MR ANCIENT
![]() ©1987 Vickey Stamps Once upon a time in a place called Despair lived one named Hurt. His nearest and dearest neighbor was called Depression. Just down the road near the corner of Agony and Defeat lived Mr. Ancient. Mr. Ancient was as wise in wisdom as he was long in years. Many a street had he traveled. Many had names such as those he now lived just on the edge of. His heart was troubled daily. It was not because of being so near to Agony and Defeat, but because try as he might, he seemed unable to be of comfort to Mr. Hurt and Depression. So intent were they on not only living up to their names, but associating with others out to harm named Gossip, Envy and Destruction. Being far too knowledgeable of the world and its wiles to fall for values sown in sand; he pondered over how he might rezone this area. Surely there was a way to reconstruct and beautify it. Maybe he could even get the streets and the name of the town changed. Perhaps if he could change the environment, he might also be able to change the lives of its inhabitants. ‘No time like the present’ had long been his motto. He began to work. Out went the crabgrass in the near by park. Hedge clippers busily clicked and clacked in eagerness to cast away shadows caused by long overgrown dehydrated brownish hedges. Waters of life swam in and out through the thirsty soil. Flowers crept forth hesitantly at first and then eagerly upward in places they had never been seen before. Squirrels pranced along branches of treetops. Their busy tails wagged upright in delight at the changes all around them. Mr.Sun swept nearer. It was able at last to socialize with its family Gentle Breezes and Approaching Dusk. Soon its cousins, Twinkling Stars and Full Moons would put in an appearance as Mr. Sun rested for another day yet to come. Birds sang and children laughed. Adults smiled for no obvious reason. Before you would have believed it, along came Mr. Hurt and Depression with their suitcases in hand. They were burdened down with their lives belongings. With tears in their woeful appearing eyes they related how they had been evicted. No longer could such streets as Agony and Defeat be allowed as a part of the beauty that now existed. Well now~~Mr. Ancient had just the answer for them. For much less then the price life had enforced on them, they could rent a luxurious room from Mr. And Mrs. Health and Happiness. Those folks would be more than glad to have them. Perhaps with a bit of love and gladness for dessert on frequent occasions, they might be willing to change their current names for something more appropriate to their new station in life. Yes, they were quick to agree, with a hint of a smile upon their faces, that was indeed a strong possibility. Again was heard the sound of children laughing and birds singing. Mr. Ancient cast a glance of luminous radiance toward the heavens as he whispered in a voice only God was intended to hear “Thank you!” ![]()
