What is a homestudy and why do I need one? A homestudy is a first step toward adoption or becoming a foster parent. The orphanage directors usually choose children who they believe want to be part of a family and can adapt happily to this change. What are the children told about their visit? It depends on what the orphanage workers tell them. Most programs try to simply express to the child that they have been chosen to go on a special trip. Some children don't know they are going to stay with a family until they arrive. What do they bring with them? Usually only a little back pack. They have to be able to carry everything themselves.(Both ways.) Be prepared to get them underwear, good sneakers and a bathing suit. You will learn more during your orientation. How long do they stay? Usually 2-4 weeks, it depends on the program. Aren't language differences a problem? Read "Language Differences: Fun or Frustration?" Why do the children have to return? Can they just stay here if I want to adopt them? It is better for all the children to return together. International adoption requires quite a bit of paperwork. If you are adopting from a country like Ukraine, you are required to make one-two trips. Usually because the child has visited you here, that counts as one of the trips. After you finish your dossier, you make only one trip to finalize the adoption in the child's home country. ![]() |
