Thanksgiving
One church had a minister who would always give a prayer of thanks for the weather - the warm, pleasant wind, the bit of sunshine that had brightened the afternoon, or the glorious sunset. One Sunday evening the weather was wild. A terrible storm was raging outside the church as the minister rose to pray, "Lord, we thank You that the weather is not as bad as this every day!"
Time
‘I have only just a minute, only sixty seconds in it,
Forced upon me - can't refuse it, didn't seek it, didn't chose it,
But it's up to me to use it - give account if I abuse it;
Just a tiny little minute - but eternity is in it.’
(Anon.)
Trials
On one occasion Sir Edwin Landseer (British painter, 1802-73, specialised in animal paintings & designed the lions in Trafalgar Square, London) was a guest in a Scottish mansion. A jug of soda water was accidentally spilled on a freshly decorated wall leaving an unsightly stain. When the family went out on the moors Landseer stayed behind. With a piece of charcoal he used the stain as the outline for a beautiful waterfall, bordered by trees and wildlife. Similarly, God can transform the trials of our lives into something beautiful.
Unity in the church
When the British and French were fighting in Canada in the 1750's, Admiral Phipps, commander of the British fleet, was told to anchor outside Quebec and wait for the land forces to arrive before attacking the city. As he waited he became annoyed by the statues of the saints on the cathedral towers, so be commanded his men to shoot at them with the ship's cannons. So many rounds were fired that when the land forces arrived and the signal was given to attack, the admiral's ship was of no use because he had used up all his ammunition shooting at the 'saints'.
Vision
"The first thing needed to make a dream come true is to wake up."
(Anon.)
Warfare (spiritual)
"It is quite certain that in spiritual warfare nothing is achieved by activities which do not bring us into close touch with the enemy."
(Report of the China Inland Mission, 1930)
Words
Calvin Coolidge (30th US President - 1872-1933) was a man of few words. He found himself sitting next to a young lady at a dinner. She said, "Mr President; I have made a bet with my friends that I can make you say at least three words to me during dinner". "You lose" replied Coolidge and remained silent for the rest of the meal.
Worship
"Fruitful and acceptable worship begins before it begins."
(Alexander MacLaren - Baptist preacher)
Worth
On one occasion Yehudi Munuhin’s car broke down (American-born British violinist - b. 1916). He made his way on foot to a hotel. When he arrived he was dusty and dishevelled so the manager turned him away. Someone recognised him and told the manager who ran after him apologising and said: "I'm so sorry. I didn't realise you were somebody. Menuhin paused then replied, “Madam, everybody is somebody”.
