MY CHILD SHALL CROSS THIS BRIDGE
My Child Shall Cross This Bridge

A great engineer, rich beyond measure and owing of no debt to any man, summoned together all his assistants for a mighty project. His child was due to meet him. A bridge must be built for Him to do so. The assistants were sent to places all over the world to seek out materials that this project might be built. It would be one that must remain durable for a period of great time. It had to be built with all possible safety features. What more could the Great Engineer do beyond this? He was separated from the child but He knew the separation would not last forever, and so He prepared now for the journey of the child.

"Why build a bridge?" some asked. "We could build a train path around and through everything. It would be a super structure. The child would only have to board and could ride inside in comfort. There would be no effort to reach its destination, no tired feet, no hunger when places with food were not available. We'd have the finest of restaurants within and employee's to meet every need. Surely Your Child deserves no less then this!" The Great Engineer was saddened. His assistants did not understand. Sadly He wrote out their termination papers and paid out the severance pay due them.

The supplies began to come in. Strong planks of wood were dove tailed together and reinforced with yet another thickness and then another, should one fail in any way. Toe holds were there if needed with sturdy rails beside the sidings should the child need support.

Soon came another group of assistants. "Boss, why not have us build the Child a plane? We have the ability to make a plane far stronger and better then any on the face of the earth. The Child climbs a few simple steps and can be with You in no time at all." These assistants also received their severance pay and termination papers. They simply did not understand the plan of the Great Engineer. Nothing could replace His blueprints. They must be followed without exception. From time to time other assistant engineers came, each with what they considered a superior plan. They, as with the others, met the fate of the assistants before them.

Slowly the triple planks of material began to be fitted into place. Below the structure raged the currents, varied but strong in nature. However, they became stronger each day. The assistants had not felt them in the beginning building of the bridge. If any had done so and tried to cross over them, they would have been swept away. The currents leaped upward often in an effort to undo the structure, hating its shadow over them.

While the structure now felt its force, it remained safe and sturdy. It was not a thing of beauty that a passerby would want a picture of. It loomed upward in an arch, bulky and ugly. One might describe its function as 'a means to an end.' Largely it was ignored and so the work progresserd as it would, with little impediment on the part of the world.

The assistants drove their crews to the point of exhaustion at times for the deadline was drawing near. Not quite half of the structure was completed. The currents had gained in strength and rammed each moment of the day against the strong supportive pillars beneath the upper planks. They raged and roared and applied all they had within them to dislodge it. It continued to hold fast. The day was near for the Child to cross the bridge.

The day at last came. In the distance were heard voices. How could this be? Only a child was expected and even now since the bridge was not finshed, He also must be made to wait. The remaining assistants ran quickly to the home of the Great Engineer who had refused to leave the building site until the work was complete. "Boss, listen! A crowd approaches. Perhaps we should go to them and warn them away. Why would they come this way except to use the bridge? It is now only half done. It is not to be for use yet."

The Great Engineer, had you and I been able to see Him sighed and looked sadly at His crew of assistants. He again wrote out letters of termination and gave them severance pay. Having done so He went one last time to the beginning of the half finished bridge. He stepped upon the planks and began to cross. Behind him the voices grew louder and louder. The volume nearly matched that of the currents under the great structure.

Just ahead of them walked a Child, head high and with a carriage of expectancy about him. His face bore a peaceful look. Centering His gait upon the bridge He too began to cross. Others followed one by one and two by twos and then in great crowds they came.

There were those who gripped the rails and circled the waist of the person beside them, to ease the trip across. There were those with canes, walkers and wheelchairs. There were young and old adults and Mothers and Fathers with or without children. There were grandparents who held babies as well as the hands of children, as they made their way across. There were some so weak they could not walk, but arm over arm they would grip at the toe holds in the bridge and pull them self along. There were the strong ones, who, seeing this, would reach down saying 'Come old Father(or was it old Mother, sister or brother?) Let us help you along the path. Our shoulders are strong. We can help you cross' ~~ and so they did. There were none to be left behind who had struggled to reach this bridge of safety. There were none who had lost their faith.

As they neared the middle of the bridge it seemed as if health and safety had been restored to each and all by some mysterious force. The youngest of the children became strong young adults and the old ones became the same. The ill were unaware they ever had been sick. All were as one. Happiness held them as their numbers, now in the millions, placed their weight upon the midpoint of this bridge. They did not see it as something half finished as had the Great Engineers assistants; but saw now the downhill sloping completion of it. It was paved in precious jewels with gold and silver to smooth the way for those soon to step out upon it.

In a distant but soon to be seen area, barely beyond the end of the bridge, could be heard what must be the singing of angels. In front and as if to greet the surging crowd was a throne. It was whiter far than any painters brush could have ever produced. On the throne sat the child who had led the way.

Had we been above the bridge, we could have seen it was designed with a partial cover looking not unlike a lowly manger. It progressed to a more open structure that was in looks that of a cross. The bottom of the cross met the very midpoint of the bridge. From higher clouds that were sprinkled in glorious multi colored hues came the voice of the Greatest Engineer of all time. He was heard to say "This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased." (and so~~as was written 'A little Child shall lead them.')
