Church History

The Free Will Baptist Church at Berryville, Virginia began its history in January 1868 in a little brick house on South Church Street. In the first meeting was, George D. Carter, Beverly Hargrove, Cornelia Anderson, Mary Jane Smith, Webb Young, Fannie Young, Thomas Washington, and Rev. George Carter. Shortly thereafter they moved to Main Street into an old sawmill building. Near the end of 1868 they again moved to Liberty Street in a building owned by the heirs of Mr. Moses Young, where they remained until the Fall of 1869.

Afterwhich, they moved to Buckmarsh Street into a building now owned by the heirs of Mr. Emanual Buchmarsh. By December 1869 the basement was completed at our current location so they were able to move here, having laid the cornerstone in May the same year.

By 1871 the church had been completed except for plastering, steps leading to the sanctuary, and pews. Berryville Baptist agreed to put up our steps and provide us with temporary seating. The church was fully completed in the Fall of 1872 and was dedicated in October the same year.

In 1911 the name was changed to St. Luke Baptist Church. One addition has been completed, the land east of the church between the church and Mrs. Pearl Williams property has been purchased and we plan soon to start the second addition.
