Buffalo Jim was born on a summer day, June 30, 1937, in Kansas City, KS. His mom had twins that day and he had a twin brother born, just a few minutes 'fore him. They named him William (Bill).

Their mom was a homemaker and their dad worked at the Kansas City, MO stock yards. Buffalo Jim and Bill's dad had been a former professional boxer and former rodeo performer. He was very stout!

A few years later, they moved to a farm in Louisburg, KS and they all pitched in and help run a 400 acre farm for their dad's new boss. They raised beef cattle, hogs, horses, goats, chickens, ducks and raised different species of fish in many huge ponds on the property. In 3 of the larger ponds close to the road, there was a spring that ran through them. So they got to have trout in those ponds.

When the young men were 17, Bill and Buffalo Jim joined the US Coast Guard, with their dad signin' for them.
