Why have 'windows' in a talk?
It has been said that, “A sermon without illustrations is like a house without windows.”
Illustrations are like windows because they provide:
Illumination: they let in light!
After a Sunday morning service one member of a congregation said to another, “I don’t always understand our minister's sermons - they are so deep.”
His friend replied, “They’re not deep, they’re just muddy!”
Making the message clear is vitally important. This can often be done by relating a story or saying to illustrate a point. This helps to shed light on the deeper and murkier areas of the message!
Ventilation: they let in air!
When a room gets stuffy it is a good idea to open a window and let some fresh air in before someone falls asleep. Stuffy talks also need a bit of air in order to avoid the same problem!
People’s concentration span is not as long as it once was. A well placed illustration or quote, especially if it is humorous, can prevent minds from wandering, and bring back those that have already wandered.
This is not to say that any good story will do. It must be relevant to the message. Nevertheless, a good sermon, like a healthy room, needs to be well aired!
