*Tip: You can create home pages specific to seasons (Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc.). Keep them saved to use year after year. Then just set the appropriate page each season without the need to recreate the entire page.

The NE1 Web Builder has hundreds of templates to be used for a stylish web design. However, there may be a time when the use of 2 or more templates for one website is desired. If so, the "Default Template" drop-down menu determines which template is used whenever a new page is created. (It is always possible to change the template on each page at any time.) *NOTE: This setting will not affect the content of your website. In order to change the language of your website, you will need to enter the text in that language. If the language contains characters not found in most Western European languages, then you will need to use the "Metachar" option to select the language character set for your language. You can find the "Metachar" setting under the "Meta Tags" tab of the Web Builder Configuration section.

This feature has been added as a convenience to those who like to use a lot of different templates - or simply want to be aware of menu items that could alter or distort the template. Each NE1 template has been designed to allow for a certain number of characters for each menu item. If the number of characters used is too large, the template will often distort or "start over" - causing a repetition of the theme background and a strange look. Putting a number in this box (25, for example) will keep your menu items from becoming too long. This is an optional feature and an empty box will allow for as many characters as you like, though too many characters will have an unpredictable outcome.

This feature has been known as the "Bread Crumbs" feature - aptly named to describe the process of making it easier to get back to where you started. On websites with many menu items and sub-menu items, this feature is often useful for helping the visitor save time by clicking on ready-made links at the top of each page. "SEO" stands for "Search Engine Optimization" - a term that means your site is setup to take the most advantage of search engines such as Google® or Yahoo®. The SEO Friendly drop down box allows you to choose the "Link Add-on" feature. The "Link Add-on" feature allows you to add words to the URL (web address) of each page.

Example:

Typically a contact page web page created by the NE1 Web Builder will have a URL like this:

http://www.ourchurch.com/member/d/DirectoryName/index.php?p=1_3_Contact

or if you have a domain name, like this:

http://www.YourDomainName.com/index.php?p=1_3_Contact


With the "Link Add-on" feature, you can add words to the end of the URL in place of the web page name. So, you could have a URL like:

http://www.ourchurch.com/member/d/DirectoryName/index.php?p=1_3_ Computer-Parts-Contact-Form

or

http://www.YourDomainName.com/index.php?p=1_3_ Computer-Parts-Contact-Form

This allows you to put keywords (Computer Parts) into your page\'s URLs (web addresses) which can help in the search engines.

The words that are used in the URL (web address) are determined for each page by the "SEO Words" setting under the "SEO Features" tab. You can leave this turned off if SEO is not important for your website. Press the button to save what you have entered.

This drop-down menu allows you to choose the format in which you would like the submenus to work on your website. There are three choices which work as follows:

1. "Sub-menu heading links to a list of pages in the sub-menu": Choosing this will cause the main menu item (heading) to open up a page that displays links to all of the pages represented by the sub-menu names the drop down from this menu item.

2. "Sub-menu heading links to a page": Choosing this will cause the heading itself to represent its own page. Items that drop down underneath this heading will also have their own page.

3. "Sub-menu heading is not clickable": Choosing this will cause the heading to simply be a representation of what drops down beneath it. This heading cannot be clicked as nothing will happen.

It is always a good idea to include a footer with your website. This information is displayed at the bottom of all your website's pages. The footer can contain a copyright notice, site creator, contact info, a slogan, or even a link to a specific page. The NE1 web builder includes the copyright notice as a default. Enter what you would like displayed in the footer and then press the button to save what you have entered.

*Tip: Certain items in brackets {} can be used throughout the web design process as a method for insuring that these items are accurate and making the editing a lot easier. For example, the code {%WebsiteName%} will always display on your website with the contents of the "Website Name" field. (See "Website Name") As a result, by changing one setting (your "website name" field) you can change all instances of this item throughout your site instead of having to change every instance separately.

Do you have a logo you would like to use instead of a text title and slogan? Use the Website Logo feature to upload and display your logo. The NE1 Asset Manager will display a list of currently available graphic files for your website (graphics you have uploaded) and an option to upload a new one. Select the desired logo file and press "OK".

If you do not see the logo graphic you want to use, you will need to upload the file. You will first need to have a digital copy (computer picture) of your logo on your computer. Once you have the digital copy of your logo, you can upload the logo by pressing the "Browse" button, selecting the logo, and then clicking the "Upload" button. After uploading the graphic, select it and click the "OK" button.

You can preview the logo file by passing your mouse over the small icon next to the words "Website Logo". Press the button to save what you have entered.

*NOTE: The website name and slogan may not appear on the header of the website if the logo feature is used. This is predetermined by template settings.

One of the great features of the NE1 Web Builder is that the webmaster can get an idea of what the site will look like while he/she is designing it. The term "WYSIWYG" is an acronym for "What You See Is What You Get" and it is commonly used in the design software context. It allows people who do not know HTML or other computer scripts to build attractive and functional websites.

More advanced designers, however, may want to enter HTML code, rather than to use a "WYSIWYG" editor. Choosing "No" in this drop-down box will remove the "WYSIWYG" editor and the accompanying icons in favor of the more advanced editing environment.

We recommend that everyone keep the WYSIWYG Editor setting on. Even with the WYSIWYG Editor turned on, more advanced users can still access and modify the page code by clicking the "HTML" icon in the WYSIWYG Editor.

Meta tags provide information about a given webpage, most often to help search engines categorize them correctly, but also to give instructions to visitors web browsers about a website. The meta tags are inserted into the HTML document, but are often not directly visible to a user visiting the site. While meta tags are less significant today than they were in years past, they are still an important element of a website and should not be overlooked. Each individual tag represents a different category or topic and some tags can actually have an active affect on your website by redirecting a page, or by keeping search engine "bots" away. (More on search engines under the Search Engine Optimization topic in these help files.)

*Note: The Web Builder Configuration meta tag menu allows you to setup site-wide settings for the meta tags of pages. Individual pages can also have individual meta tags setup when editing the specific pages. If you setup an individual page's meta tag settings, the page's settings will overide the site-wide settings on that page.

*Note 2: The Web Builder Configuration meta tag menu only allows you to setup site-wide settings for the meta title, description, keywords, and charset. If you would like to setup other meta tags, such as the "meta robots" tag, you can do so in each page's setup in the "Meta Other" box.

*Tip: You can setup individual meta tags for each page when editing your website's pages. This allows you to be page specific in the title, description, and keywords for each page. You can also use each page to target different keywords to help you rank better in the major search engines for more keywords.

The charset tag is necessary for a couple of important reasons. First, it validates your web page for search engines. Secondly, it's important because, if a web browser can't detect the character encoding used in a document, visitors may end up with an unreadable page. By default the meta charset is set to (Western European ISO), the most widely used character set. However, if you are using a language on your website with characters that do not appear in the Western European languages, you will need to select a different setting which includes that language's characters. Press the button to save what you have entered.

Unlike the keywords tag, the description tag is supported by most major search engines. The description tag provides a concise explanation of a web page's content. This allows you to give a more meaningful description for search engine listings than might be displayed if the search engine was to automatically create its own description based on the page content. The description is often, but not always, displayed in the search engine results. Try to keep the description as a brief single paragraph. A good rule of thumb is to keep the meta description at 300 characters or less. Press the button to save what you have entered.

Keywords have lost a lot of their significance over the years, but are still not to be overlooked. Place words and short phrases that best describe the content of your website. Be sure each word or phrase is separated by a comma and a space.

Example:
website host, website, free Christian web sites, Christian web host

(Note that "website host" and "website" are two different keywords even though both use the word, website.)

A good rule of thumb is to keep the meta keyword list at 300 characters or less. Press the button to save what you have entered.

*Note: The keyword tag has been abused by people in the past trying to improve their website's rankings in the search engines. You should avoid repeating keywords in your list or putting hundreds of keywords. Also, the keywords used should be relevant to your website.

Choose a title for your site that includes your site name and describes its contents. Some search engines use the meta title in their listings. Visitors will also be able to see the meta title in the colored strip at the top of their browser window:

Avoid a title that is too long. A good rule of thumb is to keep the meta title at 100 characters or less. Press the button to save what you have entered.

*Tip: Include keywords in your title to help your website rank well for those keywords. However, do not use the meta title to "stuff" a bunch of keywords into the title. The title should be natural and make sense.
