The Cumberland Christian School was founded by Bro. Chester Rhoad, former pastor of the Cumberland Wesleyan Church, and his late wife, Mabel. During the early years of his 42 year pastorate, the Rhoads felt the need for Christian education in this area.
In 1976, the school was founded, first meeting in the Sunday School wing of the Cumberland Wesleyan Church. Pastor Rhoad served as Administrator, Mabel Rhoad as principal, and their daughter, the late Betty Hersman, as supervisor. Classes were held in the church for two years until the gymnasium was built with an attached mobile home which housed the school's Upper Learning Center. As the school began to grow, Pastor Rhoad, along with the help of the church people and students, built new learning centers and lunchroom which are in use today.
The school has taught grades K-12 since its beginning in 1976. Throughout the years, Cumberland Christian School has served many families from the Fentress County area, as well as many of the surrounding counties. It has produced high caliber students that went on to become pastors, lawyers, doctors, nurses, accountants, school teachers, law enforcement officers, and many other worthy callings.
We are thankful for the school and the vision that began many years ago in the hearts of the Rhoad family, and we praise God for His continued faithfulness throughout the many years. We are looking forward to the future and are excited to see what God has in store.
We ask that as you pray, please remember our students and staff, and we invite you to come visit us. May God bless you.
