FOR FREEDOM'S SAKE

In my mind's eye I see row after row,

Of crosses and Stars of David below,

Covering the peaceful rolling countryside.

Each man's purpose was the same.

It was for the sake of freedom they came,

And for freedom every one of them died.

Dear God, they were so very young,

And "their song was not yet sung."

Their lives ended much too fast.

But, though they are dead and gone,

Their memory lingers on,

Over the fifty long years that have passed!

'Twas for the Red, White, and Blue,

And a people they never knew,

That they laid their lives on the line.

Ah, but it wasn't just for them, you know,

That the red blood did flow.

It was for everyone's freedom including yours and mine!

So let us lift the banners high!

Their memory shall never die!

Long may the ship of freedom sail!

And wherever "Old Glory" flies,

Brave men will still rise,

That freedom may long prevail!

======================================================================================== MYSTERY POEMS

JUST CALL ME "BILLY JOE!"

Most folks in the little town of Hope,
Knew about the widespread use of dope.
They even knew the drug kingpin's name.
"Billy Joe" was a hometown boy,
Who had in his employ,
Anybody who would play his evil game.
Things seemed to be going well,
As far as Billy Joe could tell,
Until that fateful day,
When a young man in a suit of brown,
Drove slowly into town,
From a city several hundred miles away!
His first stop was the "Five and Ten,"
Where he ambled in,
Saying, "Isn't it a beautiful day?"
"You sure have a nice store,"
"I have never been to your town before."
"Could you recommend a place to stay?"
What the young man didn't know,
Was he had addressed Billy Joe,
Who was talking to the manager, "Bubba" Flynn!
Billy Joe had known "Bubba" since he was a boy.
And he was unofficially in Billy Joe's employ,
As well as being manager of the Five and Ten!
"I can help you out," said Billy Joe!
"There's a widow I know,"
"Who runs a motel down the street."
"It's in the center of town,"
"Close to everything aroun',"
"And the prices just can't be beat!"
"But, since it's afternoon,"
"You'd better go soon,"
"If you want a room for tonight!"
"If you're goin' there now,"
"I can tell you how."
"You just make two lefts and then a right!"
After the young man had gone, Billy Joe said,
While thoughtfully scratching his head,
"What do you make of it Mr. Flynn?"
"Did you notice the gleam in his eye?"
"Do you think he's FB.I.,"
"Or perhaps a member of the Mafia again?"
Bubba said, "I don't know what it's all about,"
"He may be here to check us out,"
"But we need have no fear,"
"For better men have tried,"
"And foolishly died."
"It's time to close." "Let's get out of here!"
Meanwhile, the young man found the motel,
Stepped up and rang the front desk bell,
Then carefully looked at everything in view!
The elderly lady who came through the door,
Reminded him of someone he had met before,
As she said, "Yes Sir, may I help you?"
The young man said, "I need a room for the night."
"I heard the price was right,"
"From a customer at the Five and Ten!"
Mrs. Gray tried to be nice,
As she quoted him the price,
Yet, she wondered who the customer had been.
As the young man took the key,
He smiled pleasantly,
Saying, "Thank you very much!"
Mrs. Gray wondered if he was married.
She noticed that the only thing he carried,
Was a valise he held tight in his clutch!
Though the telephone was ringing,
Mrs. Gray kept clinging,
To the picture of the young man in her mind!
She knew without a doubt,
Her son, Billy Joe would check things out,
But she wondered just what he would find.
The next mornin' around ten,
Folks were checkin' out and in,
Much like they had always done.
But, this mornin' seemed odd in a way,
For at this time of day,
She was always paid a visit by her son.
Each minute seemed to grow longer,
And her curiosity grew stronger,
So she decided to give Billy Joe a call.
But she figured he was gone,
For the answering machine came on,
Saying, "Thanks for callin' y'all!"
"I'll be back any time,"
"So leave your message at the chime,"
"And I'll do my best to return your call!"
Mom Gray's mind quickly shifted to Room ten,
The room she had put the young man in,
As she wondered how well he had spent the night.
When she had checked last night around nine,
Everything was fine,
And at eleven there was no light!
Mom Gray walked slowly down to Room ten,
And she reluctantly used her key to get in,
For she couldn't rouse the young man to open the door!
You see, she had this feeling so strong,
That something dreadful was wrong.
She had seldom felt this way before!
Then, she began to stare,
For the young man was not there!
The bed hadn't even been slept in!
But, there was no hint of foul play,
Or even a hint that yesterday,
Anybody had occupied Room ten!
She decided to take another look
At the motel's sign in book,
To see the name he'd written down.
To Mom Gray's surprise,
Right before her eyes,
Was the name "Reverend Timothy Brown! "
Some time later she learned that during the night,
Before mornin' light,
Her son, Billy Joe had disappeared from town!
The townsfolk say,
That even yet today,
Nobody has seen "hide nor hair'" of the men!
But, they say that before the next nightfall,
The F.B.I. made a call,
On "Bubba" the manager of the Five and Ten!

I COULD NEVER TELL

If I had the wisdom of Solomon,

And the speaking ability of Paul,

And could live as long as Methuselah,

I could never tell it all!

I could never tell how Jesus saved me,

Or even the reason why,

For a poor lost sinner like me,

The Son of God would die.

If I had the voice of a prophet,

Or an orator's golden tongue,

Or had an enormous repertoire,

Of songs that could be sung,

I could only make a feeble attempt,

To possibly describe,

God's daily tender mercies,

To each nation, kindred, and tribe!

Mere words would not be sufficient,

The blessed story to tell,

How a wonderful loving God,

Can save one's soul from Hell.

How could I describe,

The never ending, never fading love,

Of a God who watches o'er us,

Constantly from above?

How could I adequately tell,

Of His greatness or His amazing grace,

Or how His blood cleanses from sin,

Without leaving one trace?

I could never depict the agony,

Jesus felt hanging upon the tree,

Or how His precious blood,

Could set this sinner free!

Although I could speak in many languages,

And understand them well,

And had a thousand tongues with which to speak,

I could never tell!

======================================================= ================================================================================== HOW DEEP IS THIS VALLEY

How deep is this valley, Lord?

Why is it so long?

How did I come to lose my joyous song?

I guess I must have gotten my eyes off you,

Honestly, Lord I didn't mean to.

With darkness all around me,

I find it hard to see.

But, my heart knows for sure,

You would never leave me.

There has never been a valley too low,

Or a mountain too high,

That we couldn't walk together,

Just You and I!

It seem like only yesterday,

The clouds were white in a sky of blue.

Ah, Your presence was so near,

I could easily touch You!

But, today I shiver in darkness,

Needing a place to hide.

Could my being here,

Be due to my foolish pride?

Lord, have I let other affections,

Gradually creep in?

Did my lack of dedication to You,

Become sin?

Oh how I long for the fellowship,

We once had.

I need you here beside me so bad.

I despise this empty feeling,

Inside of me.

In the shelter of Your arms,
Is where I long to be.

Lord, please take Your loving hand,

And lift me up.

With everlasting joy,

Fill my empty cup.

Then, once more I'll be able,

To sing Thy praise.

And I'll gladly be Your servant,

Throughout my days!

Ah, yes it seems I hear,

You calling me,

To deeper depths,

And even higher heights with Thee!

I can hear Your tender voice,

Say, "Come my Son!"

"Get back on your feet."

"Your race is nearly run!"

Then, I feel the touch,

Of Your mighty hand,

I joyfully stand!

WE'RE THE DOTSONS!

Just call us "Bob" and "Linda Lou,"

If that’s agreeable with you.

No Mr. or Mrs. is needed for my wife, And me!

There’s no reason to "make a fuss!"

There’s nothing fancy about us.

We’re just as plain as plain can be.

We grew up eating fried taters, soup beans,

Pork, chicken, and wild greens!

Our milk came straight from the family cow!

Through the years we’ve never tried,

To act dignified.

And it’s a little to late to start now!

Yes, we’ve had some trials along the way,

Times when we had to kneel and pray,

"Father, help us to stand the test."

The storm clouds had gathered all around.

But, in God’s shelter we happily found,

A place of perfect peace and rest!

We’re now approaching our "Autumn years,"

It’s a time when nearly everybody fears,

That life will be a burden too hard to bear.

But, together we’ll make a stand,

Walking hand in hand,

Knowing we serve a God Who's always there!

JUST MY DARLING AND ME

I have no desire to roam.

Just a quiet evening at home,

Has become "my cup of tea!"

Although it isn't exactly planned,

We'll each take a book in hand,

My darling and me.

Gone forever are the familiar noises,

Of jubilant children's voices.

"Father Time" has made a change,

In the family scene.

As each evening goes by,

It's just Linda Lou and I!

You "empty nesters,"

Know exactly what I mean.

Almost fifty years have passed.

But, God made our love to last,

For all eternity!

This I surely know.

Fate would have it so.

This is how it was meant to be!

Our future looks bright.

So, we must have done something right.

Each day is a great day to be living!

Ah Friend, if folks are wise,

Marriage becomes a compromise,

Consisting of taking and giving!

MY LIFE'S PUZZLE

I gazed at the pieces of my life's puzzle,

With utter dismay on my face,

As I wondered if God would show mercy,

And put them all back in place.

I had tried on my own,

To ease the undending pain.

Even when friends tried to console me,

Their efforts were all in vain.

I needed a miracle in my life,

Of this I was quite sure.

Yes, vain was the help of others.

They could offer me no cure.

Ah, but then I heard Jesus say,

"Come unto Me and be made whole!"

"All doubt and fear will disappear,"

"From your troubled soul!"

And so I came on bended knee,

In answer to His call!

Then, Jesus heard my earnest plea,

As I gave to Him my all!

Now even though strong winds may blow,

And clouds may turn to gray,

This my friend I surely know,

He'll go with me all the way!

I ONLY HAVE ONE CHANCE

Only once shall I pass this way.

So, the deeds I do and the words I say,

Must be seasoned with God's unconditional love!

I'm not my own, you see.

A dying Saviour purchased me,

As he hung between earth and Heaven above!

Do you wonder why I love Him so?

Well friend, you have a right to know.

It's because He loved me when I was yet in my sin!

Though I had cursed His holy name,

To my heart's door He came,

And when He knocked I let Him in!

Now I walk the narrow way,

Protected both night and day,

And guarded by His watchful eye!

Ah yes, I may have many trials,

And I often "must go the extra miles,"

But, God gives a peace,

That money just can't buy!

THERE IS JOY IN KNOWING JESUS

Some folks spend a life time,

Seeking happiness it seems.

But, they find that elusive Utopia,

Only in their dreams.

Well, friend I've found the answer,

For every woman, man, girl, and boy.

Jesus is the solution,

And the source of our real joy!

You see, happiness often depends,

Upon one's state of mind.

We search for endless hours.

Yet, it's impossible to find.

But, there's real joy in knowing Jesus,

As we travel along life's way!

He has promised to never leave us,

And to guide us every day!

When dark clouds hover overhead,

And the sun refuses to shine,

Jesus gives us the calm assurance,

That everything will be just fine!

He's the beautiful Rose of Sharon,

Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End,

Our closest Companion,

And our dear and precious Friend!

A HIDING PLACE

Some folks search for worldly fame.

Their wanderings never cease.

They have tried it all.

But, the can't recall,

One moment of inner peace.

But, I've found a place of quiet rest,

Far from toil and strife,

Where no angry billows ever crest,

Upon the sea of life!

In the cleft of the Rock,

Is my hiding place.

There I have no cause for fear.

Sorrows are gone without a trace,

As God wipes away each tear!

Ah, when life's storms are raging high,

And the ground is shaking 'neath my feet,

I can feel my Saviour drawing nigh!

His presence is so sweet!

A TRUE AND FAITHFUL FRIEND

My heart is pounding like a drum!

My lips are filled with humble praise!

When I think of where God brought me from,

I vow to serve Him all my days!

My troubled past I've left behind.

It's bridges I have gladly burned.

Now I find such peace of mind,

Since to the Saviour I have turned!

Christ guides my footsteps every day.

He knows the way that I must take.

Along the Straight and Narrow Way,

No right or left turns can I make.

The road of life is often dim,

So much these natural eyes can't see.

But, then He lets me lean on Him.

Sometimes He even carries me!

I've found a true and faithful Friend,

Who will never turn His back on me!

And if I'll hold out to the end,

I know His blessed face I'll see!
