THE SHIELD OF SAUL

Bible Reading:
2 Samuel 1: 17-27

Text verse:
2 Samuel 1:21 KJV
Ye mountains of Gilboa,
let there be no dew, neither let there be rain,
upon you, nor fields of offerings:
for there the shield of the mighty
is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul,
as though he had not been anointed with oil.

It must always be remembered that we have
a translation of the Word of God.
To really study the Word of God we need to
compare translations.
This is especially true of our Text verse today!

Let compare Translations:
2 Samuel 1:21 Darby
Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew,
no rain upon you, nor fields of heave-offerings!
For there the shield of the mighty was vilely cast away,
The shield of Saul, as not anointed with oil.

2 Samuel 1:21 ASV
Ye mountains of Gilboa,
Let there be no dew nor rain upon you,
neither fields of offerings:
For there the shield of the mighty was vilely cast away,
The shield of Saul, not anointed with oil.

The Living Bible says:
The Shield of Saul will no longer
be anointed with oil.

Today, I want us to examine the meaning of the words:
The Shield of Saul – anointed with oil!

The anointing of the Shield is only mentioned in one other
passage of Scripture:
Isaiah 21:5 KJV
Prepare the table, watch in the watchtower,
eat, drink: arise, ye princes, and anoint the shield.

BUT FIRST
Before we examine the anointing of the Shield
and its importance, I want us to stand still for at moment
at another text in our Bible Reading!

Saul was dead!
Saul the King of Israel had been killed in battle.
David sends out the following message:

2 Samuel 1:20 KJV
Tell it not in Gath, publish it not
in the streets of Askelon;
lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice,
lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

Once I was invited to speak at a House Meeting.
For some reason I was lead to speak on this Scripture verse.
It was the first time that I had been invited
and all present except the person who invited me
were strangers to me!

How was I to know that they had a problem
with gossiping? Tell it not I stressed!
Lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice!
They never ever invited me again to speak to
their group!

Friends, it must be said:
Tell it not! Cease gossiping!
Don’t broadcast the faults and sins
of Fellow Believers.
It only harms the Work of God!
And the devil rejoices!
Rather pray for them!

SHINE OR POLISH THE SHIELD
Listen to our Text verse in the CEV Bible:
2 Samuel 1:21 CEV
Don't let dew or rain fall on the hills of Gilboa.
Don't let its fields grow offerings for God.
There the warriors' shields were smeared with mud,
and Saul's own shield was left unpolished.

Shield left unpolished!
Some Bible Commentators say that the words
anoint the Shield means to polish or shield the shield!

This could not be true because most shields
were not made of metal but rather of wood
in Bible Times.
Those shields that were made of metal were
made of a soft type of metal and thus dull in colour!

A shiny or polished shield would not help you
in a battle but an anointed shield would!

Catching a shine!
Polishing up your image!
Shine yourself all you want to -
It is not your outward appearance!
It is not your new look!
The way you look!
It is not a shiny New Bible!
That will protect you from the attack of the enemy!
Only an anointed Shield will protect you from the enemy!

ANOINTED SHIELDS
But Pastor what does it mean to have an anointed shield?
Let me explain.
Before going into any battle or facing the enemy!
A Sacrifice was made of a lamb!
A sacrifice for sin!

But something interesting:
Leviticus 7:8 KJV
And the priest that offereth any man's burnt offering,
even the priest shall have to himself the skin
of the burnt offering which he hath offered.

The Skin of the Lamb was not burnt!
It was kept by the Priest!
Why?
It was proof that an offering for sin had been made!

We know also that the spears and shields were kept
by the Priests!
2 Kings 11:10 KJV
And to the captains over hundreds did the priest
give king David's spears and shields,
that were in the temple of the LORD.

Why – the answer is simple!
Remember most shields were made of Wood!
Everyman’s shield would be covered with the skin
of the Lamb with the fleece on the inside as proof
that his sins were forgiven should he die in battle!
But the Skin would become dry and useless
in the hot sun, an arrow or spear would easily penetrate it.
For this reason the Shield was anointed with oil!
The oil made the leather more supple and impenetrable.
The arrows and the spears of the enemy
would bounce off the Shield!
It was also a symbol of the anointing of God!
The Oil was a Symbol of God’s Holy Spirit!

SHIELD OF FAITH
Paul tells us:
Ephesians 6:16 KJV
Above all, taking the shield of faith,
wherewith ye shall be able to quench
all the fiery darts of the wicked.

Have you put on the armour of God?
Taken up the Shield of Faith?
Friend, the devil may come against you
but if you are standing behind the Shield
of Faith he cannot harm you!

The Shield of Faith is covered by the Blood of the Lamb
and protected by the anointing of the Holy Spirit!

NO LONGER ANOINTED
But now we read:
2 Samuel 1:21 (NLT)
O mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew
or rain upon you or your slopes.
For there the shield of the mighty was defiled;
the shield of Saul will no longer be anointed with oil.

2 Samuel 1:21 (NRSV)
You mountains of Gilboa, there be no dew
or rain upon you, nor bounteous fields!
For there the shield of the mighty was defiled,
the shield of Saul, anointed with oil no more.

Friend, Saul perished on the Battlefield!
His Shield would no longer be anointed with oil!

We need to remember:
Hebrews 9:27 KJV
And as it is appointed unto men
once to die, but after this the judgment.

What will happen in that day?
The day we perish on the Battlefield of life?

If our Shield was not covered
with the Skin of the Lamb
and our sins were not washed away
by the Blood of the Lamb,
If we failed, to anoint our Shield with the oil
of the Holy Spirit?
Where would we spend eternity?

How can we received the anointing of the Holy Spirit?
Acts 2:37-39 KJV
Now when they heard this,
they were pricked in their heart,
and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles,
Men and brethren, what shall we do?
Then Peter said unto them,
Repent, and be baptized every one of you
in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins,
and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
For the promise is unto you,
and to your children, and to all that are afar off,
even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Amen
