1-4-Solomon loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh’s daughter. But the Lord had said to all of Israel, “You must not intermarry with the nations you have beaten because they will turn your hearts after their gods.” He had seven hundred wives and 3 hundred concubines, and they led him astray. Verses 5-9-Solomon turned his heart after other gods. Verses 31-39-Jeroboam becomes king over 10 tribes of Israel as God deals with Solomon. Verse 40-Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam. Verse 42-Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel for 40 years and he died and was buried in the City of David, and Rehoboam, Solomon’s son, became king in his place.

Chapter 12: Verses 11-14-Rehoboam said, “My father laid on you a heavy yoke, I will make it even heavier. I will scourge you with scorpions, not with whips. Verse 24-the Lord said to Rehoboam, “Do not fight against Israel, go home, every one of you,” so they went home to Judah.

Chapter 13: Verses 4-7-a man of God cried out against Jeroboam’s altar and the altar was split apart and Jeroboam’s hand shriveled up. Then Jeroboam said to the man of God, “Intercede with the Lord for my hand,” and he did. Verses 33-34-the downfall of Jeroboam and the destruction from the earth. He made priests, not God.

Chapter 14: Verses 5-10-Jeroboam’s son is ill and the Lord said to him, “I raised you up to the people of Israel as leader but you have not been like David, you have done evil. You made other gods for your people and provoked me to anger. Because of this I am going to bring disaster on the house of Jeroboam.” Verses 8-9-The Lord said to Jeroboam, “You have not been like my servant David, you have done more evil than all who lived before you. You made yourself other gods.” Verses 10-11-God said, “I will cut off from Jeroboam every last male in Israel.” Verse 12-Jeroboam’s son will die when he enters the city and all Israel will mourn for him. He will be the only one to be buried.

Chapter 15: Verses 1-5-Adijah became King of Judah and he was a prophet. But his heart was not fully devoted to God, but he made Jerusalem strong by God’s leading. The only sin in David was in the case of Uriah. Verse 6-there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all of King Adijah’s lifetime. Verses 8-11-Asa, Adijah’s son, succeeded him and he reigned in Jerusalem 41 years. He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. Verses 25-26-Asa’s son Jehoshaphet succeeded him as King of Judah and Nabad, son of Jeroboam became King of Israel and he did evil in the eyes of the Lord. Verse 32-there was war all that time.

Chapter 16: Verses 1-2-Asa was King of Judah in the third year Baasha became King of all Israel. He reigned 24 years and did evil in the eyes of the Lord. Then the Word of the Lord came to Baasha, “I lifted you up in Israel but you decided to walk in the ways of Jeroboam and doing so you caused my people to sin.” Verses 8-10-in the 26th year of Asa, Baasha’s son, Elah became King of Israel. Then Elah was drunk and Zimri, one of his officials came in and struck him and killed him. This happened in the 27th year of Asa’s kingdom. Verse 12-Zimri destroyed the whole family of Baasha.

Chapter 17: Verse 1-Elijah said to Ahab, “There will be no rain for the next 4 years, except at my word.” Verses 13-16-Elijah said to a woman who didn’t have enough bread for her or her son, “Go home, you will have enough.” (Matthew 19:21) Verses 17-24-some time later her son died and the Lord used Elijah to give him back his life.

Chapter 18: Verse 2-Ahab went to Elijah to see if they could get rain and stop the famine. Verses 27-40-in the meantime, Elijah asked God to do a miracle. He filled jars of water and poured them on the offering and the wood. He did this three times then Elijah prayed to the Lord and God made fire come on the offering and burned it up. Then all the people said, “The Lord is God.” Verse 45-afterward sky grew black and a heavy rain came down.

Chapter 19: Verses 3-9-Jezebel said to Elijah, “By this time tomorrow you will die.” So Elijah ran for his life. Then he prayed to the Lord that he might die. He did not die. He went into a cave and spent the night. Verses 11-13-the Lord past by Elijah by a wind, an earthquake, a fire and then said, “What are you doing here Elijah?” Then he heard a whisper (a small voice). Verse 18-God reserves 7,000 who did not bow to Baal.

Chapter 20: Verses 1-14-Ben Hadad threatens Ahab to besiege Samaria, but Ahab said, “I will give you what you need.” But Ben Hadad said, “I will take it.” Then Ahab said in verse 11, “One who puts on his armor should not boast like one who takes it off.” Then the Lord said to Ahab, “Do you see this vast army of Ben Hadad, I will give it into your hand today.” Verse 43-the King of Israel goes to Samaria.

Chapter 21: Verses 6-7-”Ahab, why are you so sullen?” his wife Jezebel said. He answered, “Because Naboth would not sell me his vineyard.” Jezebel said, “Is this how you act as King over Israel?” Verse 28-Ahab fasted before the Lord and the Lord came to Elijah and said, “Ahab has humbled himself before me so I will forgive him.”

Chapter 22: Verses 1-5-the King of Israel asked Jehoshaphat, “Will you fight against Ramoth Gilead with me?” Jehoshaphat said, “First you must seek the counsel of God.” Verse 12-all the prophets were saying, “Attack Romath Gilead.” Verse 14-but Michiah said “Yes go attack and be victorious.” Verses 34-40-someone drew a bow and hit King Ahab and he died and Ahaziah succeeded his father as king. Verses 41-45-Jehoshaphat did what was right in God’s eyes for 25 years.

II KINGS

Chapter 1: Verses 1-8-Ahaziah, Ahab’s son, is now king. One day he had fallen through the upper room in Samaria and injured himself. He sent messengers to the gods of Baal for help. But the angel of the Lord said, “Is there no God in Israel that you don’t go to Him?” The angel said, “You will not leave your bed, you certainly will die.” Verse 9-the king sent a captain and 50 men to Elijah and Elijah said, “If I am a man of God may fire come down and consume you.” It did! It happened 2 times and after all this King Ahaziah died without sons, so Jehoram succeeded him as king.

Chapter 2: Verses 2-9-Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, the Lord is sending me to Bethel.” But Elisha said, “I will not leave you.” So they went to Bethel together. Then Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here I am going to the Lord in Jericho.” But again Elisha would not leave him and they both went to Jericho. Then Elijah struck the water the third time (Ex. 14:21,22, Joshua 3:17) of the Jordan and the two of them crossed over on dry ground. Verses 11-15-as the two of them were walking along, suddenly a chariot of fire separated Elijah from Elisha and took Elijah up to heaven and Elisha saw Elijah no more. The prophets of Jericho who were watching Elisha went to meet him and bowed before him (verse 11 is where Elijah went up).

Chapter 3: Verses 1-3-Joram, son of Ahab, became King of Israel. He reigned 20 years and did evil. Verses 15-19-a harpist came to Elisha and as she played the hand of the Lord came to Elisha and said, “Make this valley full of ditches. You will not see rain, yet this valley will be filled with water. This is easy for the Lord, and the Lord will also hand Moab over to you.” Chapter 4: Verses 1-7-a woman goes to Elisha for help. She said to him, “My husband is dead. He love the Lord and his creditors are coming to take my sons.” Elisha supplied her with oil to sell and to live on what was left. Verses 8-38-a boy is brought back to life by Elisha. Verses 42-44-100 men were given 20 loaves of bread and he said, “It is enough.” They ate and had some left over (Mark 8:1-8).

Chapter 5: Verses 1-6-Naaman was commander of the army. He was a great man and a valiant soldier, but he had leprosy. His wife said to mistress, “A prophet in Samaria can cure him of the leprosy.” So he went to the King and the King of Syria sent a letter with him to the King of Israel. Verses 7-14-Elisha said, “Am I God? Why does she send him to me?” Then Elisha said, “Have the man come to me.” So Naaman went to Elisha and was healed. Verse 15-Naaman said, “Please accept a gift for this.” Elisha said, “No,” but Gehazi did and was made leprous.

Chapter 6: Verses 1-4-the prophets said to Elisha, “This place where we meet is to small, let us go to Jordan, and let us build there.” Elisha said, “Yes.” So they went and began cutting down trees to build. Verses 5-7-at that time an iron axe head fell into the water-it was borrowed. Elisha said, “Where did it fall,” and Elisha made the iron float on the water. Then the man reached out and took it in his hand. Verses 16-17-Elisha said, “Don’t be afraid, the army with us are more than those who are with them.” Verse 28 -29 A woman wanted to give their son to be eaten.

Chapter 7: Verses 10-20-the man of God said, “The price of flour and the price of barley would be sold at a price it was before.” Chapter 8: Verses 7-15-Ben-Hadad was ill and Elisha went to him. Ben-hadad sent Hazael to meet Elisha. When he met him he asked if he will recover. Elisha said, “Yes,” but Elisha began to weep, knowing Hazael would become king and do evil things. Verse 19-for the sake of His servant David, the Lord was not willing to destroy Judah. God had promised to maintain David and his descendants forever (Matthew 1:5-25-from David to Jesus).

Chapter 9: Verses 1-6-Elisha summoned a man from the prophets. He said, “Take some oil in your belt and go to Ramoth Gilead and look for Jehu. He is the son of Jehoshaphat. Get him away from his companions, then take the oil and pour it on his head and say, ‘this is what the Lord says, you are King of Israel.’” Verses 8-37-the Lord said to Jehu, “I will cut off Ahab’s family from Israel.” Also. Jezebel’s flesh will be eaten.

Chapter 10: Verse 6-Jehu wrote a letter to Ahab’s son and said, “If you are on my side and will obey me, come to me in Jezerel.” Verse 10-who killed all these sons of Ahab? Verses 17-18-God, in His word to Elijah, did what needed to be done in Ahab’s family. Then Jehu said to all the people, “Ahab served Baal a little, Jehu will serve Baal much.” Verses 25-28-then Jehu destroyed all Baal worshippers. Verses 30-37-the Lord said to Jehu, “You are not careful to keep the law, for you did not turn away from the sins of Jerobaom.” The time of Jehu’s reign over Israel in Samaria was 28 years.

Chapter 11: Verses 1-2-Joash was to hide in Athaliah’s care so he was not killed. Verse 21-at 7 years old, Joash began to reign as king. Then King Joash repairs the temple.

Chapter 12: Verses 9-12-the way Jehoiada got the money for the temple, he took a chest and laid it beside the altar. The priest who guarded the temple took the large amounts of money in the chest and put it into bags. When it was needed they got it to the workers. Verses 14-15-it was paid to the workmen who used it to repair the temple. The workers acted with complete honesty (the money was for the work only).

Chapter 13: Verses 1-4-Joash reigned 17 years in Israel, then Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, became king. Verse 20-Elisha died and was buried.

Chapter 14: Verse 13-Jehoash, King of Israel, captured Amaziah, King of Judah, the son of Joash. Then Jehoash went to Jerusalem and broke down the wall from Ephraim gate to the corner gate. It was a section about 600 feet long. Verse 25b-in accordance with the Word of the Lord God spoken through his servant Jonah (Jonah 1:1).

Chapter 15: Verses 1-2-Azariah, King of Jerusalem, was 16 years old when he became king. He reigned 52 years. Verse 5-he was afflicted with leprosy until he died. Verse 13-Shallum became king. He reigned 1 month. He was assassinated by Jabesh who succeeded him as king.
(Chapters 14-15-kings were assassinated for over 100 years)

Chapter 16: Verses 1-4-Ahaz came to be king. He did not do what was right before God. He sacrificed his son in the fire-doing the detestable things of the nations the Lord had driven out before.

Chapter 17: Verses 1-8-Samaria was full of bad kings in Israel. Elah became king in Samaria and did evil in the eyes of the Lord. What they did is worshipped other gods. Verses 12-13-the Lord said, “You shall not do this.” The Lord warned Israel and Judah through all His prophets. Verse 17-Israel got so bad that they sacrificed their sons and daughters in the fire. They provoked God to anger. Verses 21-23-then they made Jeroboam their king, and he enticed Israel away from the Lord, and caused them to commit great sin. So Israel was taken into exile in Assyria. Verse 24-the King of Assyria brought people from Babylon and other places and settled them in Samaria to replace the Israelites (John 4:4-26). Verses 37-38-the command of God to Israel is do not worship other gods, worship the Lord God.

Chapter 18: Verses 1-4-Hezekiah, at 25 years old, became King in Jerusalem. He reigned 29 years. He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, just as his father David had, and he removed the high places and cut down the Asherah poles.

Chapter 19: Verses 19-32-the gods of the Assyrians are not gods, but wood and stone fashioned by men, so Lord deliver us from them so that all the earth may know that you alone are God. Verses 33-37-the Lord said to Hezekiah, “By the way the Assyrians came is the way they will return. I, the Lord, will defend this city. I will do it for my sake and for the sake of David, my servant.”

Chapter 20: Verses 1-6-Hezekiah is going to die so he prayed to the Lord. The Lord heard his prayer and gave him 15 years added to his life.

Chapter 21: Verses 1-6-Hezekiah’s son was 12 years old and he became king. He reigned in Jerusalem 55 years and he did evil in God’s eyes. He rebuilt the high places and he erected altars to Baal and made an Asherah pole. He also sacrificed his own son in the fire. Verse 9-Manasseh did more evil than the nations the Lord destroyed before the Israelites. Verses 19-26-Manasseh’s son, Amon, was 22 years old when he became king. He to did evil as his father did. He was assassinated by his officials. They made his son king. His name was Josiah.

Chapter 22: Verses 1-2-Josiah was 8 years old. His reign was 21 years. Josiah did what was right in God’s eyes.

Chapter 23: Verse 3-Josiah read the book of the covenant and said, “We will follow what it says.” Then all the people did it. Verses 4-20-Josiah destroyed all the evil in the land of Israel. Verses 21-22-the king gave this order to all the people to celebrate the Passover to the Lord. This had not been kept for many years. This took place in the 18th year of Josiah’s kingdom. Verse 25-Josiah turned to the Lord with all his heart and soul and strength (Exodus 20:1-17).

Chapter 24: Verses 10-11-Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, laid siege on Jerusalem and Jehoiachin, King of Judah surrendered to Nebuchadnezzar. Verses 18-20-Zedekiah was 21 years old when he became King of Jerusalem and he did evil in God’s eyes.

Chapter 25: Verse 7-the King of Babylon killed Zedekiah’s son in front of his father. Then they put out Zedekiah’s eyes, bound him and took him to Babylon. Verse 26-in time all the people from the least to the greatest, with army officers, fled to Egypt for fear of the Babylonians. Verses 29-30-Jehoiachin, King of Judah, put aside his prison clothes and for the rest of his life he ate regularly at the king’s table and the king gave him an allowance as long as he lived.
