Foreword

Thank You Keeney

We need a book like this. Pastors, certainly, but also other Christ followers who seek to live a life of scriptural integrity and biblical ministry. You have written a simple but searing message to anyone who has a role of "rightly dividing the Word of truth" in a discipleship setting. Speakers will understand your struggles, teachers will immediately hear their own voice in your questions, and leaders will gain much needed insight through your examples. Pastors are not the only ones who preach; everyone who teaches a class or leads a study or guides a group has the responsibility to "be in season"... And, when in season, to hear the voice of the Lord clearly in order to obey immediately.

The lessons and truths you've compiled are ready to rescue those of us who are far down the path and in need of a serious tune-up but they will also be that ounce of prevention for those who are more recent to "working out our own salvation" on the path of service. And you help us recognize that preaching and prayer are interlinked (just like Acts 6:4 has always told us). How much more life transforming will our speaking, teaching, leading be when we commit ourselves to prayer and the ministry of the word?

Dear Reader

This is a book to read from beginning to end but as you do, please also be prepared to research (have you seen that bibliography?), to respond (you'll love The Matrix), and to reflect (My Waiting List just might help you regain hope in prayer and in the Lord). Most importantly, you'll be challenged to review, with the help of the Holy Spirit, your life and ministry... and if you dare to open them to a complete revision, be assured that days of refreshing and a renewal of ministry await you. But please do not begin until you have design a plan.

I hope these questions will help you mine everything you need from Pastor Keeney's latest book:

  • Are you a start-at-the-first-page kind of reader?
  • Or, do you skim and scan and parachute into the sections that immediately capture your attention or stir your passion?
  • Pen or highlighter?
  • Will your journal be your companion as you read, so that you may record as you go?
  • What if you kept a separate log to write your Spirit-inspired Action Steps so you can refer to it daily or weekly for the next 90 days?
  • Is there a mentor in your life or a colleague or spouse who could read this book at the same time so they can ask you questions or hold you accountable to your Action Steps?
  • Who are the persons both inside and outside of your ministry you can trust this journey to, asking them to pray for a transforming work of the Spirit as you read?

As the Apostle Paul exhorted Archippus, a fellow soldier in the Lord: pay attention, take heed, to complete the work you have received in and from the Lord. See to it that you do your best! (Colossians 4:17)  Pastor Keeney has given us what we need to accomplish that task. Running on empty is no longer an option.
