Bible Class News:

This Sunday our lesson in our adult Bible class is entitled "What is Thanksgiving?" It is based on these passages from Romans ... 1:8; 6:17; 7:25; 14:6, along with Psalms 100.

"FREEDOM’S WALK"
a study of the book of Romans continues this Sunday. Freedom's Walk is a discussion-orientated Adult Bible Class. To help prepare, may we suggest that your begin reading Romans in your personal daily Bible study.

Sermon for November 22, 2009

Sermon title: To all ye Pilgrims

Synopsis: Thursday, November 26, has been set aside by this nation as a time in which we give thanks. My question is … give thanks to whom? If you ask the media or secularized textbooks you will get several answers: give thanks to your friends and relatives, give thanks to people who have helped you in the past, give thanks to the government. And these are all good thoughts.  But is that why the national holiday of Thanksgiving was established? The answer is NO! many people in country do not realize that it is a day set aside to give thanks TO GOD! Here is the beginning of George Washington’s First Presidential Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in 1789. “Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits …”. This Sunday we are going to discuss the real reason behind our Thanksgiving holiday – as we give thanks to almighty God.

History

We meet in the historic Plainview Church building built in 1908. Originally, this was the home of the Plainview community's Baptist church. Several years ago, these good folks decided to sell their building to the members of the Plainview Church of Christ. Many of the descendants of the original founding families still live in the area. From my research their last names are Shurtleff, Howell, Vest and Kelly. (More history to come.)
