Prayer Requests for the week beginning May 8

Pray for the Bush family as they celebrate daughter Jenna’s wedding Sunday, May 10 at the Crawford, TX ranch. Pray for good weather, protection for the family and all invited guests and for the powerful presence of God throughout the weekend. Pray for great joy and blessing and for groom, Henry Hager and his bride to build a strong, biblical marriage. President Bush commissioned an altar with a large cross, both hewn of native Texas limestone, as a setting for the ceremony. Pray that this powerful symbol will be a positive reminder of the love of God to all who attend.

Pray for President and Mrs. Bush as they travel to Israel, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, May 13-18, asking God to protect and guide them throughout the trip. While in Israel, the President will meet with President Peres and Prime Minister Olmert and address the Knesset. He will then travel to Saudi Arabia to meet with King Abdullah and Egypt to meet President Mubarak. He will also hold meetings in Egypt with King Abdullah II of Jordan and Palestinian Authority President Abbas, and deliver remarks at the World Economic Forum on the Middle East. Pray for God’s intervention and blessing in each of these encounters, asking God to work through all that is done. Pray also for the people of the nation of Israel as they celebrate the 60th anniversary of their founding as a state.

Pray for people in the nation of Burma (Myanmar) as it continues to reel from a powerful cyclone and ensuing tidal wave last weekend. The death toll may rise as high as 100,000 with over one million homeless. The military junta which rules the nation is reluctant to accept help from the outside, so pray for people to have the fresh water, clothing and malaria-preventing supplies including mosquito netting. Pray for protection from waterborne disease, dysentery and more. As the international community seeks to provide help, pray that the military junta running the nation will open the doors and accept the support and relief of the nations of the world. Pray for the many missionaries and non-government organization workers who are in country and are impacted by this disaster as well. Pray for the Spirit of God to clearly move and be acknowledged in this nation.

Pray for strengthening of the U.S. economy, as many citizens are deeply impacted by the current downturn. Pray for conditions—particularly gasoline prices—to improve and for God’s provision for those hardest hit.

As the nation pauses to celebrate Mother’s Day, give thanks and praise to God for the influence of godly mothers in our country. Pray for mothers who struggle physically, materially or spiritually, asking God to bring into their lives exactly what they need to be healed, provided for, encouraged and blessed by God. Pray for young mothers to influence their children to love and honor God, and pray that all mothers will rely on the Scriptures to guide them today and always, regardless of their stage in life.

A huge drug ring was discovered and broken up on the campus of San Diego State University this week. Pray for all college students in our nation to resist the lure of drugs and seek relationship with God and His people. Pray for success for all those who fight the war against illegal drug use, asking God to bless and help them in their efforts.

Give thanks for the great contribution of our nation’s brave military personnel, asking God to cover each one with His mighty protection and care. As recent reports have revealed a high rate of suicide among our military, pray for this trend to turn around and for hope to be kindled in the hearts of those feeling desperate. Pray for services to be provided for those in need and pray for comfort and strength for the loved ones of those who have taken their lives.

INSPIRATIONAL REFERENCES FOR THE WEEK

Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
—The Bible, Deuteronomy 5:16 (NIV)

He went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying. Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer the door. When she recognized Peter's voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, "Peter is at the door! You're out of your mind," they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, "It must be his angel." But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. "Tell James and the brothers about this," he said, and then he left for another place.
—The Bible, Acts 12:12-17 (NIV)
