Egg Drop Contest ![]() Materials: LEGAL: Large,fresh, raw, white chicken eggs; paper tape, transparent tape, masking tape, scotch tape. ILLEGAL: "Treated" or hard-boiled eggs. Rotten eggs. No duct tape, reinforced tape, or shipping tape will be allowed inside or outside the container. The container may not include peanut butter, jell-o, liquids, or any other substance that will splatter, fruits, or vegetables (popcorn is okay), powdered soap, flammable substances of any kind or glass. Any aerodynamic or restraining devices of any kind (ie. parachutes). Any substance which may cause harm to a person or school property. RULES: 1. Students must design and construct a container. Commercially constructed containers will not be legal. 2. Eggs may not be "treated" in any manner. 3. Only one container per student. 4. No dimension of a container shall measure more than 14 inches. THE CONTAINER (WITH EGGS) MUST PASS THROUGH A 14 INCH DIAMETER RIGID HOOP WHEN TURNED AT ALL ANGLES, INCLUDING DIAGONALS. 5. All entries must be clearly labeled with name, number of eggs within container, and any special instructions regarding, for example how to drop the container. 6. The container, with eggs, will be released by an impartial party from a designated height. SPECIFICATION CHECK 1. Immediately upon submission for competition, the containers receive a specification check to determine whether it conforms to dimensions, materials, and construction rules. Any container which fails the specification check will be disqualified. 2. Judges may disqualify any entry if, in their opinion, the dropping of the container might create a safety hazard for spectators or property. 3. Container is weighed and its weight recorded. JUDGING 1. Containers and eggs will be inspected after the drop. Surviving eggs will be broken to insure that they are fresh and have not been hard-boiled. 2. Container with greatest number of surviving eggs will be declared the winner (e.g. 4 eggs beats 3, 2 eggs beat 1, etc.). Cracked eggs are not considered to have survived. If there is a tie among containers with the most surviving eggs, the entry with the highest survival ratio wins. Survival Ratio=number of surviving eggs divided by total eggs in container. (e.g. 3 out of 4 eggs beats 3 out of 5 eggs; 10 out of 10 eggs beats 10 out of 11 eggs). If a tie still exists after calculating survival ratio, the lightest container shall win.
