Saviour`s Home
Street Ministry
Homelessness is a rampant problem for children in Ukraine. Since gaining its independence from the former Soviet Union in 1991, Ukraine has struggled economically, with 29 percent of the population currently living below the poverty line, according to the Central Intelligence Agency's World Factbook.
Currently "Savior`s Home" apply the effort to work with the homeless children in Kiev, Ukraine. Children as young as four years old live on the street alone. Many of these children have been abandoned by their parents. Some have run away from orphanages so horrible that life on the street is seen as a better alternative. Every year, approximately one half of the homeless children in Kiev die from hunger, exposure to the elements, disease and violent crime. In 2001, the Ukrainian government registered about 250 homeless children in Kiev. But these figures do not meet to reality. On the informal data in Kiev about 2000 homeless children.
Currently there is no consistent, safe place for street children to go to find food, shelter or clothing. They survive by scrounging food from garbage cans, begging and stealing. If they are lucky, they might find a warm corner of a railway station to sleep. Many sneak into basements or attics to escape the cold. A few even sleep on rooftops, since the heat from inside rises. Most are forced to sleep outdoors, doing whatever they can to shield themselves from the elements.
Some of the children (from 8-16 yo) allowed us to see where they live. It is a crawl space beneath an apartment building. To get in, you have to crawl through an opening about 2 feet wide, feel your wayover and under concrete, water pipes and sewer pipes. There is no light. There is not enough room to stand up in most places. There is raw sewage on the bare earth floor. There are holes in the outside wall that lets in the cold air. About 6-8 kids live in there.
I'm really not sure how many. They keep warm under filthy sleeping bags and blankets and by huddling together.
The youth team of "Saviour`s Home" bought simple food to give to street children, then went out in the streets. We provided bread, condensed milk and little sausage. This meager meal was received as if it were the finest cuisine a restaurant had to offer. Even more than the food, the team shared the love of Christ with these kids.
