Patience
Phillips Brooks (American minister & writer - 1835-93) was noted for his poise and quiet manner. However, one day a friend saw him feverishly pacing the floor like a caged lion and asked him what the trouble was. "The trouble is," replied Brooks, "that I’m in a hurry, but God isn't!"

Peace

If there be righteousness in the heart, there will be beauty in the character.
If there be beauty in the character, there will be harmony in the home.
If there be harmony in the home, there will be order in the nation.
When there is order in the nation, there will be peace in the world
(Chinese proverb)

Perseverance
Pope Gregory sent St Augustine to evangelise heathen England in 597AD telling him, "not to be deterred by the troubles of the journey or what men say. It is better not to undertake a high enterprise at all than to abandon it once begun". St Augustine became the first Archbishop of Canterbury.

Plain Speaking
A country vicar bumped into an elderly villager and said, "How is it that I haven't seen you in church lately?" The old man thought for a moment then said: "Because I ain't been!"

Positive Thinking
'All units must get used to having Japanese parties at their rear, and when this happens, regard not themselves but the Japanese as surrounded.'
(Field Marshal Sir William Slim 1899-1970, commanded British forces in the Far East in 1941)

Prayer
A church in a small American town held an all-night prayer meeting when a night club opened on the main street. One member asked God to burn it down. Within a few moments, lightning struck the club and it was burnt to the ground. The owner sued the church, which denied all responsibility. In court the judge said, “It seems that wherever the guilt may lie; the night club owner believes in the power of prayer, while the church does not!”

Racism
Many years ago in South Africa a young spiritual seeker was turned away from a mission meeting because of his colour. Soon afterwards he rejected Christianity. He was Mohandas Gandhi (known as Mahatma Gandhi - Indian politician & pacifist - 1869-1948), who later went on to lead 400,000 people as a Hindu. E Stanley Jones, a missionary to India commented, "Racialism has many sins to bear, but perhaps its worst sin was the obscuring of Christ in an hour when one of the greatest souls born of a woman was making his decision".

Resurrection of the body
Benjamin Franklin (US statesman, philosopher, physicist & journalist - 1706-90) amusingly penned his own epitaph:

The body of B. Franklin, printer:
Like the cover of an old book
Its contents torn out,
And stripped of its lettering and gilding,
Lies here, food for worms,
But the work shall not be wholly lost:
For it will, as he believed, appear once more
In a new and more perfect edition,
Corrected and amended by the Author.

Sanctification
"The inheritance, which is the sum-total of blessing, is ours by Gods gift, but the possession is that much of the inheritance which we make our own. What is enfolded in regeneration should be unfolded in sanctification. What is ours should become ours. What is possible should become actual. What is potential should become potent."
(W Graham Scroggie)

Self-centredness
The 17th century Scottish peer Lord Erskine complained to his publisher about the delay in printing his autobiography. He was told that the printers had sadly run out of capitals of the letter ‘I’.

Sin
In the USA there is an event that takes place on Santa Monica pier called ‘Jumping to Catalina Island’. Catalina Island is 25 miles away. Obviously no-one can jump that far. No matter how good a jumper a person is, he will still get wet. The Bible says, "All have sinned and come short of the glory of God."

Suffering
Church of England Bishop Gavin Reid tells of a boy in his congregation who shattered his back falling down the stairs at the age of one and had consequently been in and out of hospital. When Gavin interviewed him in a service the boy remarked that “God it fair”. Gavin asked him, “How old are you?” “Seventeen,” the boy replied. "How many years have you spent in hospital?" The boy answered, “Thirteen years”. Gavin then asked, “Do you think that is fair?” He replied, “God's got all of eternity to make it up to me.”
