A FRESH START #1-6 ![]() <><><><><><><><><><><><><> ON THIS PAGEINTRODUCTION#1 MOCKING INNOCENCE #2 FAITH AND WORKS #3 A JOINT VENTURE #4 PROVERBS 4:20-27 #5 GUARD THE EYES #6 GUARD THE EARS INTRODUCTIONThis is a series of short messages on getting a new start. We all need a FRESH START from time to time. I was always glad to hear my teacher say, "Let's start with a clean slate." In earlier generations they actually did their lessons on slates, and a clean slate meant erasing the previous work and starting over. In my generation the phrase had come to mean, "Erasing the past mistakes and starting anew." As I said, I was always glad to hear my teacher say, "Let's start with a clean slate." We all need a FRESH START from time to time. These messages were written at the beginning of 2003, but they can be applied whenever we are getting a fresh start; in our relationship with our spouse, children, parents, friends, and God. It can happen at the beginning of the calendar year, the school year, the coming of summer, at a wedding, birthdays, anniversaries or any time. BACK TO TOP <><><><><><><><><><><><><> #1 MOCKING INNOCENCEI would like to share some thoughts with you as we prepare to turn a new leaf in our lives. I will use the lines from a popular childrens song to guide our thinking. Before I get into the specifics however, I would like to reflect briefly on America's blatant rejection of innocence and purity. As children we were taught a song in Sunday School with verses which told us; ---------------------------------------------------------- vs... Oh be careful little eyes what you see, vs... Oh be careful little ears what you hear, vs... Oh be careful little hands what you do, vs... Oh be careful little feet where you go, vs... Oh be careful little mouth what you say, vs... Oh be careful little mind what you think, ---------------------------------------------------------- After singing each verse we would sing; ---------------------------------------------------------- For the Father up above, Is looking down in love, So be careful little........ ---------------------------------------------------------- I still sing that song occasionally. Often I will sing to my grandchildren the theme from Barney, I LOVE YOU... ---------------------------------------------------------- I love you...you love me, Were a happy family, With a great big hug and a kiss from me to you, Won't you say you love me too? ---------------------------------------------------------- When my firstborn came along I would join Mr. Rogers in singing, IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY... ---------------------------------------------------------- It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood and, It's Such a Good Feeling...To Know You're Alive ---------------------------------------------------------- When I was a child I would sing with Roy and Dale, HAPPY TRAILS... ---------------------------------------------------------- Happy Trails to You...Until We Meet Again ---------------------------------------------------------- And when I was really young, I would join with Pinky Lee in singing about the, TWO IMPORTANT LITTLE WORDS... ---------------------------------------------------------- Two Important Little Words...Please and Thank You ---------------------------------------------------------- I know it is popular to bash these sentiments and those who promote them, so I may have already lost some of my readers at this point. I also know people want to attack the Big Purple Dinosaur, the Quiet Little Man, Cowboys and Cowgirls (especially those who wear white hats and don't cuss at you..."Pil-grum." And you better be one tough hombre if you say that you were a Pinky Lee fan. BE CONSISTENT I find it interesting that people will display such antagonism and disgust toward characters who were designed to communicate traditional values to children: characters who did no harm to anyone, did not insult anyone, did not use bad language, drugs, violence, sex or prejudice. While these same critics are fans of programs which promote homosexuality, disrespect for parents and females, disobedience to legitimate authority and rejection of Christianity and Its belief system. Vulgarity and violence are in vogue. Promiscuity and perversion are the popular pass-times fare for oldsters and youngsters today. I think this tells us more about our society and its real values than they want to admit. These same people will listen to "music" which defames females; promotes violence, hatred, racism, drugs, rape, anarchy; promotes vulgarity, profanity and perversion. Yet at the same time they demean those programs and people which have tried to lift us up. I am not offering an endorsement for all of those behind the programs, but why "throw out the baby with the bath water?" To find fault with some of those who produced and presented these programs is a cop out. It is just another attempt to excuse insensitivity, crude-ness, political correctness gone rampant. THE REAL REASON People want to attack those who lift up love, kindness, gentleness, honesty, sensitivity and fairness. It is easier to attack the polite and peaceful characters who embody these wholesome traits than it is to attack the traits themselves. In attacking those who represent these traits, a person is able to justify his own lack of high standards. Cruelty, rudeness, prejudice, hatred, deceit and selfishness don't look as bad if everyone is practicing them; and the higher standards are not as attractive if we can turn popular opinion against the ones who promote them. Our world has gone haywire and it is easier to go with the crowd than to stand alone. People laugh when I sing these songs (and I do still sing these songs) but then they wonder why they can't seem to live the Christian life. They fill themselves with negative attitudes toward that which is good and they open themselves to that which is detrimental and then wonder why they can't be consistent in their walk with Jesus. JESUS WOULD BE MOCKED TODAY If Jesus were physically living amongst us today and if He had a TV program, people would be mocking Him. Jesus would be considered a wimp because He would be living and proclaiming the traits of godliness. BE A REAL MAN Somehow we have adopted images of crude, vulgar, mean, violent and abusive men as being real men. Being a Christian is not a matter of being a wimp or a sissy, it is a matter of being like Jesus, which is what people do not like. Christ-like traits in us condemn the un-Christ like traits in others. Men should be men, but they should be men in the likeness of Jesus. He was no cowardly, effeminate, limp wrist, lace wearing sissy. He was a man. But He was a man of love, peace, kindness, gentleness, sensitivity. He was afraid of no man, no devil, no system. We should be men like Jesus was a man. It is not a matter of men "getting in touch with their feminine side." It is a matter of all of us being conformed to the image of Jesus. A man, a real man, does not need a gun in order to take a stand, he does not need to find his courage in a bottle, he does not need to express his manhood in vulgar and demeaning words, he does not need to prove his masculinity by sexual conquests. A man, a real man lives in the power and holiness of God. This probably explains why there are so few men, real men in our society. BACK TO TOP <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> #2 FAITH AND WORKSBASICSIn the world of sports there are three premises upon which all great teams are built. Basics, Basics, Basics. Teams which do not have "super stars" may still attain to extraordinary heights if they learn and practice the Basics. Teams with "super stars" may not reach play-off status if they fail to observe the Basics. This is true in all disciplines. This is true in the Christian experience and walk. The Basics are... well... uh... basic. They are the foundations upon which the rest of our knowledge and experience are built. They are the First Truths of a given subject, from which all other truths on that subject arise. TRUST AND OBEY In the life of following Jesus, and exercising the graces which He provides to His saints, there are certain First Truths we are taught which we must follow. We can boil them down to TRUST AND OBEY. Trust is another word for faith. Obedience is Faith in action. According to the Bible, FAITH AND WORKS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. (James 2:17) But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? (James 2:20) For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. (James 2:26) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ PROFESSION AND POSSESSION Our western world has seen enough of the dead and useless faith. We are surrounded by those who claim to have faith in Jesus but live contrary to His will. It is profession of faith without possession of faith. The robe of the High Priest of the Old Testament shows us the proper relationship of profession and possession of faith. BELLS AND POMEGRANATES At the hem of his garment were hung bells. The bells would be heard as the Priest went about his service in the tabernacle. The bells were an audible declaration of his service to God. They represented what he professed Also hanging from the hem of his robe, there were embroidered pomegranates. The pomegranate is a fruit containing many seeds, which are enclosed in a juicy pulp. Seeds of course are symbolic of fruitfulness or productivity. The embroidered pomegranates were a visual declaration of his service to God. They represented what he possessed. These two symbols were hung alternately from the hem of his garment. For each bell there was a pomegranate. For each pomegranate there was a bell. This tells us we should possess the fruit of our profession. We should not claim that which we do not have. Faith should be shown by the works we perform. FAITH WHICH WORKS This is not calling for "Works Salvation", but for Salvation which Works. Salvation which does not work is not salvation at all. God's Salvation saves from sin; Salvation which does not save from sin is not God's Salvation. Faith which works is Saving Faith; Faith which does not work, is not Saving Faith. We are not saved by self discipline or self denial, and we are not saved by resisting temptation. We are saved by trusting in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, who died for our sins. However, when we trust, we obey. Saving faith is obedient faith. Though many argue against this truth because they are not willing to accept the clear and final authoritative Word of God on this issue of obedience, it is not debatable. Regardless of what Christians may say, the Bible makes it totally clear that saving faith is obedient faith. Faith which does not obey is not saving faith. Faith which does not save is not Bible faith. Though we cannot save ourselves through our good works, we can destroy ourselves through our evil works. The Bible clearly states and re-states again and again that sin separates from God. This is why Christians must guard their hearts. Guarding the heart means guarding the entrances to the heart. FAITH PRODUCES OBEDIENCE From the hidden stream of Faith, flowing deep in our souls, the well of Obedience rises up. From the well of obedience, springs all of our actions which are pleasing to God. Obedience expresses itself outwardly through the sensory gates of our physical bodies. In his book, The Holy War, John Bunyon referred to these gates as Eye-Gate, Ear-Gate, Nose-Gate, Mouth-Gate and Feel-Gate. However, these gates serve two purposes. They allow for the outward flow of the sweet graces of God through our service to Him and others, and they prohibit the inward flow of evil pollution from satan and the world. Our focus will be on EYES, EARS, HANDS, FEET, MOUTH AND MIND. Guarding the heart is like guarding a Palace or Castle. We guard our hearts to keep the adversary, satan, from robbing us of our spiritual treasures and from invading us with his corrupting influence. That is the reason I am going back to this little song we learned as children. It tells us how to guard and use the gates of our lives. The verses to this children's song instruct us, ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (vs) Oh be careful little eyes what you see, (vs) Oh be careful little ears what you hear, (vs) Oh be careful little hands what you do, (vs) Oh be careful little feet where you go, (vs) Oh be careful little mouth what you say, (vs) Oh be careful little mind what you think, ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ After singing each verse we would sing; ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ For the Father up above, Is looking down in love, So be careful little........ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A fresh start means going back to basics. Let's start with the understanding that faith works for the glory of God. Remember, ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ BACK TO TOP <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> #3 A JOINT VENTUREOUR LITTLE SONG------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Be careful little eyes what you see... Be careful little ears what you hear... Be careful little hands what you do... Be careful little feet where you go... Be careful little mouth what you say... Be careful little mind what you think... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ As I have gotten older, and as I have studied the Word, I have come to appreciate even more the wisdom in this little song. The Bible tells us time and again the importance which these gates are to our hearts. PROVERBS 4:11-19 In the book of Proverbs, which means wise sayings, we are admonished to make right choices concerning the gates of our hearts. God gives us direction in the use of our gates. GOD'S GUIDANCE By His Holy Spirit, God leads us into wisdom. Wisdom is making right choices in life. We are not left to ourselves as Christians to make decisions. God guides us. We are not left to grope in the darkness; we are not left to find our own way. God spoke through the writer of Proverbs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths. When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble. (Proverbs 4:11-12) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Since God knows all things about all things all of the time, He knows the right steps we should take in life. He knows the end from the beginning and He knows the best choices for us to make. And since He loves us, He guides us to those right choices. OUR RESPONSE God provides the direction and the strength for us to succeed in the Christian life, and then He provides the ability for us to choose to follow Him. We must take hold of His instruction; we must choose to keep it in our lives. God will not deny us His power and wisdom, but neither will He force it on us. His instruction is not something extra or un-necessary, it is essential for life; it is not just for our success, but it is our very life itself. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life. (Proverbs 4:13) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ There is no spiritual life for those who refuse to accept and hold onto His instruction. If we take fast hold of instruction and do not let it go, it will result in life; if we do not take hold of instruction or we do let it go, it will result in death. As Paul said to the Christians at Rome, ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ For the wages of sin is death; (Rom 6:23) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ GOD WARNS US ABOUT THE EVIL WAY The wisdom which God gives, not only leads us into the things we should do, it leads us away from the things we should not do. God warns us about moving in the direction of wicked men. God points out the doors we should not walk through and the gates we should close. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. (Proverbs 4:14) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The way of wickedness and wicked men is so treacherous that we should not only refuse to go in that direction, we should not even allow ourselves to be exposed to the way of wickedness. We should take pains to keep away from it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away. (Proverbs 4:15) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ WE SERVE A PURPOSE We err when we believe that life is neutral. We are all serving a purpose and an agenda. Even when we are not aware of the purpose we serve, we are serving it nonetheless. * Either we are willingly serving the purpose of God by faithfully obeying Him or * We are willingly serving the purpose of satan by disobeying God or * As pawns on a cosmic chess board, we passively and unknowingly are being manipulated by the dark forces of satan to accomplish his dark purposes. We may think that others are just living for the moment, but they have their agenda. They eat, drink and sleep to accomplish their purposes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall. For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence. (Proverbs 4:16-17) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ OUR CHOICE It is up to us to decide which agenda we will serve. When we choose the way of God, we will show His truth and glory more clearly everyday. The Bible says we are changed from glory to glory and from strength to strength, Our lives will radiate with His presence, purity and power. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. (Proverbs 4:18) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ When we choose the way of satan we will be changed from one level of darkness and futility to another. The more we follow the ways of disobedience the more we are taken captive by the lord of the darkness to do his perverse will. We will not even realize we are being ensnared until we have lost most if not all of our lives. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble. (Proverbs 4:19) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Since we are either serving the purposes of God or satan, we must make a choice to serve God. As Joshua said, ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. (Joshua 24:15) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ BACK TO TOP <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> #4 PROVERBS 4:20-27In our getting a FRESH START we are considering the importance of guarding the gates of our lives. It is through these gates that gain and loss takes place in the treasury of our soul. Remember, gates can swing both ways.We will look at each of these gates individually, but first we see that the writer of Proverbs 14 mentions them together. Though Proverbs 14 is written from a man to his son, it is actually from God to His children. God spoke through the writer of Proverbs 14 to the issue of guarding our gates. EAR-GATE We are to open our Ear-gate to the words of God. They either allow or prohibit entrance and they either allow or prohibit exiting. Our ears are to allow the entrance of God's Word. We are to attune our ears to God's instruction, encouragement, admonition, correction, approval. We need to find and listen to those who teach, counsel, speak the truth in love. We need to fill our hearts and minds with the truth of God from those we know to be living in the power of that truth on a daily basis. Thre are many who claim the name of Christ and many who claim to teach the Bible in the name of God, but their lives and their doctrines are a contradiction to the truth. We need to be discriminating in our choices. When we find those who are sincere and Christlike in their teaching, we should exert ourselves in hearing the Word of God from them. We will go out of our way to hear our favorite music group, motivational speaker, sports figure, Christian or otherwise, how much more we should make the effort to hear preaching and teaching from those who not only know the Word, but live the Word daily? Then, having heard the Word we are to live by those truths. We are to put into action the the things we learn. ---------------------------------------------------------- My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. (Proverbs 4:20) ---------------------------------------------------------- EYE-GATE AND MIND-GATE After having found the word of God we are to apply ourselves to studying It. We are to read and remember the things God says to us. We are to hold on to His Word with all of our strength. The Word is not only to pass through the gates of our ears and eyes, It is to find lodging in our minds, hearts. We are to meditate, think on those things daily. We are to fill our thoughts with God's truth. We are to bring every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. ---------------------------------------------------------- Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. (Proverbs 4:21) Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee. (Proverbs 4:25) ---------------------------------------------------------- The Word we see and hear and hide away in our hearts impacts our whole being. It is our life and strength and health. Though this does not mean we are exempt from sickness, pain and suffering, we will be delivered from many maladies which afflict most people. In those situations where we do suffer, we are better equipped to deal with those trials than we would be if we did not fill our heart with God's truth. ---------------------------------------------------------- For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. (Proverbs 4:20-23) ---------------------------------------------------------- MOUTH-GATE We are to guard the communications which come out of our mouths. We must not speak anything but truth. Even when we must tell things which are going to cause pain, we must speak with love. We cannot control every situation we face, but we can control our response to every situation. ---------------------------------------------------------- Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee. (Proverbs 4:24) ---------------------------------------------------------- FOOT-GATE We must choose the paths of life we will take. If we allow others to make our choices we may be led down a path of destruction. We must also make our decisions with much thought and consideration. Our choices must be based on solid precepts and accurate information. Let God be the One Who leads us in our relationships, education, career and recreations. His leading always fulfills and never fails. ---------------------------------------------------------- Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil. (Proverbs 4:26-27) ---------------------------------------------------------- We will spend one lesson on each of these gates and see what the Bible has to say. Remember, we are wanting a fresh start and that should include every area of our lives. BACK TO TOP <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> #5 GUARD THE EYESIn this lesson we will consider the importance of guarding the eye gate.------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh be careful little eyes what you see, ------------------------------------------------------------------- FOR GOOD OR ILL Eyesight is about the most precious of our physical abilities. If faced with the loss of one of our senses, most people would rather lose nearly anything, other than their eyesight. Eyesight as an ability is good, since it is a gift of God, but the use of eyesight is not inherently good or evil. With the eye we can either read the Word of God and see God's handiwork in the stars and the heavens or we can look on that which is unclean and morally destructive. THE EVIL IN EVE'S EYE The first sin of the human race came because this gate was not guarded properly. God had told Adam not to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. He told them that they would die if they did. satan tempted Eve by pointing out that the fruit would be *good for food, *pleasant to the eyes *and it would make them wise. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ And...the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise. (Genesis 3:6) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Though there were several facets to this act of rebellion, the failure to bring the eyes under control was part of it. Eve knew the law of God prohibited the eating of the Fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, yet feasted her eyes on it. It was pleasant to look at. This helped open the door of her heart to the temptation of satan. Notice, the Fruit was not disgusting in its appearance. It was pleasant. When satan approached Eve, he tried to put God in a bad light. he said that God had told Adam and Eve not to eat of any of the fruit of the garden when in fact God had only put a restriction on the eating of the Fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Eve followed satan's lead by saying that God had told them not to even touch the Fruit. God had not given either of those directives. Though God had not forbidden them to look at the Fruit, it would have been to their benefit to keep their eyes to themselves. God gives us the opportunity to make choices which will either lead us to victory or defeat. Though God has power and authority, He allows usby His grace, to be the decision makers. One of the steps to failure was looking on the Forbidden Fruit and desiring it. Many of the sins which people allow into their lives come because of something pleasant to the eyes. Coveting and lusting often come about because a person does not close the eyegate. A KING CONQUERED BY A CORRUPTED EYE We see this in King David of Israel, ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman [was] very beautiful to look upon. And David sent and enquired after the woman. And [one] said, [Is] not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her... (I Samuel 11:2) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ King David abused his power. If he had exercised the power of self discipline and self denial and if he had invoked the power of God through prayer he would have not fallen prey to the wiles of satan. If he had not allowed himself the pleasure of gazing at that beautiful woman, he could have avoided the lust which welled up in his heart and his mind, and in avoiding the lust he would have avoided the sin. Though we will not take the time to follow the whole story of King David's sin, let me point out that he ended up killing his friend Uriah, the husband of Bathsheba in order to cover up his act of adultery. Sin leads to sin, leads to sin... LESSONS FROM JESUS The sin is as old as mankind and it has destroyed many great people. Jesus told us that lusting is sin, ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. (Matthew 5:28) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ We cannot underestimate the importance of the eye when it comes to the impact it has on our soul. Jesus told us the importance or the eye, ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! (Matthew 6:22-23) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ NEW TESTAMENT WRITERS JAMES OBSERVED James tells us that the first step to destruction is when we allow ourselves to be drawn away by our lust, exaggerated desires. Even normal and natural desires become lust or corrupted when we open the Eye-gate to that which is forbidden. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. (James 1:14-15) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ JOHN WARNS ABOUT THE EYE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. (1John 2:16) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT BEING BAD Our lessons are relatively short, and therefore limited in scope. We have pointed out the importance of our eyes in closing out temptation. Maybe some day I will focus on other issues concerned with the Eye-gate. For the time being, let me simply point out a few passages which help us understand the importance of the eye in our relationship with God, such as beholding His glory, seeing the needs of others, seeing our opportunities, reading His Word. SOME OF PSALMS' SECRETS TO SUCCESS Meditate on some of these verses and let God direct your heart in the best use of your Eye-gate. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mine eyes are ever toward the LORD; for he shall pluck my feet out of the net. Psalms 25:15 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes... (Psalms 101:3) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. Psalms 119:18 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way. (Psa 119:37) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ BACK TO TOP <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> #6 GUARD THE EARS------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh be careful little ears what you hear, ------------------------------------------------------------------- A BASIC TRUTH In preparing this lesson I find that most of what the Bible has to say about hearing concerns the communications between God and mankind. On the one hand, we are to hear what God is saying to us. He always has something important to say and we always need to hear it. Sometimes He speaks instruction, which is vital for success. Sometimes He speaks correction, which is vital for survival. Always He speaks in love, which is vital for life and growth. We do ourselves immeasurable harm when we do not hear what God has to say to us. Take time to hear God today. The other side of hearing which is prominent in the Scriptures is, God hears us when we pray or call on Him. God is an interactive God. Though He is all-powerful and all-knowing, He chooses to hear our prayers and act in concert with us when we are doing His will. When we pray according to the directions He gives us in His Word, our prayers are as powerful as God. Let me say that again; "When we pray according to the directions He gives us in His Word, our prayers are as powerful as God." NOTICE, I did not say that God is as weak as our prayers, I said that our prayers can be as powerful as God. I am not equating prayers with God, but simply saying that God has ordained that our Spirit led and empowered prayers to employ Him in our life and world. Our prayers can be a powerful as God because God is the one Who answers our prayers. Our prayers are not all powerful, but the God Who answers them is all powerful. We do not create new realities or change old ones by our prayers, but God does. Take time to speak to God today, He will hear you. A BASIC PROBLEM USE IT OR LOSE IT This is a maxim of life. If we do not use our muscles they will atrophy. If we do not use our cognitive abilities, they will diminish. If we do not use our various skills, they will deteriorate. If we do not use our hearing to hear God, it will grow dull. Not hearing God can be brought about either by our refusing to hear Him or by choosing to hear something else instead. TUNE OUT It is not unsual for a person to TUNE OUT others. This can even happen between husbands and wives or parents and children. People do this either because they do not like the person speaking or because they do not want to hear what is being said. Sometimes people TUNE OUT God. They close out His Word and His Spirit. They do not read His Word, they do not listen to Him in meditation, they do not attend Bible preaching and teaching meetings. They do not listen to others who tell them about God. DROWN OUT Sometimes people DROWN OUT others. This happens when we become so absorbed with one thing that we are totally oblivious to anything else. This is the problem with people today. They are so involved in entertainment, recreation, vocation, relationships, education, social affairs, politics, making a living and community projects that they are DROWNING OUT God with their busy-ness and their amusements. In both of these scenarios, the individual has resisted and rebelled against God and His Word. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Son of man, thou dwellest in the midst of a rebellious house, which have eyes to see, and see not; they have ears to hear, and hear not: for they are a rebellious house. (Ezekiel 12:2) ------------------------------------------------------------------ And remember, people choose not to listen to God either because they do not like Him or they do not want to hear what He has to say. A BASIC SOLUTION The solution to this problem is to open our EARGATE. Meditate on and Memorize at least some of these passages. OPEN YOUR EARS TO GOD Jesus Said, It Is A Choice ------------------------------------------------------------------ He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. (Matthew 11:15) ------------------------------------------------------------------ Jesus Told Us To Hear And Understand ------------------------------------------------------------------ And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: (Matthew 15:10) ------------------------------------------------------------------ Hearing Makes Us Wise ------------------------------------------------------------------ Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.(Proverbs 8:33) ------------------------------------------------------------------ Listen To Godly Parents ------------------------------------------------------------------ My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: (Proverbs 1:8) ------------------------------------------------------------------ Wise Men Hear, Learn And Obey ------------------------------------------------------------------ A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: (Proverbs 1:5) ------------------------------------------------------------------ We Should Be Quick To Hear ------------------------------------------------------------------ Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: (James 1:19) ------------------------------------------------------------------ Hearing God In The Morning ------------------------------------------------------------------ Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee (Psalms 143:8) ------------------------------------------------------------------ BASICS RESULTS We generally think of "hearing" as simply the mechanical and physiologicial phenomena of receiving sound waves. In the Bible, "hearing" is often associated with understanding and even with obedience. Hear, Fear And Do No More Wickedness ----------------------------------------------------------------- And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do no more any such wickedness as this is among you. (Deuteronomy 13:11) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Hearing Turns Us From Sin ----------------------------------------------------------------- Observe and hear all these words which I command thee, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee for ever, when thou doest that which is good and right in the sight of the LORD thy God. (Deuteronomy 12:28) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Hear, Love, Do Good ----------------------------------------------------------------- But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, (Luke 6:27) ----------------------------------------------------------------- As we guard our EAR-GATE we should be ready and eager to admit entrance to that which will glorify and please God. Not everything we hear will be pleasant or encouraging, but it must be that which God wants us to hear. CLOSE YOUR EARS TO WICKEDNESS Do Not Listen To Misleading Instruction ---------------------------------------------------------------- Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge. (Proverbs 19:27) ----------------------------------------------------------------- The prince of darkness seeks to misguide us in any and every way he can. his whole purpose is in separating us from God. However, he does not just attack us on the Theological plain, he attacks us on every level; academic, medical, financial, relational, political. We must guard our ears from listening to anything which will lead us astray. We are not to follow any leadership which leads us away from God and His Truth. What we listen to will affect us. In computer jargon, the old saying is, G-I-G-O...Garbage In, Garbage Out. Whatever we put into the computer is what we will get out of the computer. Though we are not computers, the principle is still applicable. If we allow Garbage In, through music, stories, words, gossip, we will have garbage in our thinking. As one fellow called it, "Stinking Thinking." This does not mean that we avoid unpleasant truth. Sometimes truth hurts and sometimes it is unpleasant. What I am saying is, do not allow un-necessary and destructive and carnal negativism into your life. It will produce a Garbage-Out lifestyle. Sometimes We Should Not Listen To Other People ----------------------------------------------------------------- Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee: Ecclesiastes 7:2(1) ----------------------------------------------------------------- We are constantly surrounded by negative and destructive comments. If we allow them entrance through the EAR-GATE we will be affected and infected as well. We must not be tossed-to-and-fro by all of the false doctrines and false information which is floating about. When we allow words from other people to enter our hearts, we are subject to becoming their slaves. satan seeks to control us by telling us things which are contrary to God and His Word. If we are open to these lies, negativism and accusations, we will be flooded with destructive thoughts. ----------------------------------------------------------------- A STRANGE BUT BIBLICAL CONCEPT Through the years I have found it strange that so many people listen to Christian music and read Christian literature, yet continue to live shallow and carnal lives. It doesn't matter if the style is "gospel", "southern gospel", "high church", "contemporary", or whatever style, the end result is the same and it doesn't matter what the age of the listener. They hear enough truth to save the world, but act as if they have heard nothing. The problem is not the hearing with the ears, but the hearing with the heart. It comes back to "having ears to hear." The Bible speaks to this issue. When we listen to Christian music, we should listen with the ears of the inner man. The Christian life is the inner life of Christ in us expressing itself in our outward behavior. Christian Songs May Entertain, But May Not Transform ----------------------------------------------------------------- And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not. Ezekiel 33:32 ----------------------------------------------------------------- It is not unusual to encounter people who would rather be part of a "song service" or attend a "Christian concert" or go to a "Praise and Worship" service rather than listen to Bible Teaching and Preaching. They want something which soothes them rather than something which challenges them. But soothing words do not change us and they do not get us to heaven. This aversion to the Preached and Taught Word is a sign of shallowness and it will lead to more shallow living. Listen To Rebuke Rather Than Soothing Songs ----------------------------------------------------------------- It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools. Ecclesiastes 7:5 ----------------------------------------------------------------- Even when these people do go to "Bible Studies" or "Bible Preaching", they choose that which pleases them and is agreeable to their baser selves. Speaking of the end times, Paul told Timothy that people would choose more appealing gospel than the one God has given. The Rebellious Want To Hear Soothing Words ----------------------------------------------------------------- For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 2Timothy 4:3 ----------------------------------------------------------------- BACK TO TOP <><><><><><><><><><><><><> ![]() |
