What's It Like at Salem?
![]() Salem's pastor is Bryan Catlin, who with his wife and daughters, lives in nearby Castorland. Our congregation is made up of mainly blue-collar people who come not just for the warm fellowship. It's a place where you can feel the joy and presence of our Lord. At Salem we strive to glorify God, to mature in Christ, to minister in love to the needs of our neighbors, to evangelize our community and support missions which spread the Good News through the world, and to fellowship and support each another as one body so that God’s light will shine through us in the community and wherever His path leads us. As Jesus said, "Come and see!" Membership is open to all who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Saviour and are willing to serve the Lord through involvement in the Church. Our Community Beaver Falls is in northern Lewis County, NY, the heart of dairy farming country. This serene and peaceful hamlet was established on then prosperous lumber and paper making industry. Those mills were dependent on the Beaver River, which runs through the hamlet, for power and transportation in those days. Beaver Falls is the home of the local public school Beaver River Central School. It educates children from kindergarten through grade twelve, a student population of about 1000 in one building. The small class sizes and personal relationships between faculty and students create a comfortable and productive learning environment. The school is well known for its academic excellence. Its alma mater tells of its picturesque locale: "There's a land of rushing water where once a forest grew, and the dark trees trail their branches in the river's dusky hew." Beaver Falls hosts two other churches; Beaver Falls United Methodist Church and New Life Fellowship. In the nearby village of Croghan you will find a Catholic Church and two Conservative Mennonite churches. Throughout the history of the township of Croghan this diversity has maintained good relationships amongst neighbors. Salem enjoys a close relationship with all of them. There is also to be found here Beaver Falls Post Office 13305, Beaver Falls Mini Mart, Beaver Falls Public Library, Beaver River Health Center (office of family physician and dentist), Lena's Reality, Beaverite Products factory, a small beach with lifeguard, a playground, and Beaver Falls Volunteer Fire Department. Our local weekly newspaper is the Journal and Republican out of nearby Lowville, the county seat. About 15 minutes away, Lowville also has the nearest hospital, Lewis County General Hospital and Lewis County Chamber of Commerce. We are approximately 45 minutes from Watertown, which boasts of the nearest mall. Ocasionally we hear a little rumble from Ft. Drum military base. It reminds us to be thankful for those soldiers protecting our freedom, especially our freedom to worship. The closest auto service station, florist, funeral homes, diners, pizzeria, hardware store, grocery stores, dollar store, gift shop, bank, and ball diamond are in nearby Croghan, about 5 minutes away. This quaint village along the Black River Trail, is best known for Croghan Bologna, The Croghan Candy Kitchen, and E.M. Marilley & Co. (est. 1874). It also has two museums, The American Maple Museum and the Railway Historical Society of Northern New York. In this rural setting we also enjoy a generous supply of lake effect snow coming off Lake Ontario. It gets real deep in nearby Tug Hill! Many residents like to ski at Snow Ridge. Temperatures occasionally dip to 30* below zero, when the air prickles your nose, the snow squeaks with every step, and the frost makes lacy designs on the window panes! ![]() |
