#1 THE BIRTH OF JESUS WAS IMPORTANT TO THE FATHER

12/18/00

We are living at a time when so much confusion exist that it is not unusual to hear people who claim to love the Lord tell us that we should not celebrate the Birth of Christ. It use to be we only heard such words from cult members. But now it comes from people who really seem to love the Lord. Maybe some of them do love Him, but they have been misled on this issue at least.

Regardless of the misuse and abuse of the "Christmas" season and the seeming confusion on the "actual date" of His birth, the fact is, God gave special attention to the Birth of His Son in many ways. I will mention some of these ways.

CHRISTMAS WAS IMPORTANT TO THE FATHER

#1 God promised the birth of His Son. All the way back in in the beginning of the Bible God said in reference to the future cominig of His Son through the woman's seed,

----------------------------------
"And I (God) will put enmity (hatred) between thee (satan) and the woman (Eve), and between thy seed (satan's spiritual family [the unsaved]) and her seed (Jesus); it (the seed of the woman, Jesus) shall bruise (inflict a wound) thy head (a final wound), and thou (satan) shall bruise (wound) his (Jesus') heel (a temporary wound)" (Genesis 3:15).
----------------------------------

I added parenthesis for those who might not be as familiar with this passage.

Throughout the Old Testament God promised to send His Son. God promised to send His Son,

----------------------------------
"Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel" (Isaiah 7:14).
----------------------------------

And again He promised,

----------------------------------
"For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is give: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6)
----------------------------------

There is much more, but the point is...God promised the birth of His Son. The birth of Jesus is Special.

#2 THE BIRTH OF JESUS WAS IMPORTANT TO THE PROPHETS

12/18/00
Some of the factors which indicate the birth of Jesus being special would be,

#1 the fact that it was promised by the Father as was mentioned in the previous post.

CHRISTMAS WAS IMPORTANT TO THE PROPHETS

#2 it was prophesied by the prophets.

As the three passages in post #1 clearly point out, God promised the sending of His Son. The prophets also told us He would be born in Bethlehem,

----------------------------------
"But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting" (Micah 5:2).
----------------------------------

The time of His birth was announced,

----------------------------------
"Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times." (Dan 9:25)
----------------------------------

The attending massacre of the infants at the time of His birth was foretold,

----------------------------------
"Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rahel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not" (Jeremiah 31:15).
----------------------------------

For God to have moved His prophets on these and many other occasions to foretell the birth of His Son, shows us that the birth of JESUS IS SPECIAL.

3 The birth of JESUS WAS IMPORTANT TO THE ANGELS

12/18/00

#1 God the Father promised His birth
#2 The prophets prophesied His birth
And

CHRISTMAS WAS IMPORTANT TO THE ANGELS

#3 The angels proclaimed His birth.

Angels told Old Testament People

God had seen to it that the birth of His Son should not be overlooked, ignored or neglected. He had promised, along with Adam, Abraham, Moses, David, Isaiah, Daniel, Malachi, the other prophets and priests that He would send His Son to be born. And now as the "blessed" event was about to happen, he sends angels to announce the coming birth.

Angels told New Testament Priest

An angel announced to the aged Priest, Zacharias, that he and his wife would have a son. This son would be named John and would have a very special ministry to perform. His son was being born for the express purpose of leading the way for the coming of the Son of God. John, would be the one to call Israel back to God and then point them to the promised and prophesied Son of God.

Angels told the Virgin Mary

The angel also went to a young woman and told her that she was going to have a child, though she had never had relations with a man. Mary was told to name her Son Jesus, for He would save His people from their sins and that He would be called the Son of God.

Angels told Joseph

An angel came to the man who was "espoused" (that is like being married to a person, short of having been with them intimately) and told him that his Mary was going to have a child. For her to have a child by another man would be adultery and Joseph could have had her stoned to death. He was choosing to just put her aside when the angel explained the miraculous conception and the ramifications of the birth to Joseph and told him to take care of Mary.

Angels told the Shepherds

Angels gathered together at the time of Jesus birth and announced His arrival to the shepherds who were watching over their sheep nearby,

----------------------------------
"And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord...And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men" (Luke 2:1).
----------------------------------

With this much angel activity, who can deny that
the birth of JESUS IS SPECIAL.

Upward and Onward in Jesus,

4 THE BIRTH OF JESUS WAS IMPORTANT TO THE SHEPHERDS

12/18/00

#1 God the Father promised His birth
#2 The prophets prophesied His birth
#3 The angels proclaimed His birth

And

CHRISTMAS WAS IMPORTANT TO THE SHEPHERDS

#4 The shepherds praised at His birth.

The lowly shepherds were simply doing their jobs, watching over their flocks by night. Maybe it was a coal-black night, with a sky full of diamond bright stars. They conversed, they watched, they dreamed, they rested, they guarded. Then they were startled beyond words. Out of the silent night appeared an angel, robed in the splendor and glory of God. In his majesty and awesomeness, he explained that the Desire of Ages had just been born in a stable in the little town below them. The Bright and Morning Star was shining in a crib and surrounded by sheep and cattle. The shepherds were being invited to go and see what had been made known to them. As they listened to the message of the angel, suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host from the realms of glory saying, singing praises to God. When the angels disappeared into the night, the shepherds left their sheep and sought the Shepherd of their souls. When they arrived at the manger, they worshipped and praised the Holy Child and then went out to tell it on the mountain and so that others asked what it meant. The shepherds continued to glorify God and give praise for what they had seen and heard.

Truly, the birth of JESUS IS SPECIAL

5 THE BIRTH OF JESUS WAS IMPORTANT TO THE GODLY OF HIS DAY

12/18/00

#1 God the Father promised His birth
#2 The prophets prophesied His birth
#3 The angels proclaimed His birth
#4 The shepherds praised at His birth

And

CHRISTMAS WAS IMPORTANT TO THE GODLY OF HIS DAY

TO MARY AND JOSEPH

#5 The people percieve the meaning of His birth.
Soon after His birth, Jesus was taken by Mary and Joseph to be presented at the temple. As the first-born of His mother he was to be set apart, sanctified, to God; as the First-Born of God the Father, He was presented to set apart, sanctify His people.

TO THE RELIGIOUS LEADERS OF THE DAY

At the time of Jesus dedication, the Holy Spirit came upon one of the local residents of Jerusalem, Simeon, and revealed to him that he would not see death until he had seen the Christ, the Messiah, the Promised One of Israel. When Simeon saw and held the Child up in his arms he blessed God and declared that he had seen the salvation of God and that this Child was the Light of the gentiles and the glory of Israel. He perceived that the Babe would suffer as well as save.

TO THE SERVANTS OF GOD

A woman who had great love for God also served in the temple with prayers and fastings. When she entered the temple on the day that the Babe was being dedicated, she too perceived His glory, praising the Lord and telling all the people about the redemptions that this Holy Child would bring.

For those who look for the answer to the problems of life, the birth of JESUS IS SPECIAL.

6 THE BIRTH OF JESUS WAS IMPORTANT TO THE MAGI

12/18/00

#1 God the Father promised His birth
#2 The prophets prophesied His birth
#3 The angels proclaimed His birth
#4 The shepherds praised at His birth
#5 The people perceived the meaning of His birth

And

CHRISTMAS WAS IMPORTANT TO THE MAGI.

#6 The Magi pursued the star of His birth.

God had planned from before the foundation of the world to send His Son as the seed of Eve and the Holy Child of Mary. He had written the story of His love and redemption in the heavens. Though the heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament show forth His handiwork, and though the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen so that even His eternal power and Godhead are made known and man is without excuse, most men never read or hear what God has revealed to them about His Son and His salvation.

The Magi did pay attention and they knew that the Christ was to be born at a certain time and and certain place. They watched the heavens fo the sign of His birth. They saw it and then they followed it.

The star which appeared at the time of His birth led them from far away Persia to Jerusalem where they asked for directions, having lost the star for a while. When they arrived, the Baby was almost two years old and His family had moved into a house. The Magi had persisted and pursued the natal star until they found the pearl of great price, the treasure beyond measure. They fell down and woshipped Him and gave gifts of love. Because Herod was seeking to kill the Baby, and had planned on getting information from the Magi, God sent an angel to lead them away from the enemy of the young Prince of Peace. God led, honored and protected the Magi who were moved to follow the star of His birth.

To the men who seek the Truth and the Life, the birth of JESUS IS SPECIAL.

7 THE BIRTH OF JESUS WAS ESSENTIAL TO OUR SALVATION

12/18/00
#1 God the Father promised His birth
#2 The prophets prophesied His birth
#3 The angels proclaimed His birth
#4 The shepherds praised at His birth
#5 The people perceived the meaning of His birth
#6 The Magi pursued the star of His birth

And

HIS BIRTH IS ESSENTIAL TO OUR SALVATION

#7 Salvation could not have been purchased without His birth.
Before there could be a perfect life there had to be a birth.
Before there could be a perfect sacrifice, there had to be a birth.
Before there could be a resurrection, there had to be a birth.
Before there could be salvation, there had to be a birth.

We do not worship birthdays, we do not worship a date on a calander, we do not worship the material gifts, we do not worship decorated trees and lights. We worship the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. We worship the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world. We worship the Prince of Peace and the Fountainhead of Life.

When I stop to think about all that Jesus did in His life, death and resurrection, it is clear to me that the birth of JESUS IS SPECIAL.
